Way back in 1973, the Australian National Gallery paid $1.3 million AUD (Australian dollars) for Jackson Pollock's "Blue Poles".

In today's money that's about $13.6 million AUD.

Reminds me of that graffiti artist from NY who sold one of his works through Soothby's or whatever the big auction house is called. As soon as a winner was selected, the work went through a shredder...and it instantly shot up in value because of that.

Lol, I paint and I never thought of doing that!

Seems I get much bigger income if I did do that but i.wouldn't have the brass cheek to sell a blank canvas for that amount!

It's stuff like this that makes art seem pretentious and not for the common man. I have a lifelong friend whose mother is a professional artist (painting), so I know from her how difficult it can be to make money in the art world (and she's really celebrated, locally, so it's not like she doesn't have plenty of commissions and awards and such), the difference being that she...y'know...paints stuff. Cos she's an artist. Not a con artist, unlike the Danish person who bilked Australia out of all those sweet, sweet koala doubloons or whatever the slang is for Australian dollars.

Visual art (The Quote, Art World) has long be in the dumps 100+years.

Last 100+ years where real artistic talent was, was in the illustration world.

One thing for sure:
it could truly be said that the artist left a lot to the viewer's imagination.
