BBC: Earliest definitive evidence of people in Americas

Humans reached the Americas at least 7,000 years earlier than previously thought, according to new findings.

Now, a team working in New Mexico has found scores of human footprints dated to between 23,000 and 21,000 years old. The discovery could transform views about when the continent was settled. It suggests there could have been great migrations that we know nothing about. And it raises the possibility that these earlier populations could have gone extinct.

The footprints were formed in soft mud on the margins of a shallow lake which now forms part of Alkali Flat in White Sands.

A team from the US Geological Survey carried out radiocarbon dating on seeds found in sediment layers above and below where the footprints were found. This gave the researchers remarkably precise dates for the impressions themselves.

Since I live in New Mexico this is particularly interesting! Thanks for posting it. 8^)

From the article: "They offer a fascinating window into what life was like for these early occupants of what is now the South West US.

"The scientists don't know for sure what the teenagers were doing, but it is possible they were helping the adults with a type of hunting custom seen in later Native American cultures. This was known as the buffalo jump and involved driving animals over a shallow cliff edge.

"The animals "all had to be processed in a short period of time," explained Dr Sally Reynolds, co-author from Bournemouth University. "You'd have to start fires, you'd have to start rendering the fat." The teenagers could have been helping out by collecting firewood, water or other essentials."

Very cool to know of this, thank you for sharing. God bless.

They were probably searching for Hatch chile, but it hasn't evolved yet.

Don't be so sure! I'm certain that Hatch chile has been around since the days when fire was first discovered. BTW, ristras are beginning to be sold at the roadsides!!

I think the evidence will reveal that the two teenagers met in one part of the forest called "Tinder" based on one hand print found, that swiped right.

Ain't no forest in White Sands National Monument (which is why it's called White Sands). Maybe they decided to go to the beach together.

This doesn't seem like new information:

"The settlement of the Americas is widely accepted to have begun when Paleolithic hunter-gatherers entered North America from the North Asian Mammoth steppe via the Beringia land bridge, which had formed between northeastern Siberia and western Alaska due to the lowering of sea level during the Last Glacial Maximum (26,000 to 19,000 years ago).[1]"

I think the keywords in the headline are "definitive evidence". Existing evidence for early settlement is disputed - typically stone tools which are arguably of natural origin. The lack of clear evidence is discussed in the Wiki article you provided.

Note that the quote you supplied says that the Beringia land bridge formed 26,000 to 19,000 years ago. It may not have actually been used as a corridor into North America until several thousand years after its formation.

Having said all this, the seed dating appears to be a strong piece of evidence favouring early settlement.

The Bible time line does not agree with the secular view of mankind. Creation although not believed by some in the christian community is what the Bible teaches, therefor the teachings of man are counterfeit if they are different from what the Bible teaches.

Exodus 20:11
For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

Man was created on the sixth day

Genesis 2:3-5 King James Version

3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

4 These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens,

5 And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the Lord God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground.

I guess it comes down to what you believe in, the Word of God or the word of man.

Based on real world observation the Bible is incorrect with regard to this topic.

It is your opinion and I respect your right to express it.

Can you support you opinion from the Bible or do you rely on science?

Acceptance of evolution is not a 'religious' preference. There are many Christians and Christian denominations which are comfortable with Evolution.

Evolution is not an atheist concept. It is quite possible to be an atheist and not accept Evolution.

Evolution is a scientific concept. Science does not have a religious preference.

Word of God v word of man?

There are 30000 plus sects with different ideas of
what God's word actually says / means, so I don't
think it is as simple as that, or that anyone KNOWS
he has the one True reading.

What do you think?
