What do i do with that? Romans 1:3 states decendent of david through the flesh but the geneologies go to joseph. Obviously im looking at it wrong and am missing something....if there was a thread in this before, i will say, i tried using the search bar and am clearly inept at doing so, lol. Need a tutorial or something.

Descendant doesn't have to me immediate. You descend from your great-great-great-great-grandfather even though he is not the same person as your immediate father. St. Joseph was a descendant of David and was the legal father of Jesus. Mary was also a descendant of David and was the biological mother of Jesus. Therefore in both cases Jesus is a descendant of David.

Romans 1:3, "concerning his Son who was a descendant of David with reference to the flesh"

Matthew 1:1, "This is the record of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

No conflict...

Hello @Br4nd0n, this may help.

Matthew 1
16 Jacob was the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, by whom Jesus was born, who is called the Messiah.

Luke 3
23 When He began His ministry, Jesus Himself was about thirty years of age, being, as was supposed, the son of Joseph, the son of Eli (or Heli).

Joseph is the natural son of Jacob.

Joseph is also the "son" of Eli (or Heli) because of his marriage to Mary.

This tells us that the Davidic bloodline in Luke is Mary's lineage, not Joseph's. This is how genealogies were written in 1st Century Israel (IOW, women were rarely included). Interestingly however, Tamar, the daughter-in-law of Judah, Rahab, the Harlot, and Ruth, the Moabite, are included as part of the bloodline that runs from Abraham, to David, to Joseph, to Jesus in Matthew 1.

God bless you!

It is also interesting to note that not only is the Lord Jesus King David's "Son" (by both blood and by marriage), as God/David's "Creator" .. e.g. John 1:1-3, He is also King David's "Father".

Revelation 22
16 “I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things in the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, the Bright and Morning Star.”
--David

Matthew 22
41 While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question:
42 “What do you think about the Christ, whose son is He?” They said to Him, “The son of David.”
43 He said to them, “Then how does David in the Spirit call Him ‘Lord,’ saying,
44 ‘THE LORD SAID TO MY LORD,
“SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND,
UNTIL I PUT YOUR ENEMIES BENEATH YOUR FEET” ’?
45 “If David then calls Him ‘Lord,’ how is He his son?

Mary is a descendant of David through Nathan, not Solomon.
Joseph is a descendant of David through Solomon, the kingly line.
Joseph is the legal father of Jesus, making Jesus legally from the kingly line.
Jesus is naturally (by nature/birth) the Son of the Divine Omnipotentate.

Matthew, Luke, Mary, Joseph & Jesus genealogies

Joseph was descended from David from Solomon. While Mary was a descendant of Solomon’s older brother Nathan.

Mary had to find a husband from the tribe of Judah like herself to protect her father’s estate. (See Numbers 36:6-9)

She also needed a direct descendant of Solomon to perfect her son’s claim to the throne of David, since Nathan’s descendants weren’t of the Royal line.

Joseph fit the bill on both accounts but like every other descendant of Solomon’s carried a blood curse disqualifying any biological son of his from ever being King of Israel. (Jeremiah 22:28-30)

Since Joseph was not the Lord’s biological father, he could adopt Him, qualifying Him to be King without passing Him the curse.

Jesus via adoption becomes the only One in Israel qualified to sit on David’s throne, and remains so to this day.

There are two recorded lineages of Jesus. One from Mary & another from Joseph. Thus, Jesus became Joseph’s actual son via ADOPTION. Old testament adoption gives the child complete equaility & all the benefits of a natural born child.

Simpler explanation:

Jesus differing genealogies are a result of Matthew's account being Mary's line, and Luke's being Joseph's line

Matthew is about Messiah as King. Luke is about Messiah as the son of man.
