Beloved ones, let me share what I perceive what our Lord said:
““But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut up the kingdom of heaven against men; for you neither go in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in.”
Matthew 23:13 NKJV
Beloved ones, let us come to the beginning before He said this in Matthew 23:13 to Matthew 23:1-12; This is what we have heard:
“Then Jesus spoke to the multitudes and to His disciples, saying: “The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat.
Therefore whatever they tell you to observe, that observe and do, but do not do according to their works; for they say, and do not do.
For they bind heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.
But all their works they do to be seen by men. They make their phylacteries broad and enlarge the borders of their garments. They love the best places at feasts, the best seats in the synagogues,
greetings in the marketplaces, and to be called by men, ‘Rabbi, Rabbi.’”
Matthew 23:1-7 NKJV
So Jesus said to the multitude and disciples, that they may learn from what He said about the scribes and Pharisees.
Jesus told the scribes and the Pharisees sitting in Moses’ seat. They sat as ones who teach the law of Moses. The scribes and Pharisees told the people to observe the teachings of the law that observe and do the teachings of the law but Jesus did not let the people do according to their works.
For the Lord Jesus Christ further said:
“But you, do not be called ‘Rabbi’; for One is your Teacher, the Christ, and you are all brethren.
Do not call anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father, He who is in heaven.
And do not be called teachers; for One is your Teacher, the Christ.”
Matthew 23:8-10 NKJV
Beloved ones, it is clear that we can’t consider the scribes and the Pharisees as our Teacher and that we are all brethren — according to what we heard our Lord said.
Beloved ones, it is clear that our Lord taught us not to call anyone on earth father. So it is evident that there are scribes and Pharisees who regarded themselves as fathers and except others expect to call them fathers of the law.
And for the second time, our Lord said that we are not to regard ourselves as teachers but we are to regard ourselves as brethren, for Christ is our Teacher, and not the scribes and the Pharisees.
Our Lord then said:
“But he who is greatest among you shall be your servant.
And whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”
Matthew 23:11-12 NKJV
So our Lord taught that among brethren, he who is greatest shall be servant of the brethren. And Jesus taught that among brethren who exalt himself will be humbled and that among brethren who humble himself will be exalted. So our Lord considered that the scribes and the Pharisees who have not acted according to His teachings, for they did not serve as servants of God. And the scribes and the Pharisees who exalted themselves will be humbled.
Then our Lord said :
““But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut up the kingdom of heaven against men; for you neither go in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in.”
Matthew 23:13 NKJV
So our Lord Jesus considered the scribes and Pharisees as ones who were cursed, for He said to them, “woe to you, scribes and Pharisees,” and labeled them as hypocrites.
For our Lord taught us that the scribes and Pharisees shut up the kingdom of heaven against men. So the scribes and Pharisees shut up the kingdom of Heaven by their teachings — for our Lord considered their teachings as work of the flesh. For the scribes and Pharisees neither go in themselves into the kingdom of Heaven, nor do they allow those who are entering to go in by their teachings.
Remember what our Lord said two times:
“But you, do not be called ‘Rabbi’; for One is your Teacher, the Christ, and you are all brethren.
Do not call anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father, He who is in heaven.
And do not be called teachers; for One is your Teacher, the Christ.”
Matthew 23:8-10 NKJV
Beloved ones, we are also told not to consider the scribes and the Pharisees as fathers who taught us the law but only to regard One who is our Teacher, the Christ.
So beloved ones, what open the kingdom of Heaven for man is the teachings of Christ.
May God’s peace be with you.
To God be thanksgiving through Christ.
Amen.
