On Writing by Stephen King. This book changed my life. It covers all areas of fiction writing with a very no-nonsense and right-to-the-heart-of-the-matter approach, presenting each topic (grammar, plot, character, etc) with examples that are easy to relate to and often humorous. He frequently references other authors, including those who have written books about writing that *he* enjoyed, so from his book we also get a list of books dealing with the same topic as his book.

Also included are snippets of life experiences that shaped him as a writer, examples from his own writing that help aspiring writers to understand his approach to this art form, and some reimagined examples of what he had found to be acceptable or poor quality writing back when he was still an English teacher (before ‘Carrie’ was published; exciting backstory behind that is included! ).

With this book you get a little bit of everything related to how one can improve one’s writing; I do recall from my last reading that he refers us to a couple of other books for a more lengthy study of, say, grammar; he doesn’t dwell on the subject of character development as much as some others do but he has read the most helpful books on the subject himself and very kindly points us to them while telling us a bit about what we can expect from each of those other writers’ books.

I especially love his analogy of ‘The Toolkit’ that every writer has, whether they are aware of it or not. He helps us understand what the audience wants to read but also helps us to keep in mind the treatment of readers with respect (a perspective that I have not read in any other such material, and a sobering lesson that I took very much to heart).

I’m obviously a huge fan of this book; in my opinion it’s the best book ‘on writing’ of fiction overall. I actually, amusingly enough, ended up being gifted (over time, lol) two copies of this book so it certainly feels meaningful on many levels for me!

Is there a particular area of writing that you’re more concerned with, though? I can easily pull out one of his recs for you; it wouldn’t be any trouble.
