A very common misunderstanding is that your body is a shell and only your spirit will live on forever.

It can be tempting to view our body as only a vehicle for our soul, something that is a “necessary evil.” This false belief can be found throughout history and is still prevalent today.

Unfortunately, it can have a negative impact on the way we live our lives and is a philosophy that runs directly counter to the Catholic Church’s teachings.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church clearly states that both body and soul have great dignity and are meant to be united.

It's amazing how the most ancient heresies are still alive today, like this (Gnosticism). Think about all the ways even that modern media feeds that basic idea that our body is flawed and must be gotten rid of or is not inextricably linked to our soul.

Movies like Freaky Friday make kids think that our soul/identity/consciousness can simply be swapped with another, science fiction shows like my beloved Stargate SG-1 describe the ultimate pursuit in life is to achieve "ascension" where the body converts to pure energy and lives on a higher plane of existence.

When you really take a look at it, there's a barrage of Gnostic propaganda in the media, not just pertaining to this vilification of the material, but also feeding ideas like esoteric knowledge.

That's just one heresy. Entertainment and informational media steadily feed us a diet of just about all the heresies the Church has ever condemned, if you know what to watch out for.

Awaiting the New Body

1For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. 2Meanwhile we groan, longing to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling, 3because when we are clothed, we will not be found naked. 4For while we are in this tent, we groan and are burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. 5Now the one who has fashioned us for this very purpose is God, who has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.
