We have a system where our age starts the day we are born. A formal birth certificate is drawn up and that is technically, in societies eyes the start of our life. We even go through life referring back to our birth-day to determine our age but is this correct?

If Christians believe that life starts at the moment of conception, shouldn't our life and age start in the womb and not our birth-day? If we are alive in the womb, surely that's when our time has started.

Just a thought.

We have no idea what day we were conceived. Although I can tell you that my oldest was a Christmas present (born Sept 23) and my daughter is an anniversary present (born March 26) :p

I agree..... we should all say we are, our current age, plus 6-9 months old.

But Im sure that the addition of 9 months would not make much of a difference.

If one where to stay in the womb for a year.....that would be a different story.

Lord knows I don't want to be any older than I already am ^_^

Dude, you’re younger than me! Cheer up! And you’re hip and mellow, not old. There’s a difference.

"While for most people around the world, age at birth is calculated at zero, for the Chinese, being born means automatically turning one."

I believe the point of the thread is to question when Life begins. There are people who hate, and call murders, them that are Pro-choice, but when asked how long they, themselves, have been alive....they dont count the months they were in the womb.

This is an interesting fact to ponder.

so the Chinese have it correct, then?

"Chinese starts counting age from the time of pregnancy, unlike the western system where age is calculated from the time of birth. Since the period of pregnancy can vary, the age of the child is considered to be one year at the time of birth."

I think it is a little bit of a stretch to say that you are 1 at birth..... but sometimes i forget my own age and think that "give or take a year" is acceptable.

But then again...this could open up other cans of worms....like age of consent. Do we expunge the records of those convicted of raping one who, if fetus time is counted or we switched to Chinese time, would have been considered old enough to consent?

I think more thought needs to be put into it....as oppose to just adding a year to everyone's age to fit the pro-life agenda.

What do you think about Genesis? Was Adam alive before breathing the breathe of life? And when does man become a living soul? When a sperm enters an egg? when a heart best is detected? Or when they breathe the breath of life?

I see their point but disagree.

why do you disagree when you posted this in your OP:

"shouldn't our life and age start in the womb and not our birth-day?"

that's what the Chinese do, yet you disagree?

Interestingly, for a time, some non-Byzantine Orthodox lands had the ecclesiastical new year as the Annunciation on March 25, rather than the Byzantine civil new year which is September 1.

In principle they agree, because the Chinese acknowledge life begins at conception and not birth.

The reason I disagree is the generic system of declaring all people one calendar years old at birth is going to be inaccurate the vast majority of the time, as pregnancies generally do not last that long so they are miscalculating peoples age. A person's precise age, starting from conception would be difficult to determine the exact age. And I suspect that's why the Chinese have resorted to a standard age and not personalised system.
