If a business seeking legitimacy is going to sell a product, avoiding negative historical connotations makes it more palatable for those who are still politically against its sale.
It's unfortunate that hemp was included in the US.

The link has stats on Covid incidence and deaths in Jamaica, land of the Rastas. Seems to me that the curves look about the same as in other counties. Which suggests to me that THC does not inhibit SARS-CoV-2 from attacking lung cells.

Jamaica COVID-19 stats - Realtime coronavirus statistics with charts

But no problem, mon. Go ahead and smoke your ganja.

Without figures for the percentage of the population that are regular weed smokers, that tells us little. What's needed is a comparison of smokers and non-smokers, adjusted for age, morbidities, etc.

Researchers in the United States have conducted a study showing that a cannabis plant compound inhibited infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in human lung cells...

Marsha Rosner from the University of Chicago in Illinois and colleagues found that cannabidiol (CBD) and its metabolite 7-OH-CBD potently blocked SARS-CoV-2 replication in lung epithelial cells...

Interesting. The anti-viral effect was only seen with cannabidiol and the 7-hydroxy-CBD metabolite. Other cannabinoids, like THC, lacked this property. It remains to be seen if CBD can actually treat patients who are already infected with SARS-CoV-2, and are symptomatic.

So maybe I should start taking CBD? Cause I don't want to smoke. I am a cyclist and not interested in putting smoke in my lungs.

The study was just in vitro. AFAIK, there’s no data suggesting that CBD inhibits SARS-CoV-2 from infecting lung cells in vivo. The best evidenced-based way to avoid Covid is to get vaccinated. (And I see no harm in masking and taking other common sense precautions in crowded situations.)

OH I see, thank you.

These days, smoking isn't necessary, you can get an efficient aerosol inhalation by vaping to avoid tarry and carcinogenic combustion products. But as jayem said, there's no evidence yet that it would be efficacious.

There are also edibles. Blood flows throughout all parts of the lungs. Up until this year there was a lot of hemp being grown in our area for CBD but it went bust because so many grew it that they flooded the market. There are saw 7 or 8 fields of it within a few miles of my house. Stinks to high heavens.

If cannabinoids have anti-viral activity, it's best to maximise concentrations in the epithelial and alveolar cells that are first encountered by the virus, to minimise the chances of viral replication. Inhalation of aerosol preparations is the quickest and easiest way of doing that.

Yes, it does have quite a pong!
