How do you tell the difference between the voice of God and Satan?

Specifically how would know if it's Satan mimicking God's voice? I mean think about it, Satan is this unfathomably ancient being that God calls the, "wisest of the beasts of the fields" or something to that effect in Genesis. He used to be in the throne room of God; he's talked to God more than any of us and knows what he sounds like. Some people use that famous meme of God's voice calming us, leading us, encouraging us, reassuring us, and the like while the devil's voice obsesses us, condemns us, worries us, causing fear and the like but to me, that's just saying that the devil is a moron and severely underrating his intelligence. If I were the devil I wouldn't use such negative emotions as my only arsenal of deceiving the faithful. I'd use honey and not vinegar. I would calm someone when they shouldn't be calm, I would lead people in the wrong direction, I would encourage someone to believe a falsehood, I would reassure him of that falsehood, I would promise him the sun, the moon, and the stars and make like those promises come from the creator himself and when everything falls through and the promises do not come forth the man would be crushed and he would doubt he ever heard from God in the first place.

This is what I am afraid might be happening to me. I have been promised (metaphorically) the sun, moon, and stars and if the promise fails it puts doubt on if I've ever heard God in the first place. The promises are not important; keeping my assurance in my relationship with God is what's most important here. If I'm not hearing from God, I am truly lost in life.

God speaks through the written Word but if you believe you hear God's spoken Word then it must be tested through the written Word. If it does not agree with the scriptures it is not from God and if it agree to the test of scripture it may be from God. *Matthew 4:4. What your missing here or you may not be aware of is that God promises to guide us and lead us if we seek him so that we might find him through His written Word *Jeremiah 29:13; John 14:26; John 16:13; John 7:17; John 8:31-32; 1 John 2:27.

Jesus advises us to test the spirits.

Let me give you a practical example, one that fits exactly what you mention. So, I get this faint thought, that goes "I am the Alpha and the Omega!" So, calmly I respond "Please declare that Jesus Christ is the Lord?" So, it responds "J.....J......J......" And I respond, "Be gone, evil spirit, in Jesus name!". So this is also how to make sure something comes from the Holy Spirit. I'm tuned in to His "voice" quite well, so that's why this encounter puzzled me, and I had to make sure. Anyhow, if I want to make sure, the Spirit senses this straight away, and He would then give me something like "Yes, my child, Jesus Christ is the Lord. Only an evil spirit would argue." See, the Holy Spirit doesn't mind at all to give one confirmation this same way. You won't offend Him by humbly asking. I say this with confidence, and would be prepared to stand before the Almighty to take full responsibility for this statement.

  2. Read your (whole) Bible.
    (It doesn't have to be all at once.)
  3. Go to an effective church.
    (Some churches are more autism-friendly than others.)
  4. Get the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.
  5. Listen to music that is infused with the Word.
    (It is a great way to memorize Bible verses.)

God does not promise us material blessings in this life.

We are followers of Jesus and you know what happened to him, he was crucified.
That is what we are promised. So any voice saying something different is lying.

On the subject of voices/thoughts that appear etc.
One should not debate etc or seek to ignor/supress such thoughts, but rather just acknowledge them and then move on.

Seek to learn what God wants of you through him speaking via his word.

God speaks through scripture. Satan twists scripture into a lie.

It is important, for the sake of spirituality, that we divide the man into three parts… Physical, Spiritual, and Intellectual. If E = mc2 then we can divide and conclude that...

Mass (m) = Energy (E/c2) And there are three varieties...

Natural E/c2 - All mass is basically cooled plasma, the sun is the visible form of E/c2
Mental E/c2 - Our thinking can produce creativeness, light, and good things. I would believe the devil very good at scripture.
Spiritual E/c2 - E (motivation, warmth, love) / c2 (faith, hope, charity, joy)

The Natural E/c2 in the form of mass produces a gravity that attracts other objects
The Intellectual E/c2 produces a gravity that draws us to study
The Spiritual E/c2 also has a gravity that draws and makes religion attractive

The devil cannot produce a spiritual warmth or a good kind of love.

Beloved one, if you want to hear from God, hear what Jesus Christ have said.

This is what we have heard Jesus Christ Himself said:

It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are SPIRIT and life. -John 6:63

Beloved one, you are not hearing from God because you have not perceived the words that Christ have spoken are Spirit and life.

Beloved one, consider again what Jesus Christ Himself have said to a Samaritan woman who considered Samaritan have no dealing with Jews and asked Jesus how to commune with God ; Jesus said:

God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.””
‭‭John‬ ‭4:24‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

So beloved one, unless you perceive as Jesus said that God is Spirit, you can’t commune who commune God who is Spirit. The only way you can commune with God who is Spirit to commune with Him in spirit and truth.

Since the words that Christ have spoken are Spirit, you can only commune to God the Father through the Spirit of Christ, that is, through His words. Likewise, you also may have heard:

Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. -John 14:6

So unless you are in the truth or united in Christ, you can’t commune with God.

So to commune with God, you have to have the words that Christ have spoken in your heart and to be in truth, you have to know who you are in Christ.

What is it important to have the words that Christ have spoken in our hearts? This is what we have heard:

For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. -Hebrews 4:12

When you have the word of God in your heart and mind, you can then perceive the division of soul and spirit. That is the soul is where your mind, emotion and will reside. And the spirit is where your heart, conscience is and communion happens. For the soul and spirit is like of joint and of marrow; tightly knitted together. Only through the living active word of God, you can discern your thought that is in your mind and the intention that is in the heart. When you have abundance of God’s word is in your heart and mind, you can perceive what you think and desire whether they are of God whether they are of Satan.
For God is working through His Spirit of His word but Satan is working through the flesh.

Beloved one, if your heart condemned you, consider that God is greater than your heart
and knows everything.

For we heard:
for whenever our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and He knows everything. -1 John 3:20

So beloved one, don’t put your trust in your heart of stone, put your trust in whom God sent, His Son Jesus Christ and He will give you a new heart; a heart in union with Christ that doesn’t condemn you and that gives you confidence before God.

Beloved one, in order not to be lost, you need to have zeal of God according to the knowledge of God. For this is what we have heard:

Brothers, my heart's desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved. -Romans 10:1
For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. -Romans 10:2
For, being ignorant of the righteousness of God, and seeking to establish their own, they did not submit to God's righteousness. -Romans 10:3
For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes. -Romans 10:4

So beloved one, don’t be ignorant of God’s righteousness, don’t seek to establish your own righteousness and submit yourself to God’s righteousness. And believe Christ is the end of the law of sin and death for righteousness of God.

What is the righteousness of God ? This is what we have heard:
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. -Romans 1:16
For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, "The righteous shall live by faith." -Romans 1:17

So the righteousness of God is in the gospel of Jesus Christ.

What is it important to have the righteousness of God ? This is what we have heard:

“Simon Peter, a bondservant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who have obtained like PRECIOUS FAITH with us by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ:”
‭‭II Peter‬ ‭1:1‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

So beloved one, submit yourself daily to God’s righteousness and obtain precious faith that you may draw near to God.

For we heard:
And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who seek Him. -Hebrews 11:6

Beloved one, consider what the Lord God has been spoken:
You will seek Me and find Me, when you seek Me with all your heart. -Jeremiah 29:13

Beloved one, seek the Lord wholeheartedly, and be found in the joy of the Lord.

If you have been promised all of that, and it's satan speaking to you, then you can be sure that he will add an "if" on the tail end of that promise.
And that "if" will always be a conditional promise that you have to make to him.
it will require you to behave and believe differently, and give homage to satan. And in turn, he will give you worldly power and pleasure beyond imagining.
But remember one thing, please:
Wherever the head turns, the feet, and then the body soon will follow.

So be careful what your ears hear, what your eyes see, and especially what your heart desires.

The Voice of God is not easily found brother, He is buried deep underneath under our own sins and misconceptions.

The only way we can hear the voice of God is to have faith in His Son and to heed The Word of God spoken in love for God and neighbour. This is a must!

i think it is extremely important that you only listen to the word spoken in the spirit of love for God and neighbour, not otherwise. For if it is for your big I, if you become great, or important, or really needed, then you know, no matter how nice and true it sounds, that it is from the devil. With the devil you are important, and you need to get heaven and you want to be saved, and you hope that others will see how much God loves you, or leads you, or whatever tickles your big I.

This is the test. Love for God does not desire sin, and loves the truth as revealed in Scriptures, and wants to His will, such a desire burns warmly in our God loving self, and then you know, that such is His Spirit speaking within you and leading you.

Also God speaks through our actions. If we become God, bible, people, Creation loving people then we may know He is growing within us and we will be able to hear His voice go throughout our existential being.

If on the other hand we find it hard to get on with people, often times forget to pray or heed His word, believe in God because we think it brings us glory, riches or fame, then we may know we can hear the false prophet speaking, and the truth of the word will warn us of heeding such spirituality. And nothing we hear or feel we can trust any more.

Loving true, is the biggest give away to hearing Him speak to you, for He speaks through love truthfully. He loves everyone to be saved. He loves sinners who are hurting to be set free from their captivity. He loves you unendingly, but everyone else as well.

Each time love for God, or people, speaks up in my heart i listen carefully to what i hear. If the truths i hear are spoken in love then i know the Spirit is leading me and i can safely follow. If on the other hand it is do, do, do, rule, rule, rule, a little bit here, and a little bit there, and i can assured that i will get captivated and miserable in my pursuit of freedom in Christ. That is not how the Spirit of God speaks, His voice sets us free in His truth.

The Spirit of The Lord speaks through compassion, love, kindness, thankfulness, gladness, gentleness, self control, caring, sharing, faith in God, hope in God, pride in God, Creation, other people's talents and gifts, or saving knowledge. He speaks through so many ways the truth of God's word. He lives within us when we have faith in God's love because of The blood of Christ shed for us on the cross. .

So yes understand that satan will try and captivate you through egocentricity, arrogance and human pride, worldly education, Social position and worldly/religious achievements. Such feelings and thinking speaking in you are a dead give away of unclean spirituality speaking to you, best not heed such spirit in your heart, for such thinking and feeling lead to unfaithful love burning in your heart.

Best never to read the bible in any other Spirit, but love for God and His people. For that is the only way you will hear The Word speak the truth as He is meant to be heard.

So getting to know Him is a real division between the sheep and the goats living within you. For although The Word of God invites you in your all in all, it doesn't matter what sin you done, He can wash you clean and make good come out of that part of your life, only in part will you come to Him, in your sinful self you will perish. The more you listen to His loving truth and find life there in, the more sin inside of you will die. Honestly true!

So you know that God is speaking to you when He truly lives within you. Your own inner Zion! He comes and dwells in us when we learn to love truthfully. For God is truthful love. That is how you recognise His voice from satan's. With satan it is harsh, pushy, must, do, don't do, with God's Spirit it is peaceful love growing in stature within you. His life your gift to have life in.

So loving God you praise Him freely because you love Him so dearly, it is through the loving truth living within you that you communicate best. Yet with satan you have to give your god praise even though you can't be stuffed doing that ,and then he makes you feel bad about that you don't do it good enough. With satan you are a worm when you don't do as he wants, and he cuddles your ego when he is pleased with you. With satan he sells the kingdom at a price, you have to work for it, with Jesus you receive everything for free, and you love to work in it.

Worry is a pathological liar about what will happen, could happen, might have happened, is happening. And we are told to trust the LORD >

"casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you." (1 Peter 5:7)

So, in case you are concerned about something, trust the LORD about it.

God allows the adversary to test us. You seem to seek assurance or think it can just disappear. This is called doubt. When the Holy Spirit dwells in us there is no need for assurance because doubt is not in us. The Holy Spirit is given to us as a daily reminder as we walk with Him. Assurance is the COMFORTER. Quenching His work will lead you on a path of confusion. God is not the author of confusion. Time to stop focusing on the weakness of the flesh and start partnering with Him who is in you. Blessings.

If what you want is mainly the sun and moon and stars in your own life, then the real deception is not in what you heard, but what you were ready to hear! If that is all you want, God has much better, with so much better promises, which you can find in His word.

"But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition." (1 Timothy 6:9)

This does not say those who are rich or who are trying to get rich, but the people who simply "desire" to get rich are already in deep trouble.

Possibly, your attention got tricked. We need to be prayerfully careful about where our attention is . . . all the time.

God never says anything against His Word. Satan may try to sound like God, but all he does is twist God's word.... Satan is the father of lies.

This is why it's essential to understand God's word. Scripture is inerrant, thoughts and feelings are subjective.

Amen! Well said. Many Christians have a childish and unbiblical view of the devil. He comes to us as an angel of light, slippery, cunning, counterfeiting the truth, subtly shading and twisting it out of shape, not as a bumbling imp with a pitchfork and horns, obviously evil and easily rejected.

Friend, if God has something to say to you directly, you will NEVER be able to miss it. If there is ANY doubt that God has spoken, He hasn't. Did Abraham wonder if the pre-incarnate Christ had come to him? No. Did Moses wonder if God had, in fact, spoken to him? Nope. Did Samuel? Or Daniel, Or Balaam? Or Paul, Peter and John? No. Every time God had something He wanted to say to someone directly in Scripture, He never failed to say it and those to whom He spoke never failed to know it was Him who had spoken. It is no different today. But today we have the word of God, the special revelation of God and His will to us. The promises are not important; keeping my assurance in my relationship with God is what's most important here. If I'm not hearing from God, I am truly lost in life.

This is not how God works. If your whole existence hangs on having heard correctly from God in this one instance, something has gone terribly wrong. It is not what we do, what particular ministry or work we perform in this life that is the crucial thing, but knowing, loving, enjoying and glorifying God. None of these things are in the least contingent upon a single, personal, just-for-you "message from God" being fulfilled.

I just about didn't want to post.. so much has been said here praise GOD. This is what I believe.. taking from few post here it has go in line with the word of God. And to always test the spirits.. as one here said praise GOD..a. simple say we are washed by the blood of the lamb. So what is written?

How can you know? Look up 1st Cor 13 and the gifts of the spirit to see how He moves. There is always peace.. things like that. What did Jesus say? He said my sheep know my voice the voice of a stranger they will not follow. He didnt say they will have to guess and wonder some times. No my sheep KNOW not guess not wonder but know my voice. You will just know that you know that you know.

Lol.. I remember once reading asking why this elderly man I was visiting in a home reading the word of God to him was not healed.. I didn't expect to hear but He said "remember when Daniel prayed?" What I can't explain to you is how those 4 words just exploded. How GOD took 4 words and said so much anyway I heard of that story yet had no clue where it was for I never read the book of Daniel. Lol knowing it was His voice I still asked "Ok if this is really you where is that written?" "Daniel 10:9-12". I had to look that up had no clue.

Another thing.. He could have just said Daniel 10:12...yet He said 9-12.. hmm. Well remember with God there is ALWAYS a reason. Everything He shows you tells you.. every part of it means something. Never said to just be said. He will always back up what He says with His word. Another asking if you love me just as much as some jewish person. yes yes yes I know how sad that is lol but hearing Jewish people finding Christ made me cry so much yet they kept saying those Christians have MY God.. well getting mad what then do I have?

So picturing me and some jewish person sitting to my left.. I asked. Please tell me you love me just as much.. again didn't expect anything...yet it came to life.. this hand comes down with the most beautiful tiny dark yet light brown tree with.. I have never seen a tree with so many branches and all shaped like a "U". He placed it between us then said "show me a branch that was not originally of the vine. I am the vine you are the branches". Took me over a year to figure out what He meant by "originally of the vine". I am grafted in but.. branches already there? Israel..

I said all that to show you.. He back up what He said and show'ed me with the word. Now I am 60 and that right there is the 2nd time something like that has happened. Oh I wish pray it was ever day lol. You notice how He didn't say I love you just as much.. look how GOD answered that. I would NEVER EVER thought of it like that...they are FACT originally of the vine I am grafted in. Yet loves me just as much for no one but no one can tell what branch was grafted in vs always there. Yes I was not happy with that answer.. Oh don't think just because GOD says something you will just believe.. you tend to think of Him like everyone one else.. you forget He ALWAYS speaks truth.. yet HE knows you don't believe or understand and still talks to you loves you.. NO ONE does this.. like He just smiles as you just don't get it yet.. He can't lie. What AWESOME GOD we have!

Remember...you can't make Him mad haha.. trust Him.. He can take it.. He really can.

Specifically how would know if it's Satan mimicking God's voice? I mean think about it, Satan is this unfathomably ancient being that God calls the, "wisest of the beasts of the fields" or something to that effect in Genesis. He used to be in the throne room of God; he's talked to God more than any of us and knows what he sounds like. Some people use that famous meme of God's voice calming us, leading us, encouraging us, reassuring us, and the like while the devil's voice obsesses us, condemns us, worries us, causing fear and the like but to me, that's just saying that the devil is a moron and severely underrating his intelligence. If I were the devil I wouldn't use such negative emotions as my only arsenal of deceiving the faithful. I'd use honey and not vinegar. I would calm someone when they shouldn't be calm, I would lead people in the wrong direction, I would encourage someone to believe a falsehood, I would reassure him of that falsehood, I would promise him the sun, the moon, and the stars and make like those promises come from the creator himself and when everything falls through and the promises do not come forth the man would be crushed and he would doubt he ever heard from God in the first place.

This is what I am afraid might be happening to me. I have been promised (metaphorically) the sun, moon, and stars and if the promise fails it puts doubt on if I've ever heard God in the first place. Having experimented in the area of trying to hear from God. I would say all voices in the spirit realm sound very similar. The reason for this is they use the mind to communicate with people. Voices will sound very much like our own thoughts, or similar to them. So there is basically no foolproof way to know if you are being talked to by God, or a demonic spirit.

I would say don't rely upon voices to dictate your direction in life. God's word is full of promises that we can stand on when we need a thing in our lives. As an example:

Psa 37:4 Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.

As we, respect, and follow after the LORD he will order our lives in such a way that we end up with many of the "things" that we desire. We don't need a voice to be active in our lives to confirm this.

There's no litmus test I'm afraid. There's only faith and communion and sanctification leading to wisdom and discernment. All we can do is make our minds porous to scripture and spend time in God's presence.

Of course, God is not going to ask you to go contrary to His word. However, you've learned that it isn't quite as cut and dried as that. The enemy is all about deception.

If it's consolation, we're all in the same position.As we grow older however, Christ's wisdom penetrates our mind and heart. Our will becomes consonant with God's will. Eventually, you will develop an instinct and intuition for this.

In the meantime, I would begin with this promise: Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us. Ephesians 3:20

I suppose I could be deceived just like Eve or anyone else, but I'd think that if Satan attempted to mimick God's voice while daring to speak to me, I'd end up listening for that little nuance that gives him away:
