Why is a big question. Perhaps you should rephrase it to cover all the answers as you desire them.

We have the original, or very close to it, in the Biblical texts in Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek.

Translations into English, or any other language, must answer to those texts - for linguistic accuracy.

Here's the tricky part: Translators have doctrines/dogmas/theology in their heads as they translate, but doctrine, dogmas and theology should follow after translation, not the other way around.

One example of doctrine/dogma/theology getting into the text is the idea of "hell." It is dependent on the doctrine of the immortality of the soul, which comes over from pagan Greek philosophy.

For "hell" itself, I found many related words in the OED from old languages of then-pagan northern Europe: hell, hel, helle, halja, hallja, hella, etc. The Bible has only sheol, hades, gehenna and tartarus, none of which mean anything like the usual conception of "hell." After much study, I was able to trace "hell" back to the 1611 KJV, which has "hell" and "hel." Then on to "Beowulf," which has "hell," "hel" and "hella." "Beowulf" pointed to pagan north Europe, Denmark in particular, so I looked into Norse mythology, where I found the origin of "hell." In that pagan mythology, if you did not rate going to Valhalla, you went to Helheim (house of Hel) which was ruled over by the goddess/ogress Hel.

I can point the way, and you need not follow, but I try to use Bible versions without such "pagan DNA."

You keep equating killing with ECT but ECT is far worse. Which would you prefer?
No, I’m comparing the penalty for murder with ECT. And I agree that ECT is worse than execution. But I also pointed out the crime ECT is the punishment for: rejecting the only begotten Son of God, after He became man to die for our sins.

The trouble with our conversation IMO is that I don’t think you are working with a real description of "good". What you are saying is essentially this: “If God does it it is good.”. You say this because you believe that God’s sovereignty means that God can do whatever He likes and, because it's God, whatever He does defines what goodness is. The same is true for love and justice.

I think it's better to start with a vision of what these words mean and then ask if our understanding of God is consistent with this. You're probably going to say that I'm anthropomorphizing God and telling Him what He can and can't do. Rather than get into that, the point I’m making is that ECT simply doesn't work with a description of love, goodness and justice that anyone would recognise.
Do you believe God was good when He commanded the Israelites to wipe out the Canaanites?
What you're really saying is that God’s power is the same thing as His love, goodness and justness and that's not true. God is supremely loving, good and just as well as powerful.
I’m not saying that at all. I agree that God is supremely loving, good and powerful. And He always has been, including when He ordered the Canaanites wiped out.

I don't know that He did. I'd have to look into what the scholars says but I don't feel the need.

Pretty weird

God was loving when He commanded it, knowing the evil idolatry needed to be wiped out, but also knowing that He was going to resurrect them later for eventual entry into the Kingdom. He gave us a hint when He stated that He would restore the fortunes of the children of Sodom and Gomorrah.

I kind of had a step up. I was stationed in Germany in '58-'60 I had to oversee civilian workers. I thought they were German so I tried speaking in German, which I had learned 7 years earlier. One of them said "You speak good German. We are not German we are Greek." So I started learning Greek. Not knowing that I would be studying it formally, 2 decades later. But I don't claim to be an expert. That is why I depend on the experts. The one benefit from Strong's is looking up all the occurrences of a specific word.

Not too long ago, Greek, Latin and philosophy was an indispensable part of the English literary culture. Over 50% of Oxford and Cambridge university graduated studied Greek. But by the end of WWII, it all changed with the emphasis now on technology and the modern arts.

Our friend, @Lazarus Short, has given a good answer, where you don’t feel the need to study scripture to find out:

I think you are right, only how would God know if they will forever refrain from being this type of person:
Revelation 21:8 (KJV) But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

Some seem to be in that category, or the verse wouldn’t be necessary.

You misunderstand what I said. I don't feel the need to study the verses you've cited because I don't think your interpretation of them is credible and worth refuting.

That’s exactly what I was thinking of you. I don’t think I’m misunderstanding at all.

But if you apply that standard to anyone you are attempting to change their minds, there’s no point, because nobody could EVER change his mind—we’d all be locked in on whatever false (potentially) doctrine we’d stumbled upon in the first place.

But we don’t maintain the same beliefs we started life with. We need to be like little children, believing what God tells us and changing our ways to His ways.

Have you ever done any thorough study on your own about hell? Or does your understanding derive from what you read on anonymous websites?
…..Concerning only the existence of a Jewish belief in hell not the validity or in validity of the historical faith, beliefs and practices of the ancient Jews, three incontrovertible Jewish sources are quoted, below; the Jewish Encyclopedia, Encyclopedia Judaica and the Talmud.
…..According to these sources, among the יהודים/Yehudim/ιουδαιων/Youdaion/Jews in Israel, before and during the time of Jesus, there was a significant belief in a place of everlasting torment of the wicked and they called it both sheol and gehinnom, which are translated Hades and Gehenna, respectively, in both the 225 BC LXX and the NT.
…..There were different factions within Judaism; Sadducees, Pharisees, Essenes etc. and different beliefs about resurrection, hell etc. These differing beliefs do not alter or disprove anything in the following post.
[1] Jewish Encyclopedia, Gehenna
The place where children were sacrificed to the god Moloch … in the "valley of the son of Hinnom," to the south of Jerusalem (Josh. xv. 8, passim; II Kings xxiii. 10; Jer. ii. 23; vii. 31-32; xix. 6, 13-14). … the valley was deemed to be accursed, and "Gehenna" therefore soon became a figurative equivalent for "hell." Hell, like paradise, was created by God (Sotah 22a);[“Soon” in this verse would be about 700 BC +/-]
[Note: this is according to the ancient Jews, long before the Christian era, NOT any assumed/alleged bias of “modern” Christian translators. DA]
(I)n general …sinners go to hell immediately after their death. The famous teacher Johanan b. Zakkai wept before his death because he did not know whether he would go to paradise or to hell (Ber. 28b). The pious go to paradise, and sinners to hell(B.M. 83b).
But as regards the heretics, etc., and Jeroboam, Nebat's son, hell shall pass away, but they shall not pass away" (R. H. 17a; comp. Shab. 33b). All that descend into Gehenna shall come up again, with the exception of three classes of men: those who have committed adultery, or shamed their neighbors, or vilified them (B. M. 58b).[/i]
… heretics and the Roman oppressors go to Gehenna, and the same fate awaits the Persians, the oppressors of the Babylonian Jews (Ber. 8b). When Nebuchadnezzar descended into hell, [שאול/Sheol] all its inhabitants were afraid that he was coming to rule over them (Shab. 149a; comp. Isa. xiv. 9-10). The Book of Enoch [x. 6, xci. 9, etal] also says that it is chiefly the heathen who are to be cast into the fiery pool on the Day of Judgment (x. 6, xci. 9, et al). "The Lord, the Almighty, will punish them on the Day of Judgment by putting fire and worms into their flesh, so that they cry out with pain unto all eternity" (Judith xvi. 17). The sinners in Gehenna will be filled with pain when God puts back the souls into the dead bodies on the Day of Judgment, according toIsa. xxxiii. 11 (Sanh. 108b).

[2] Encyclopedia Judaica:
Gehinnom (Heb. גֵּי בֶן־הִנֹּם, גֵּי בְנֵי הִנֹּם, גֵּיא בֶן־הִנֹּם, גֵּיא הִנֹּם; Gr. Γέεννα; "Valley of Ben-Hinnom, Valley of [the Son(s) of] Hinnom," Gehenna), a valley south of Jerusalem on one of the borders between the territories of Judah and Benjamin, between the Valley of *Rephaim and *En-Rogel (Josh. 15:8; 18:16). It is identified with Wadi er-Rababi.
…..During the time of the Monarchy, Gehinnom, at a place called Topheth, was the site of a cult which involved the burning of children (II Kings 23:10; Jer. 7:31; 32:35 et al.; ). Jeremiah repeatedly condemned this cult and predicted that on its account Topheth and the Valley of the Son of Hinnom would be called the Valley of the "Slaughter" (Jer. 19:5–6).
In Judaism the name Gehinnom is generally used as an appellation of the place of torment reserved for the wicked after death. The New Testament used the Greek form Gehenna in the same sense.

[3] Talmud -Tractate Rosh Hashanah Chapter 1.
The school of Hillel says: . . . but as for Minim, [i.e. followers of Jesus] informers and disbelievers, who deny the Torah, or Resurrection, or separate themselves from the congregation, or who inspire their fellowmen with dread of them, or who sin and cause others to sin, as did Jeroboam the son of Nebat and his followers, they all descend to Gehenna, and are judged there from generation to generation, as it is said [Isa. lxvi. 24]:
"And they shall go forth and look upon the carcases of the men who have transgressed against Me; for their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched." Even when Gehenna will be destroyed, they will not be consumed, as it is written[Psalms, xlix. 15]: "And their forms wasteth away in the nether world," which the sages comment upon to mean that their forms shall endure even when the grave is no more.
Concerning them Hannah says [I Sam. ii. 10]: "The adversaries of the Lord shall be broken to pieces."
Link: Tract Rosh Hashana: Chapter I.
When Jesus taught e.g.,
• “Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:” Matthew 25:41
• "these shall go away into eternal punishment, Matthew 25:46"
• "the fire of hell [Γέεννα/gehenna] where the fire is not quenched and the worm does not die, repeated 3 times Mark 9:43-48"
• "cast into a fiery furnace where there will be wailing and gnashing of teeth,” Matthew 13:42, Matthew 13:50
• “But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.” Matthew 18:6
• “And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.” Matthew 7:23
• “woe unto that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! it had been good for that man if he had not been born. ” Matthew 26:24
• “But I say unto you, that it shall be more tolerable in that day for Sodom, than for that city.” Luke 10:12
…..These teachings tacitly reaffirmed and sanctioned a then existing significant Jewish view of eternal hell, outlined above.
In Matt. 18:6, 26:24 and Luk 10:12, see above, Jesus teaches that there is a punishment worse than death or nonexistence.
…..A punishment worse than death without mercy is also mentioned in Hebrews 10:28-31.
Heb 10:28 He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses:
29 Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?
30 For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people.
31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
…..how much sorer punishment,””Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord,””It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God” certainly does not sound like everyone will be saved, no matter what.
…..Jesus is quoted as using the word death 17 times in the gospels, if He intended to say eternal death, in Matt 25:46, that is what He would have said but He didn’t, He said “eternal punishment.
….The Sadducees did not believe in the resurrection, they knew that everybody died; rich, poor, young, old, good, bad, men, women, children, infants and knew that it was permanent and often it did not involve punishment.
When Jesus taught “eternal punishment” the Sadducees would not have understood it as simply death, it would have meant something worse to them.
…..Concerning “punishment” one early church father wrote,
“Then these reap no advantage from their punishment, as it seems: moreover, I would say that they are not punished unless they are conscious of the punishment.” Justin Martyr [A.D. 110-165.] Dialogue with Trypho Chapter 4
…..Jesus undoubtedly knew what the Jews, believed about hell. If that Jewish teaching was wrong, why didn’t Jesus tell them there was no hell, no eternal punishment etc? Why would Jesus teach “eternal punishment,” etc. to Jews who believed, "The Lord, the Almighty, will punish them on the Day of Judgment by putting fire and worms into their flesh, so that they cry out with pain unto all eternity," which would only encourage and reinforce their beliefs in “hell”?

"What Does the Bible Say About Hell?" is a deeper question than you know.

Actually it wasn't a question. It was a link.
What Does the Bible Say About Hell?

Revelation 21:8
But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.”

Matthew 25:46
And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

Matthew 10:28
And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in γεέννῃ (geennē)

Revelation 20:10
And the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.

Romans 6:23
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Matthew 25:41
“Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

Revelation 20:15
And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

Matthew 5:22
But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to γέενναν (geennan).

Revelation 14:11
And the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever, and they have no rest, day or night, these worshipers of the beast and its image, and whoever receives the mark of its name.”

2 Thessalonians 1:9
They will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might,

Matthew 13:50
And throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

2 Peter 2:4
For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but ταρταρώσας (tartarōsas) and committed them to chains of gloomy darkness to be kept until the judgment;

Jude 1:7
Just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which likewise indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural desire, serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire.

Revelation 20:14
Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire.

John 3:16-18
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

Mark 9:43-48
And if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than with two hands to go to γέενναν (geennan), to the unquenchable fire. And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life lame than with two feet to be thrown into hell. And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into ἄσβεστον (asbeston) fire, ‘where their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.’

Revelation 19:20
And the beast was captured, and with it the false prophet who in its presence had done the signs by which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped its image. These two were thrown alive into the lake of fire that burns with sulfur.

Matthew 23:33
You serpents, you brood of vipers, how are you to escape being sentenced to γεέννης (geennēs)?

Luke 16:19-31
“There was a rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. And at his gate was laid a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man's table. Moreover, even the dogs came and licked his sores. The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham's side. The rich man also died and was buried, and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side. ...

Matthew 5:29
If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into γέενναν (geennan).

John 3:16
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

Daniel 12:2
And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.

Luke 16:23
And in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side.

Mark 9:48
‘where their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.’

Luke 12:5
But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into γέενναν (geennan). Yes, I tell you, fear him!

Acts 2:27
For you will not abandon my soul to Hades, or let your Holy One see corruption.

Hebrews 9:27
And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment,

Jesus undoubtedly knew what the Jews, believed about hell. If that Jewish teaching was wrong, why didn’t Jesus tell them there was no hell, no eternal punishment etc?

Christian universalists like every other Christian tradition believes that hell is a reality so you don't need to convince anyone of that. The question is, what is the nature of this reality. ECT? Annihilation? Or a state from which we will be redeemed? Most universalists believe that hell is not simply retributive punishment but a difficult but corrective state from which we will eventually leave. Some universalists think it has a retributive dimension, while others don't.

So it is not hell that universalists deny so much as certain views about hell.

Well he didn't. He only spoke of ”aionios kolasis” which means corrective punishment for a limited time duration whereas the Pharisees spoke of "adialeiptos timoria" which means everlasting vengeful punishment. Most scholars believe that ”aionios kolasis” has been mistranslated in most English Bibles as "eternal punishment" but we've already had this argument.

You may read the bit about undying worms literally but perhaps you should look at the whole passage in the light of Christ’s teaching. We can rejoice over the destruction of God’s enemies only if we first hate them. But we are commanded not to hate people but to hate sin. So, the enemy being destroyed by God isn’t people, but sin. We can then look on the dead bodies of our sinful past life with loathing. Isn’t that what Paul did whenever he called himself the “chief of sinners”?

For some reason people always bring up "their worm dieth not" that Jesus quoted from Isaiah 66. But Isaiah was talking about Babylon destroying Jerusalem and the Temple. Within 40 years (a generation) of Jesus quoting Isaiah, Rome destroyed destroyed Jerusalem and the Temple. I think a lot of things Jesus said, was about Israel's impending holocaust.

Thanks for the explanation. It's pretty clear then that these worms aren't immortal and forever eating of the bodies because the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple was of course a finite event in time. No doubt it felt like forever to the people going it though.

Those all aren't necessarily about the same thing, the same place and the same outcome.
I didn't screen them for that purpose.

Did you need me to order and separate them better?

Matthew 3:12
His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”

Psalm 16:10
For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let your holy one see corruption.

Psalm 9:17
The wicked shall return to Sheol, all the nations that forget God.

Matthew 8:12
While the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”

Acts 2:31
He foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption.

Matthew 13:42
And throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Proverbs 15:24
The path of life leads upward for the prudent, that he may turn away from Sheol beneath.

Revelation 1:18
And the living one. I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades.

Matthew 18:9
And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into the hell of fire.

Luke 10:15
And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? You shall be brought down to Hades.

Matthew 7:13-14
“Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.

Matthew 13:41-42
The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will gather out of his kingdom all causes of sin and all law-breakers, and throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Psalm 145:20
The Lord preserves all who love him, but all the wicked he will destroy.

Proverbs 23:14
If you strike him with the rod, you will save his soul from Sheol.

Revelation 20:1-15
Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, holding in his hand the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain. And he seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years, and threw him into the pit, and shut it and sealed it over him, so that he might not deceive the nations any longer, until the thousand years were ended. After that he must be released for a little while. Then I saw thrones, and seated on them were those to whom the authority to judge was committed. Also I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for the testimony of Jesus and for the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or its image and had not received its mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended. This is the first resurrection. ...

Revelation 20:13-15
And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and they were judged, each one of them, according to what they had done. Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

Revelation 20:14-15
Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

Psalm 86:13
For great is your steadfast love toward me; you have delivered my soul from the depths of Sheol.

Matthew 18:8
And if your hand or your foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life crippled or lame than with two hands or two feet to be thrown into the eternal fire.

Proverbs 15:11
Sheol and Abaddon lie open before the Lord; how much more the hearts of the children of man!

John 5:29
And come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.

James 3:6
And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell.

Proverbs 9:18
But he does not know that the dead are there, that her guests are in the depths of Sheol.

Psalm 139:8
If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there!

Revelation 14:10
He also will drink the wine of God's wrath, poured full strength into the cup of his anger, and he will be tormented with fire and sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb.

Isaiah 66:24
“And they shall go out and look on the dead bodies of the men who have rebelled against me. For their worm shall not die, their fire shall not be quenched, and they shall be an abhorrence to all flesh.”

Matthew 24:51
And will cut him in pieces and put him with the hypocrites. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Matthew 5:29-30
If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.

John 5:28-29
Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.

Matthew 11:23
And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? You will be brought down to Hades. For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.

Luke 3:17
His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”

Have you ever done any thorough study on your own about hell?

Anyone without faith is already in Hell.
But it will get much worse after death when you're alone there.
There will be no distractions that living people always cling to.
That is your immediate judgment on your death. Uninterrupted silence.
