Would homeless people in America ever have to resort to stealing food?

I hear many places won't hire someone for being homeless even if the homeless is capable of doing the job, how else are these people suppose to survive if the only way to survive is to make enough money to go buy food?

It is human instinct to preserve ones life, we are driven to stay alive. Nobody is going to starve themselves to death.

I've heard of homeless people stealing food from convenience stores, but what other choice do they have when they are hungry and nobody hires them because of bias?

It reminds me of the story of the rich man and Lazarus.

I can see that being a problem now, since a lot of employers only will pay someone who has direct deposit, and to have direct deposit, it takes having a bank account, and having a bank account requires a physical address. It is a tragedy that we have homeless people in a nation with such wealth, where we have about 100,000 millionaires and around 100 billionaires, and now we have several companies with market values of over $1 trillion dollars. I do know a lot of churches have soup kitchens, and we have a lot of government-subsidized housing, so there are some support systems in the USA, but we could have more and not have so many people living in streets. But don't think for a minute that this is a USA problem. I've seen far more homeless people living in other countries, so the problem is worldwide and actually much worse overseas. You would be shocked at the homeless in European countries and Caribbean countries.

Generally, no.
There is usually a "means" test to screen out the frauds, though.
That same test would probably screen out addicts that have otherwise sufficient funds but choose their addictions over food, instead.

I am sure there is a small percentage of homeless that fall into the category you have described…but there is a diversity of homelessness with varying conditions and circumstances.

Some that have mental illness, many are fine where they are at, some want to stay off the grid, many of the sign people “will work for food” really just want $$$… and many sign people make more $$$ than you can imagine. Others have SS checks or other income, and then there is drugs and alcohol.

Of coarse there are some that have hit hard times and are looking for a way out…
