I went to the petstore & got talked into trying 1 black neon tetra. It swam in small circles right away, & was swimming all crazy a couple hours later.

Something is wrong.

My water tests fine.
So how is the tetra today?

I got a female betta fish last night. She explored her aquarium & ate a couple pellets. She seems to be doing okay. She is actively swimming, maybe a bit too actively, which is making me nervous. I wish she'd calm down just a little bit. I put in a teaspoon of the Petsmart bacteria last night & this morning. Ammonia is 1......which could be too high.........I got a positive Nitrite test as well. She ate her pellet of food this morning.

I set up a 5 gallon aquarium for a betta fish last Tuesday. I added it the next night. It died this past Tuesday. I was told they were hardy fish & you don't need to "cycle" your aquarium. I got nitrite & nitrate stick tester & never got a reading on them, even after the fish was added, they were always zero. But it died. Was swimming really weird the past couple days. I'm trying to properly cycle now. I'm guessing it dued due to amonia poisioning. I got amonia liquid tester, & nitrite & nitrate stick tester.

I re-filled tank Wednesday, put bacteria start-up in it. I tested amonia last night & this morning & it's still very low. Nothing on nitrite & nitrate yet. From what I'm reading, amonia should go up, then down. When it goes down, nitrite should go up. When it goes down & I start getting tests on nitrate, that's when it's fish ready.

Any guesses on when that'll be for a 5 gallon tank? (It is 79 degrees, w/ heater & filter) I'm unclear if I should be daily adding fish food pellet for amonia to rise? Should I be doing partial water changes (seems to depend on the article I read, but seems like no until I get nitrate).

I had fish tank growing up (2nd grade thru 12th grade), so fishkeeping isn't completely new to me, but I was pretty young when the tank was first getting started & my parents did all that work. I don't think they ever really tested it, just put the bacteria stuff in & waited it to cycle for a week or so, & that was a 20-30 gallon tank.

Any other aquarists out there? What kind of fish do you have? How big a tank?

Whats the PH of your water? I don’t know anything about betas but I do know that if your using tap water the PH can get really high sometimes depending on your water source. The last place I lived the PH was completely off the chart it was so high. I had to mix it with distilled bottle water which typically has a PH around 6 to get my water to a nice 7.2-7.6. Then again you might’ve just got a bad fish. Most pet stores will allow you to return a fish if it dies within 14 days but you have to bring a water sample so they can check to make sure it wasn’t your water that killed it.

Ha ha, no, no algae. I wish!

Some good news: I think it finally has that aquarium-water smell.

I have fake decorations.

If it seems like I'm still not making progress by next week, I'll go to the pet store & see if they have any advice.

I got a small bamboo tree and I have it hanging in the top of the tank. Supposedly they help keep the nitrate level down but I’ve never had any nitrate or ammonia problems in my tank.

Are you acclimating the fish before you release it into the tank? Place the bag in the tank and wait about 30-45 minutes before you release the fish and don’t pour the water from the bag into your tank.

That could've been the problem w/ the tetra. I didn't use any water from the cup for this betta.

Yes, I float the bag/cup for a half hour first.

She seems to be doing okay. Ammonia flirts between 1 & 2. She is a very active swimmer, which apparently means they're stressed. But she eats her pellets & I think she sleeps at night. Hopefully ammonia will go down.....

Same thing. Ammonia seems to be staying at 2.......I wish it'd go down......She's still very active swimmer. I think she's stressed.......I wonder if I should be doing water changes consistently until ammonia goes down? I did one the other day.

Ammonia still around 1-2. I've been doing water changes twice a week.

But bad news: Today I see she has Ick. :sob: I got medication for her. Hopefully it goes away in a week.

She swims alongside the glass a lot. The ammonia is definitely getting to her, I think.

She rests more. Still fighting ick. One side of her looks good, the other not so much, but it's mainly on her fins, looks like.

Still can't get ammonia to zero, & I tried cycling almost 3 weeks before adding her, & she's been in the tank almost 3 weeks. Plus filter's been on tank 2 months.

Today is her worse day. Still fighting ick on Day 8. She's sitting on the bottom a lot today. Ick doesn't look like it's getting better. Didn't eat. Not good.

Tempted to put her out of her misery so I can try to start stabilizing the tank again sooner than later. :(

I have had my betta a month. Tonight I got 3 tetras & a snail to go with her.

It seems to be doing okay. She's tired to go after the tetras a couple times but they are too quick for her. For the most part she ignores them. She likes the sides of the tank so they stay in the middle. They really school! The snail is a lot cooler than I thought it'd be. It was like it was doing laps around the tank, but now it's just sort of sitting.

Hopefully it goes okay & the cycle doesn't get overwhelmed. I'll be testing it everyday for ammonia.

I was just cleaning my tank w/ my net & didn't realize till after my net was out of the water for a minute or so my betta got caught in it. She lost a lot of color but when I realized my mistake, I put her in the water & a lot of the color came back. She is swimming well now, recovered fast, as if she wasn't out. She does have a little part on her head where it looks like scales got torn off, but I think it was like that before, it just looks a bit bigger now.

I put some stress coat in.
