Here's a new series that started with a self-published first volume that did so well, Orbit Publishing picked up the other two volumes in the trilogy. Some of the themes, names and images of the story give me cause to suspect the author may be a Christian.

Author: James Islington
Title: The Licanius Trilogy

I liked the Wheel Of Time series...sort of. It began better than it ended. Around volume five or six, the series began to feel driven by profit rather than by a creative impulse and a story worth telling. But I very much liked several of the characters and seeing their transformation over time, as well as the complex world-building.

Tad Williams has some pretty excellent high fantasy stuff. Avoid his urban fantasy.

Any wheel of time fan here? Any books you recommend, that is almost as good as wheel of time?

I seem to remember Once Upon a Hero by Michael Stackpole being good.

C.S. Lewis Narnia series.

Brandon Sanderson's Stormlight archives and Patrick Rothfuss' Kingkiller Chronicles.

Mistborn?
Stormlight Archives?

Stormlight > Mistborn IMO.

The Kingkiller Chronicles?

That series started out great. Too bad it may never be completed or updated.

Once the TV rights to the story were bought out, it seemed like the books were frozen similar to George Martin.

I only ever read the first three books in the series (not New Spring). I got disappointed at how every young adult from a village in the middle of nowhere all turn out to be powerful entities in the world. I don't like stories where heroes actually have some extra power over the ordinary people. (I don't enjoy the ending of the Belgariad for the same reason).

Bilbo and Frodo are ordinary hobbits who get changed by their circumstances.
Harry Potter is a fairly ordinary wizard in the world in which he inhabits. His resilience is what makes him interesting.

One of these days I'll read the whole of the Wheel of Time as it was my brother's favourite series.

Have you read the Harry Potter books?

Harry Potter turns out to be somewhat disappointing in the way you're referring to. I wish the Peverell aspect of the story had never been included.

I find so much that is opposed to my faith and that is also highly "woke" in modern fantasy fiction that I've pretty much ceased to read any of it. Even some of the older writers I thought could be trusted not to yield to the "woke" mob, have caved. Terry Brooks is an unfortunate example. The violence, gore, demonism, sexuality and openly anti-religious stuff overflowing from modern fantasy fiction is, in my opinion, utterly ruining the genre.

I disagree. Most of the pure blood families could trace their ancestry to the three brothers. The Malfoys and the Longbottoms were both descendents.

Harry got an invisibility cloak, but other people can make themselves invisible also. Harry was an average wizard.
