Deuteronomy 19:15
“A single witness shall not suffice against a person for any crime or for any wrong in connection with any offense that he has committed. Only on the evidence of two witnesses or of three witnesses shall a charge be established.

Matthew 18:16

But if he will not listen, take one or two others along, so that 'every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.'

John 5
If I testify about myself, my testimony is not true. 32 There is another who testifies in my favor, and I know that his testimony about me is true.

33 “You have sent to John and he has testified to the truth. 34 Not that I accept human testimony; but I mention it that you may be saved. 35 John was a lamp that burned and gave light, and you chose for a time to enjoy his light.

36 “I have testimony weightier than that of John. For the works that the Father has given me to finish—the very works that I am doing—testify that the Father has sent me. 37 And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me. You have never heard his voice nor seen his form, 38 nor does his word dwell in you, for you do not believe the one he sent. 39 You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me, 40 yet you refuse to come to me to have life.

41 “I do not accept glory from human beings, 42 but I know you. I know that you do not have the love of God in your hearts. 43 I have come in my Father’s name, and you do not accept me; but if someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him. 44 How can you believe since you accept glory from one another but do not seek the glory that comes from the only God?

45 “But do not think I will accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses, on whom your hopes are set. 46 If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me. 47 But since you do not believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I say?”

2 Corinthians 13:1
This will be my third visit to you. “Every matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.”

1 Timothy 5:19
Do not entertain an accusation against an elder unless it is brought by two or three witnesses.

Jesus taught this principle and applied it to HIMSELF. Paul used this Biblical principle as well with correcting the sinning brother as did Jesus in Matthew 18. It stands up in them human courts and the Divine court of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

hope this helps !!!

Dear YHWH,
I agree with your comments but I want to take them a step farther.

Two or three witnesses of scripture are likewise required to prove a truth.

Here is where Christ taught this:

Luke 22:35-38 And he said unto them, When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked ye any thing? And they said, Nothing. Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one. For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerning me have an end. And they said, Lord, behold, here are TWO SWORDS. And he said unto them, It is enough.

Christ ALWAYS teaches in His spiritual language. In this passage, He is sending out His apostles to preach. He tells to the take a sword. In Christ's spiritual language, a SWORD represents the Word of God. How do we know this? By comparing "spiritual with spiritual".

1Cor 2:13 These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual.

The teachings of Christ and the other writers uses "another tongue" (spiritual language).

Isa 28: 10-12 For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little: 11 For with stammering lips and ANOTHER TONGUE will he speak to this people. 12 But the word of the LORD was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken.

Christ's communicates this way in scripture so that only those who have had their spiritual blindness healed can understand the truth. The truth of God in scripture is written for only the Elect, the First-Fruits of this age. For everyone else, Christ remains "veiled".

Spiritual language uses the Hebrew and Greek languages but the words carry meanings which are different than what man's wisdom teaches. In Christ's language, He uses spiritual symbols to communicate His message. To learn what these symbols represent, Paul says we must "compare spiritual with spiritual". In other words, we are to use scripture to determine the meaning of Christ's spiritual symbols.

In Luke 22:35-38, Christ uses various symbols. One of which is the word "sword". Using "man's wisdom", a sword is a steel blade used for cutting. But in Christ's spiritual language, a SWORD carries a different meaning:

Eph 6:17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

Heb 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword...

Rev 1:16 And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp two-edged sword...

By comparing "spiritual with spiritual", it is easy to understand that a SWORD represents the Word of God.

Using this definition in the verses from Luke, Christ is saying that when we go out preach the Gospel, we are to take along the Word of God. He further states the "two swords are enough" meaning that a double witness of scripture is required to prove a spiritual truth.

The second witness of this truth is given to us in the verse you quoted:

2Cor 13:1 This will be my third visit to you. “Every matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.”

Thanks for your response. The principle of the 2/3 witnesses is one that stands up in a courtroom, a court of law where a defense is made for the accusations brought forth against the accused. I'm talking about its literal meaning in the OP and how the OT/NT applied that principle in both testaments. Its a principle that has not changed since it was instituted in the Law of Moses. We use it in our courts today. Its why my word against yours doesn't stand up and why Jesus in John 5 confirmed His own testimony would not be true if it was just His own and used that principle against His accusers the Pharisees who knew this law and its principle inside and out. This is how they were to get Him crucified because they brought witnesses against Him.

hope this helps !!!

You would still have to check that the witnesses were not in collusion.

Nice! I have been trying to explain why some teachings from scripture are
not supported and this explains that. God never left any one teaching to one writer.
