Despite this one decision to mandate a no-mask policy for Florida schools, Ron DeSantis has been best governor Florida has had since Gov Thomas Leroy Collins.

His incompetence in dealing with the pandemic has made Florida a leader in deaths. Doesn't sound like a good job.

He's had one emergency, and he bungled it. And it's hurt him. He was in the mid 60s in approval just a few months ago.
Only half of Florida voters support re-electing DeSantis and Rubio
Only half of Florida voters support re-electing DeSantis and Rubio, but they’re still polling ahead of likely Democratic challengers

He's still slightly ahead of possible democrats, but he's lost a lot of ground. And the deaths continue to rise at a faster rate. The governor now compiles the statistics, (and started ignoring deaths from visitors and others previously included in state reports) but the latest data, from Aug 20 shows daily deaths shot up to 315.

By the way, The Barbarian, despite all your anti-DeSantis rhetoric, I will vote this time for Ron Desantis in whatever office he seeks because he is just that great of a governor.

He had one crisis, and he blew it. He's got the worst results of any governor in the nation right now. Which is why his approval rate is declining.

And a little advice - stop being such an overly zealous pom pom person for DeSantis.

I would gladly agreed with you if I had voted for him as governor but I didn't. I have seen his merits and have changed my views on the guy. You on the other hand have despised this guy pretty much from the get go. I can't even count the number of posts you have against this guy here. Its like every little detail of Ron DeSantis' life you scrutinize. You remind me of Fox News trying to character assassinate Andrew Cuomo, you just can't seem to stop throwing the mud.

Yes, for now I will be a pom pom person for Governor DeSantis because he has done a great job so far as governor of Florida. Somebody has to oppose your hatred for the guy. But if he changes and starts making bad decisions, I will change my mind and be denouncing him too.

Yes, for now I will be a pom pom person for Governor DeSantis because he has done a great job so far as governor of Florida.

So far, this morning...
Florida Department of Health Updates New COVID-19 Cases, Announces One Hundred Seventy-Three Deaths Related to COVID-19

On August 20, the United Stats had 1232 deaths from COVID-19. Over a quarter of them were residents of Florida.

That doesn't sound like a "great job."

The good news is that local governments and school districts are beginning to openly defy his decrees, and protecting their schoolchildren and citizens anyway.

Big Florida school districts defy governor over mask mandate
Big Florida school districts defy governor over mask mandate

When two school districts in Florida defied Gov. Ron DeSantis' (R) order banning mask mandates in schools, the state Board of Education took swift action, agreeing to sanction local officials. Education officials in Alachua and Broward counties are aware of the governor's policy, but they've decided to prioritize public health over the Republican's political agenda.

The consequences are likely to be significant, including possible funding cuts and the removal of local elected officials from their positions. For DeSantis and his allies, the purpose of the pushback is obvious: the state hopes to pressure Alachua and Broward counties into complying with the governor's dangerous policy, while discouraging other communities weighing their next moves.

What the DeSantis administration probably didn't expect was that the strategy would backfire. Not only are Alachua and Broward counties refusing to back down, as Politico reported, other communities have decided to join them.
Governors' efforts backfire as more locals defy anti-mask policies

DeSantis is getting corrected by his own people now:

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – A member of Gov. Ron DeSantis’s transition team who has advised Republicans on health-related issues is warning parents that unmasked children are spreading COVID-19 in schools, putting those students at risk for a rare but potentially fatal medical condition.

“If your child is in a school now, and there is no masking, it is highly likely your child is being exposed, even if they are asymptomatic,” Alan Levine, CEO of Tennessee-based hospital system Ballad Health said.

Levine was co-chair of DeSantis’ Transition Advisory Committee on Health and Wellness.
DeSantis health advisor warns ‘more children and teens will be hospitalized’ from COVID-19

Here's why refusing to effectively control the pandemic is such a dereliction of duty for the governor:

More Florida children were hospitalized with COVID-19 on Tuesday than in any other state, reflecting a rapid rise in serious illness among an age group considered to be at the lowest risk of severe outcomes from the disease and many still not eligible for the vaccine.
https://www.miamiherald.com/news/coronavirus/article253250073.html#storylink=cpy

The crisis is no longer something he can handle. He's surrendered, and now his big emphasis it to provide an unapproved drug touted by one of his large donors, which may help people after they become seriously ill. The drug cannot be given to children under 12.

Because of the danger of the flu + covid many people took the flu vaccine, plus lets not forget despite the conspiracies covid showed up at the point when the flu naturally starts to disappear in the west,.
Wrong on all counts.

Flu has been nonexistent according to CDC for over 1 1/2 years, almost 2 full flu cycles.

Flu vaccine effectiveness is always low ranging from 10% to 60%, the average is about 40%. Never has the USA reached or even come close to herd immunity levels from the flu vaccine. There is absolutely no way the vaccine eliminated the flu 2 seasons in a row.

Try again. This time don’t guess. Learn the science.

Apparently, you really do not know science, so as you told me, learn the science!

See, I learned the science, it is how I can confidently say what I have. You listen to conspiracy clap-trap. You didn't learn the science. You only learned what proves your bias against masks, vaccinations and social distancing.

You do you. I'm done arguing with you.

In other words, your bias is defeated, you cannot explain why flu has disappeared but covid has not.

Don’t feel bad, this govt medical community are stumped as well.

Turns out, there's a thing called "minimum infectious dose." And that is why social distancing works.

Sustain Cities Soc. 2020 Nov;62:102390
The efficacy of social distance and ventilation effectiveness in preventing COVID-19 transmission
Abstract

........

You didn’t read the article.

It’s a theoretical study based on a single real case. And it only considers infection by inhaling virus, it ignored contamination of objects. Person A sneezes, virus laden droplets land on surfaces, 5 minutes later Person B comes along and touches the surface then rubs their eye or scratches their nose or touches food.

Even if you believe the study it claims tThe distance is 5.2 - 9.8 ft for large droplets due to talking (not sneezing or coughing) and up to 26 feet in calm air (that means indoors).

Social distancing in the USA is 6 ft.

So wow did you just shoot down your own arguement.

And destroyed any credibility you may have had in the forum.

Negative. I believe that I explained the science, but you're choosing to ignore it because either you don't understand true science or you prefer to listen to conspiracy sites that use fake science to further their agenda of separating the masses.

Nope. I presented a legitimate medical conundrum - why is the flu gone yet covid so widespread - and you cannot explain it.

Don’t feel bad, it’s a real question being asked by real doctors. It’s a very pointed question because it raises a very obvious troubling question - is the data being manipulated? There has been no explanation to date.

But I understand the frustration, it’s hard when your deeply held bias is exposed as false.

Also, no frustration here. I am starting to just let people stick with the crazy if that is where they choose to remain.

You didn’t read the article.

You didn't understand the article; read it again slowly and look up words you don't know.

And it only considers infection by inhaling virus, it ignored contamination of objects.

Masks don't protect you against fomites. That's why doctors say that you should wear masks and wash your hands frequently. The study was to determine the effectiveness of masks protecting people against airborne virus.

As you learned;
We found that cotton masks, surgical masks, and N95 masks all have a protective effect with respect to the transmission of infective droplets/aerosols of SARS-CoV-2 and that the protective efficiency was higher when masks were worn by a virus spreader.

No wonder you're confused.

Yeah, that's kind of where it is for some of them. But there are more than a few people here who are skeptical of the things doctors have found about protection and are honestly open to discussion. The crazies are useful by bad example.

I've just been fighting this fight since the beginning and in many fronts. I grow weary.

Nope. I presented a legitimate medical conundrum - why is the flu gone yet covid so widespread - and you cannot explain it.

Because influenza is neither as infectious as COVID-19 via aerosols or as lethal. And it's much more infectious by surfaces, which means handwashing and disinfection, alone with masks, pretty much ended any possibility of an influenza epidemic this past year.

Why the Flu Season Basically Disappeared This Year
  • Flu season has been mild this year, thanks to the mitigation measures used to contain COVID-19, such as physical distancing and mask wearing.
  • School and office closures also contributed to the unusually inactive flu season.
  • The mitigation measures curbed influenza activity even though COVID-19 surged.
Why the Flu Season Almost Disappeared This Year

You can't explain it, for reasons everyone has seen. But doctors and epidemiologists can.

IIRC, you're on the front lines? If so, don't let the cranks get you down. And keep in mind, anything is simple if one doesn't know anything about it.

Which is no excuse, I suppose, but does explain some behavior.

Things continue to spiral out of control in Florida, while Governor Ron has a hissy over school boards ignoring his commands:

With the number of new COVID-19 infections surging across Florida, new data show just two pediatric intensive care unit beds remained available in Broward hospitals as of Thursday morning.

At least 1,762 patients positive for the coronavirus had been admitted to local hospitals as of 11 a.m. Thursday, up from 1,748 a day earlier, according to the data compiled by Broward County’s Emergency Management Division.

At least 237 COVID-positive patients were on ventilators, the data show, accounting for 30 percent of the county’s 782 ventilators.

Adult intensive care units were 94 percent full, with 33 ICU beds still available, records show. Pediatric ICUs were 97 percent full.

According to the county, the information used to compile the data was submitted by local hospitals and has not been audited.

At least 15,402 new COVID-19 infections were reported by the state on Thursday, the latest day for which statewide case totals were available, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

U.S. Department of Education ‘Stands With You,’ It Tells Florida Superintendents Willing to Enact Mask Mandates
The U.S. Department of Education is “deeply concerned” about Gov. Ron DeSantis’ executive order seeking to ban school mask mandates and is ready to help districts directly, the federal agency said in a letter to the governor Friday.

“Florida’s recent actions to block school districts from voluntarily adopting science-based strategies for preventing the spread of COVID-19 that are aligned with the guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention puts students and staff at risk,” U.S. Education Secretary Miguel Cardona wrote to DeSantis and Florida Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran.

The letter also said President Joe Biden’s administration will work with school districts and educators directly if the Florida Department of Education does not distribute federal pandemic aid to the districts. Cardona wrote that the federal American Rescue Plan Act signed by Biden in March allocated some $7 billion to support Florida schools.

Most current data on deaths (DeSantis is still hiding daily counts) averaging 227 deaths per day on Aug 23, excluding deaths by nonresidents who were staying in Florida. Those people and several other categories are no longer counted as "real deaths."

You gave a guess, I refuted it with medical data from the CDC.

Don’t be stubborn, it’s hindering your view of the truth.
