John 5:24 Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him
who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed
from death into life.

Is this statement are part of the "now is" of a Christian life, or a future reference?

(2) That all should honour the Son,

Definition

(timao = to prize, to revere, honour, value)
(akouo = to hear, understand)
(pisteuo = to have faith, put in trust in)

Example

John 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth My word, and believeth on Him that sent Me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

John 12:26 If any man serve Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there shall also My servant be: if any man serve Me, him will [my] Father honour.
Matthew 13:16 But blessed [are] your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear.

John 12:44-50 Jesus cried and said, He that believeth on Me, believeth not on Me, but on Him that sent Me. 48 He that rejecteth Me, and receiveth not My words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day. 49 For I have not spoken of Myself; but the Father which sent Me, He gave Me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak. 50 And I know that His Commandment is Life Everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto Me, so I speak.

Revelation 3:11 Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.

If believing in God is a "now is," then the passing from death to life is a "now is," seeing that the statement puts the transition from death to life as a PAST EVENT for the one believing.

1 John 5:1 "The one believing that Jesus is the Christ is born of God." "Is born" is a "now is" condition for the one believing, and is a condition of being IN LIFE, since it is talking about a born-again condition.

So, why are you asking this question? Have you encountered someone claiming that possession of eternal life is only a future event?

My position was that John 5:21-25 is essentially a more detailed description pertaining to the
statement in John 3:7, based on V. 25 using the expression "the hour is come, and now is". These
verses to me clearly are in contrast to V. 29 & 30, the future resurrection and judgment.
The other member disagreed without really offering an alternative understanding of Vvs. 21-25.

Before a Christian is born again, he or she is spiritually dead in trespasses and sins. When we are quickened by the Holy Spirit, i.e., born again, our Spirit is brought to life by the indwelling Holy Spirit, life that is eternal. We are living our eternal lives now, but in our physical bodies, and when our physical dies, we will experience a seamless transition into Spirit beings and go on living eternally. Then, on a day and hour that no one knows, we we will be given our eternal glorified bodies. Hallelujah.

The way I read that passage is that Jesus is talking about spiritual life and regeneration in v. 24. The reason why it is stated in the context of resurrection is to assure believers that resurrection to life will certainly occur to them. To the one believing in Christ, resurrection is as good as done, even though it is a future event. I come to this conclusion because the apostles declare elsewhere that the believer already has eternal life in the here and now (ref. 1 Jn. 5:12-13).

It refers to the person’s current status since Jesus and Paul made it clear that true believers can fall away in John 15:1-7 and 2 Timothy 2:12.

The way I read that passage is that Jesus is talking about spiritual life and regeneration in v. 24.
How can John 3:3-10 narrative to Nicodemus pertain to regeneration?
12 If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe
if I tell you heavenly things?

Jesus states that what I have told you is "earthly matters". Regeneration is heavenly matters.
13 No one has ascended to heaven but He who came down from heaven,
that is, the Son of Man who is in heaven.

Regeneration will not be possible until the Son of Man has ascended. But first, He must be
"lifted up from the earth."

14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up,
15 that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.
Consider when the word is actually used. (Not in John 3 by the way)
Matthew 19:28 So Jesus said to them, Assuredly I say to you, that in the regeneration(palingenesia), when the Son of Man sits on the throne of His glory, you who have followed Me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
Regeneration when? After He is seated on the throne of His Glory.
John 7:
38 He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow
rivers of living water.

39 But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive;
for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

When does regeneration become possible? After the Spirit is given.
Titus 3:5 not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration(palingenesia) and renewing of the Holy Spirit.

Therefore I suggested that John 5:24, 25 could reference regeneration because He speaks of future
events, both near to come, and the end of the age. Yes, verse 25 could be a direct reference to those
who Jesus literally brought back from death. But verse 24 suggests passing from death to life in
receiving the new birth and at least a parallel to "you must be born again".
Regeneration is the work of the Holy Spirit, and is not the same as being
born again in believing.
I was told twice that I was putting the cart before the horse. If you are going to discuss
"you must be born again", and call that regeneration, that is quite the case.
Regeneration is in the abiding Holy Spirit.
Born again believers all have access, to pass from death to life, to receive from above this eternal life. To be renewed in the spirit of your mind. Not all abide, not all bear fruit.
I will gladly acknowledge that John 5 making reference to regeneration is not a certainty,
even as I am certain that John 3:3-10 has nothing to do with regeneration. Yes, you must be born again in believing. Regeneration is in receiving from heaven by the Holy Spirit.

This verse really rattled me today:
John 4:14 but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water
that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.

Can this be anything other than the boundless love of God for the world? I felt like one of those
fountains at a city park where you can barely get a sip. I had to go read 1 Corinthians 13 again
and pray awhile. What kind of fountain might I be?

Now I see what the problem is. I do not agree with you that being born again and regeneration are different events. Regeneration by nature of the term means spiritual rebirth. It is what is described in Eph. 2:5. There was never any writer I read (in any denomination) mentioning regeneration that implied a distinction between it and the "born again" experience. The point is that the majority of theologians assume it's the same thing.

The verse you quoted (Titus 3:5) says "and renewing of the Holy Spirit." The way I read this is that regeneration is being born again, and renewing of the Holy Spirit is the ongoing work of sanctifying our way of life. Jesus came to save us from our sins, which doesn't happen instantaneously. But receiving the Spirit at spiritual rebirth is a past event for all believers.

Yes, The work of regeneration by the Holy Spirit extends beyond our personal born again experience and even our transformation by the renewing of our minds. The everlasting life of the Holy Spirit is
in the giving of life to the world.

John 4:14 Whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst.
But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up
into everlasting life.

Lord, make us an overflowing fountain by which everlasting life may be "shed abroad", giving life
to others in a dry and thirsty world. Romans 5:5

Regeneration takes place when Life extends beyond our believing. Our faith awakens our spirit to
receive from above. When we begin to receive spiritual gifts that give life to the world, that is the
real power of regeneration. Jesus was very clear in His discussion with Nicodemus:

John 3:12 If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if
I tell you heavenly things?

To be spiritually reborn is an earthly activity. Judges and Kings throughout the narrative of the Bible
brought about great revivals, which rarely lasted more than one generation. That is because there was
no power of regeneration to sustain the move of God. The Holy Spirit IS the power of regeneration,
IS the heavenly power.
Abiding in the Holy Spirit enables us to sustain the revival of the spirit. That is the power of regeneration, NOT the born again experience. That is the difference between the Old and New Testament experience. That is the difference between "heavenly and earthly things".
The word regeneration is not operative until after the Spirit is given.

John 7:
38
He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow
rivers of living water.***

39 But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive;
for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

John 4:14
***whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst.
But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing
up into everlasting life.

This is the regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit.
Born again from above is not regeneration, but does make this possible by the giving
of the Holy Spirit, and the abiding in that Spirit. The power is in the abiding.
Be blessed and remain blessed in the abiding.
James

Our paths diverge here, as your argument doesn't convince me. How can the Holy Spirit be in someone and not renew them? The Holy Spirit is not a dormant force. Regeneration is simply a different word describing a born again experience. Renewal simply means deeper living in Christ. At spiritual birth, we have life in Christ, and the Spirit continually renews us to that life.
