Ephesians 4:2 says how God has called us to relate with one another >

"with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love," (Ephesians 4:2)

And Jesus says "I am gentle and lowly in heart", in Matthew 11:29. I think it can be quite clear how God means for us to be lowly and gentle like Jesus. But this, I would say, could be quite clear, without God putting in "all".

So, why did God put in this little word? What do you have, from scholarship or your personal prayerful understanding, please? And I mean, for this forum, how can "all" help us to become more like Jesus and follow Him?

One thing I now think of > ones reading this scripture might suppose God means for them to get their own selves to act humble and gentle . . . maybe tone our voices more nicely.

But God says we need to relate with "all" gentleness and lowliness. So, this might wake up our attention to how real humility and gentleness are in Jesus . . . in God's love. So, this means better than how we might be able to control our own selves to act gentle and humble, at times . . . when we feel it suits our purpose.

This is in the sight of God, not only in our acting and toning our voices.

Lowliness and meekness refer to a persons attitude toward self. A person with a proper balance between professions and practice will be humble. will not be full of haughty pride. A truly humble individual will be in balance not thinking too highly of himself nor at the other extreme putting himself down. The third quality forbearance is a social virtue expressing the ability to be patient with the weaknesses of others people.

Verse 2 starts off with "with". He Paul is appealing to the Ephesians t o live lives worthy of the calling God had given them. Here worthy "axios" is an adverb of manner used with scales.. or bringing up the other beam of the scales:"

Ephesians 4:2 (New International Version)
Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.

The NIV might be a better translation for Ephesians 4:2

Ephesians 4:2-6
2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another in love,
3 being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling;
5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism,
6 one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all.

Galatians 5:22-23
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

2 Corinthians 3:18
18 But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit.

All lowliness and gentleness is found, not in ourselves, but in the Holy Spirit dwelling within us. And He fills us with himself, with who he is - gentle, faithful, good, loving, etc - as we yield, submit, surrender ourselves to him, occupying our minds with the glory of the Lord, and living by faith in the truth of who we are in Christ. (Romans 6:13-22; Romans 8:14; Romans 12:1; James 4:7; 1 Peter 5:6; Hebrews 12:2-3; 2 Corinthians 5:7) We only live with all humility and gentleness, then, as the Spirit is in full control of us.
