No, the Bible does not tell us, in so many words, to practice self-care. But taking care of yourself is assumed, a given. The Bible says to “love your neighbor as you love yourself”.

It is a given that we will take care of ourselves, that we do treat ourselves with love and consideration. There is a really good Biblical basis for practicing self-care that I hope to post in this thread and help you see that He is really with you. He has always been there by your side, seeking your love and care. If only you listen to that gentle voice and He will change your whole world for the better. For He who lives in you is greater than the one who is in the world.

But Christian self-care isn't the same as you find in the rest of the world: manicures and spa days and expensive jewelry and fancy chocolate. It's more like soul-care, having that secret time with your Father in heaven, going on a vacation with Him, knowing the image of God that you carry with you than like buy-fancy-stuff-and-leave-me-alone-care. :)

How do you self-care? Do you know you can and must learn to love yourself? And, Yes, Love God FIRST and ALWAYS.

Both should grow together I think, is maybe the most healthy way to do it and keep it properly "balanced", etc, but it is actually love God first, etc, then from that, having the other two grow together I think, etc...

But yes, were supposed to love ourselves, because otherwise, how can you really ever truly love anyone else truly, etc...

Just does not and will not ever work at all, etc...

Not truly anyway, etc...

God Bless!

That's the part many more worldly people (or non-believers) seem to be missing, and wonder why they don't ever really have any true success at it, etc...?

Because I really don't believe you really can have any true success (with the other two) without having that, or this one, first, etc...

Oh, they can pretend, put on a good show, (some of them) (many of them, etc), but deep down I think they know it is just "not real or true", etc...

And I don't think it really ever will be until they have this first, etc...

And then, after that, like I said, having the other two "grow together" from that first, etc...

God Bless!

The key is to enjoy God’s love

The answer is to understand the depth of God's love, mercy, forgiveness, and grace. He demonstrated this love in the most powerful way possible when He sacrificed Jesus on the cross to die for our sins.

For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

But because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions — it is by grace you have been saved. Ephesians 2:4-5

When we understand God’s love, when we deeply know He loves us, we don’t need to focus on loving ourselves. The more we experience God’s forgiveness and love, the more we think of Him and the less we think about ourselves. When we are excited and secure in His love for us, we don’t need to try to find meaning by loving ourselves.

Great post!

I was out of the Christian faith for about, 7 years and came back 3 years ago. During those 7 years, I believed self-care was all about reading books, doing a face mask, making yourself food.

And as a Christian, I still think those are important. It's okay to do those things for self-care, but it is more important to spend time with your Father in heaven. That's the ultimate self-care that you should be doing before you do anything else. And heck, you can do it with God as well. Let me explain.

I do self-care by hanging out with Him just at my place. I put worship music on and I worship Him, I journal to Him, and then I read the Bible. Then I read a devotional book or maybe just a self-development book and I invite God alongside with me to do it.

If it was a really rough day, I force myself to make food. Because eating is also part of self-care. Even if it's toast and butter. You're eating when you don't feel like eating :)

Jesus is the only one that makes me feel better after self-care. Always.

Absolutely! Thanks for shining your light.

We can't even realize how to love ourselves unless we know Him and His love for us. Having Him in our everything is the best self-care one can do for themselves. He adds meaning to our everything and brings out the beauty from ashes.

Christian self-care is holistic. It encompasses the body, mind, heart, and soul. One doesn’t have primacy over the other. Each is a facet of the temple. Divine love is all-inclusive. It contains the whole. The inner and outer man.

The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”

We are visible manifestations of God’s love. What do they see when they see you? That’s the first thing they encounter.

Absolutely! May His glory shine through in our body, mind, heart, and soul. I exercise and eat healthily. I care for my skin, hair, and nails. I enjoy all things with Him. Everything I do in Him even as He delights in me. May we bear witness to the truth of His riches and abundant love in how we present our bodies and lives. :)

 Multitudes of people, Christians included, go through life feeling discouraged, depressed, and unlovable. Understandably, they desperately want to escape a negative self-image. Many people think the “cure” to a poor self-image is to learn to love yourself. God doesn’t want you to go through life saying, “I hate myself.” The alternative to loving yourself is not hating yourself. It is to fully grasp and enjoy God’s love for you.

We can't grasp the right idea of loving ourselves or others unless we receive the love of Christ. He first loved. When we receive that, we love Him. In that, we love ourselves and others because He loves and we are made in His image. It's His love reigning in and through us as we soak ourselves in Him and He washes us in His. It is not by our strength, but by His Spirit. It is not a self-centered kind of self-love.

When Jesus said to love your neighbor “as yourself,” He simply was emphasizing how important it is to love your neighbor, to be genuinely concerned for others’ welfare. Throughout the Bible, it is assumed that we love ourselves. Here’s how Paul put it:

After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church. Ephesians 5:29

The Bible actually warns against worldly kind of self-love in 2 Timothy 3:1-2. The answer is to understand the depth of God's love, mercy, forgiveness, and grace. He demonstrated this love in the most powerful way possible when He sacrificed Jesus on the cross to die for our sins.

The more we think of Him, the more we understand God’s love. We abide in that love and we let Him love us. We don’t need to focus on loving ourselves or try to find meaning by loving ourselves. The more we experience God’s love, the more we are excited and secure in His love for us.

Some people are their own worst critics and are at times downright mean to themselves. Don’t say anything about yourself that God would not say about you. You are fearfully and wonderfully made.

God calls you to stare at your shortcomings, and realize they are forgiven. They are not ignored, they are put on the Cross. And if He has carried them, you do NOT need to carry them anymore. Let go of your false guilt – that is just an idol that you might be worshiping. False humility is another form of pride – because you are paying attention to yourself and worshiping your false humility.

True humility is staring at God. This is God’s solution to our insecurity – that we find our identity in Him – forgiven and made whole. We can let go of the lies we have believed about ourselves. We find our worth in Him – not that we are so great, but that we are forgiven and loved. He considered you worth dying for, who are you to disagree with Him?

As you believe His love for you, your self-worth grows. It does not start with self-love but accepting God’s perfect and unending love for you. It is not based on your actions. His love is eternally secure.

This is something that is a daily struggle for me.

I have never liked myself. Ever. I do not speak kindly to myself. I do not treat myself very well. I hold myself to standards I seldom reach, and then I berate myself for my shortcomings.

I do the same to others.

I should not.
