What exactly IS it and does the LCMS believe in it?
The Tribulation Period is the last 7 years on earth before Jesus returns at His Second Coming.
Lutherans teach that our Lord Jesus Christ “will come again to judge the living and the dead” (Apostles’ Creed).
As Scripture teaches, Christ will come once at the end of time, not to "rapture” believers away from earth, nor to establish an earthly kingdom, nor to begin a thousand year reign on earth, but to separate the believers from the unbelievers (Matthew 25:32–33) and to give each of them their eternal reward or punishment.
On the Last Day, those who have rejected Christ, along with the devil and his evil angels, “will go away to eternal punishment” while those who trust in Christ and His forgiveness, life, and salvation will go “into eternal life” (Matthew 25:46).

But unlike some denominations, the LCMS a teaches that nobody knows when the end of the world will be.

Matthew16:33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in Me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

Matthew7:14 Because strait [is] the gate, and narrow [is] the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
thlibo = afflict, narrow, throng, suffer tribulation, trouble.

Revelation2:8 And unto the angel of the church in Smyrna write; These things saith the first and the last, which was dead, and is alive; 9 I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and [I know] the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but [are] the synagogue of Satan. 10 Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast [some] of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life. 11 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.

Matthew5:48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

Some religions teach the end is near.

The LCMS believes we have been in the end times since Jesus ascended. You are in the end times now. You will experience tribulation in your lifetime. Hence John 16:33

The Revelation does seem to indicate it will get really bad in the last few years before Jesus returns, but the LCMS doesn't treat tribulation the way most American Christians do. Evangelicals treat it as if it's a thing, an ontological category, some predetermined, predefined historical era sandwiched between the rapture and the second coming. If you want to see the silliness of these beliefs, try to sit through the Left Behind movies.

American Christianity focuses on the rapture, the tribulation, etc. WAY TOO MUCH. And it freaks people out. Maybe that's the case with you.

The Revelation was not given so people could obsess and Jerry Jenkins could sell books. It was meant to be a comfort. The short version of The Revelation is: Yeah, bad stuff happens. And, yeah, it may seem like things are getting worse. But God still loves you, God is still in control, and Christ is victorious. That's what you should focus on: Christ.

Read John 16:33 over and over again.

NO WAY am I watching the Left Behind movies. I used to volunteer in a nursing home and we had a library there. For a time I worked in the library and we had to get rid of some books to make room for new books. I got rid of all the Left Behind books and the next time I came to work, they were all back on the shelf. I took them down again, and the same thing happened. I figured I was doing the residents a favor, but apparently someone else thought SHE was doing them a favor by offering the books.

It's worth noting that the only reason that Revelation made it into the canon was that Christians back then who read it saw what it described happening all around them! They saw correctly that the end times it talked about started with the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem and continued on through their lives. This view doesn't allow using the book as some sort of road map to the future; it is a commentary on the entire span of history from the destruction of the Temple to the arrival of the One Who is greater than the Temple to be with us forever.
