It seems likely that he went to the border to investigate the spread of covid 19 among various issues related to the border crisis.

Given that COVID-19 infections are lower in Mexico than they are in the United States, it seems DeSantis once again is hunting snipes. The newspaper editorial is right; he's got a for-real emergency on his hands in Florida, one he brought on himself by ordering local governments to stop trying to protect their citizens.

Now, COVID-19 infections surge as a result, and he leaves the state to do some campaign photo ops. That's today's republican party.

It's not Ronald Reagan's party anymore.

The beginning of the article is about how DeSantis was at the border instead of in Florida trying ot get COVID-19 under control in is state.
It's true that this was mentioned, but barely. It was almost incidental to the whole editorial.

The writers were supposedly alarmed that he was out of the state anywhere and for any length of time, even a weekend, and that he told a few very ordinary jokes about Fauci.

From that we were told to conclude that he was giving up all efforts to combat the virus and was starting a campaign against Critical Race Theory and some sort of vendetta against Fauci. It's simply ridiculous.

It was apparently alarmed that he was out of the state anywhere and for any length of time,

Given that his orders against local governments trying to protect citizens, caused this latest surge, and given that he won't even acknowledge it, it's a real concern. Whether he doesn't care, or is just afraid to do the right thing for political reasons, it's a bad time to have weak governor in Florida.

Yeah same for NY Calf and other states huh.

Currently, new cases for:
New York 999
California 4570
Florida 8012

And DeSantis went AWOL to tend to his political ambitions while new cases continue to rise in Florida. They need a governor who can lead, not a early bird candidate for president.

Maybe talk to them also?

Maybe DeSantis can talk to them? He sure could use some help right now.

Gov. DeSantis is dong a great job!

Some think so...

BTW, while new infections continue to shoot up, the increase in deaths so far is very slight. Still less than 40 a day over the past week. Hopefully, advances in knowledge in dealing with severe COVID-19 illness will mean that a huge increase in deaths will not follow.

making fun of those he doesn't agree with.
This is my biggest gripe with such politicians. Rather than dealing with the substance and rationale of differences they get personal and insulting.

DeSantis and his entourage actually brought covid19 back to Florida after their little political theatrics. Florida, Missouri and Texas now compromise 40% of coronavirus cases in America today. And it seems that Florida AG brought the covid back to Florida. Unabashed silliness.

Deaths lag cases by several weeks. Hospitalizations are increasing, but moderately. In the current situation things tend to be hot in specific areas, not always whole states. Here’s a map showing that. Coronavirus in the U.S.: Latest Map and Case Count I don’t know at what point states should take precautions. The trade off between hospitalization and economic effects is a matter of judgement, as long as hospitals don’t fill, as in a few parts of Missouri.

I will say that in my part of NJ most people seem to be wearing masks indoors, even though in most cases there is no government mandate. Otherwise life seems close to normal. We tend to see it as a precaution that doesn’t have much of a downside. Maybe in Republican parts of the state it’s different. Our governor seems to be watching mostly hospitalizations, not case numbers. By that criterion Florida should be starting to get concerned, even if not quite doing anything yet.

In a few days, the DeSantis surge will exceed previous record levels in Florida:

He's still refusing to allow local governments to take steps to reduce the spread, even though his order to stop those steps caused this surge. He's now pushing vaccinations, but that may be too little, too late.
