But all Christians DO sin - none of us is 100% perfect in thought, word, deed or motive 24/7.

Exactly!

Did not Peter sin and Paul called him out on it? Wasn't Peter born again at that point?

I'm not saying sin like crazy, but the further we walk with Jesus, the less we will sin, but we will never stop sinning while on this earth.

That is why I am preaching now. The fact that they are still alive is a testimony to God's grace. But folks need to repent if they know the truth in how smoke kills themselves and others and they simply do not care to change. I believe some Native Americans who smoked were potentially saved back in the colonial days because they would not be aware of the medical knowledge we have today in that smoking kills. For they would be committing this sin in ignorance. But most people today do not have this luxury.

You still have to give them time though. God gave you as much time as you needed, did He not? If the God of all things gave you as much time as needed, why don't you, a human do the same?

While I think smoking is absolutely disgustong and if I had my way it would be banned outright worldwide with anyone suspected of smoking havnig breath tests and locked up in rehab for a couple of week to make sure they have had enough time to get over the addiction, I cant go along with a lot of the comments on here. Smoking is a sin, but so is being a glutton and too fat, so is the love of money, so is pride, so are many other things but a lot of Christians commit them as well.

Also nicotine is a very powerful neurotoxin. No one of any repute could claim its harmless.

If my health starts to become severely affected, then I'll just quit then, like my grandpa did at age 60, and lived to be 91, etc...

And your also ignoring the fact of how many people smoked filtered cigarettes all of their life and had no adverse side effects ever the whole entire time ever at all also, etc...

It's still a risk, but is not a 100% for sure automatic death sentence either, etc...

It's different for every individual, etc...

And I don't want to take the kinds of medications they would give me for my stress and/or anxiety either, etc...

Because in my mind, they are even worse, etc...

Anyway,

God Bless!

I believe if we do not eventually overcome grievous sin that God condemns in His Word with warnings of hellfire and condemnation we are not going to make it. To say that we will commit grievous sin (Mortal sin) again at some point in the future because we cannot help it is justifying sin and evil ahead of time. God cannot agree with our way of thinking in justifying grevious sin He condemns. Otherwise all the sins that God warns with warnings of hellfire and condemnation would be false scare tactics. See Matthew 5:28-30, Matthew 6:15, Matthew 12:37, Matthew 25:31-46, Luke 9:62, Galatians 5:19-21, 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, 1 John 3:10, 1 John 3:15, Revelation 21:8, etc.

While I commend you for condemning smoking and how it is a sin, I do not agree with your view on sin and salvation. Take for example the sin of pride that you mention. James 4:6 says God resists the proud and gives grace to the humble.

I don't believe confession alone with no change in one's life means one is truly confessing correctly. Is a man who cheats on his wife (with her knowing about) all of a sudden forgiven by her if the man just tells his wife that he is sorry all the time? I don't think so. She would take his words as being an empty profession in their faithfulness to marriage and see that he really does not care about her and love her by his actions. The same is true with God. For Jesus says if you love me, keep my commandments (John 14:15). Hebrews 12:14 says to follow after holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord. One is not following after holiness if they believe they will sin again as a matter of fact.

Take for example the story of Jonah. In Jonah chapter 3, the Ninevites were told by Jonah that in 40 days God was going to bring judgment upon them. the Ninevites did two very important things. They had cried out unto God (which is obviously seeking forgiveness over their sins), and they forsaken their evil ways. What is interesting is that when God had had seen that they forsaken their wicked ways, that is when He turned away from the judgment or wrath He was going to originally bring upon them. It was when they stopped sinning that they truly repented. Jesus says,

“The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because they repented at the preaching of Jonas;” (Matthew 12:41).

Think about it. To highlight 2 Timothy 3:1-9. It says in the last days perilous time will come and men shall be lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God. In highlighting what 2 Timothy 3:1-9 says. It also states that they will have a form of godliness but they will deny the power thereof. What power are they denying? The ability to live a godly life by God's power. For with man this impossibe, but with God all things are possible.

God is so much more forgiving and a human will ever be.

I still disagree with you.

But you know the truth that a woman who is thinking clearly will not stay with a man who is being unfaithful to him and all he is doing is paying lip service to her that he is sorry (When he is not really sorry because his actions prove he is not sorry). I say this because the Canaanite woman was able to expound upon Jesus' own parable. She was able to illustrate truth in the real world just like Jesus did.

I wanted to make it clear that I believe that smoking and an extreme moderate use of alcohol does not condemn if they do so in ignorance.

That's not what you said; you said smoking was a very serious sin in God's eyes.

And someone who has never smoked, never drunk, lived a healthy lifestyle full of good deeds, will still be condemned if they have refused to accept Jesus.

But these kinds of cases are rare and not the norm. Most know of the destructive nature of smoking and alcohol and they do not care about it's bad fruits and they simply partake of these drugs anyways despite the bad harm that they cause.

It doesn't matter at all what the bad fruits are or what harm is caused by smoking - if the person has accepted and trusted in Christ, they do not have eternal life.

Comparing smoking to food is a poor argument. First, they are both bad for you.

No, I said JUNK food. Food is actually good for you; it prevents starvation.
Heavily processed junk food, high in salt, sugar, fat and e numbers has been proved to have a link to heart disease, strokes and in some cases, cancer.

Second, smoking is not a requirement to live like food is required to live.

Heavily processed junk food is not a requirement to live.

I believe in Jesus's teaching on New Testament Non-Resistance.

But do you carry a gun?
Guns have one purpose; to fire bullets. Bullets kill people, which is a tad more serious than blowing cigarette smoke in their face.

It's a piecing together of various different verses and not just one verse alone.

The trouble is that "piecing together various verses" often means "taking verses out of context to make a doctrine"
The Bible is not, and never was, meant to be sliced up; but read as a whole.

The Bible’s teaching that serious sin is separation from GOD,

We are separated from God because of our sin, yes; which is serious.
The only way for that sin to be forgiven so that we are reconciled to God is through Jesus. So refusing to accept Jesus is refusing the only way to be forgiven and have eternal life.
If someone does not have eternal life when they die, they are not saved - which is what I said.

It is obvious that smoking is not loving yourself or your brother which are grevious sins in God's sight.

But if a person dies without having accepted, and trusted in, Jesus, that is the most serious sin of all.
The other sins almost don't matter - against the sin of rejecting God.

Alternately, if someone has received Jesus and has eternal life, they will not be condemned because they are smokers.

It's obvious that smoking is slow murder. Most unbelievers know that smoking takes years off their life and it can lead to many health problems. This is a harmful substance and it is not a requirement for you to live. It is a sin. It will lead people to hell.

Rejecting Jesus with no repentance will always, 100% result in a non believer going to hell.

ALL of Jesus' words have to be taken into account here. To believe in Jesus is to do more than just believe in the person of Jesus for salvation but it is to believe in everything He taught, said, and did, too.

I know that - and he taught that there is no eternal life or way to the Father without him.

Hence, rejecting Jesus and his words is more serious than smoking.

I'm out for a while, you guys take back over OK, @Bible Highlighter is probably just going to flood this thread until our posts are buried anyway, so he can forget about his shame a little while back, etc, not repent, etc, and he also feeds off of all of this attention also, etc, and I also just have to really wonder what kind of grievous sin he would fall into if they took away his ability to post on the internet, etc...?

God forbid, etc...

Anyway, you guys have it back for awhile.

God Bless!

Doesn't seem like he is even trying, etc...

Mercy triumphs over judgement, and/or the law, etc...

He who deals out his judgement without Mercy, will receive his judgement without Mercy...

Mercy triumphs over judgement...

God Bless!

Again, one bad thing does not undo another bad thing. Smoking causes your lungs to be black and causes all kinds of other serious health issues. This is not in any way close to the problems of various different foods. Although we should also eat healthy and not over eat, too. Also, smoking is not a requirement to live like food. Many people eat things without realizing the harmful side effects of it. But smoking is pretty obvious to most people that it is really really bad. People can see smokers coughing like they are dying. In truth to be told.... they are dying... but very slowly.

So you have no issue with junk food, it’s not a sin to knowingly and choose to eat junk food? Knowing the fat food can clog up artery’s cause heart attacks all kinds of diseases

It's not about one bad thing undoing another. It's a matter of consistency. If smoking will send you to hell, then so will eating Big Macs.

I am quoting again the snippet from Pastor Cooper Adam's article, “Is Smoking a Sin?”

“...I am not a stranger to the effects of smoking. My sister Lelia died a horrible death over a three year period at 47 years old from lung cancer the doctors said was caused by cigarettes. My father also died from emphysema partly caused by smoking after years using cigarettes and cigars. My grandmother died at 76 smoking at least a pack of Lucky Strikes a day and had a terrible hacking cough. Clearly smoking shorten her life. They all knew that smoking was harmful and several times when I tried to urge them to quit because I was concerned for their health, they became angry and offended, telling me to mind my own business. For twenty years I do not remember any time I did not see my dad without a cigar in his mouth or in his hand. My sister smoked constantly lighting one cigarette with another. All died untimely deaths and I miss them and believe they would still be here if they had not smoked. Both my two younger brothers are presently smokers and I know they are headed for the same fate. (2005 update....one brother has quit!)

Over the years as a pastor I have been by the bed side of many people who were dying as a result of smoking and I have conducted many of their funerals. I have watched people whose lungs were so badly damaged they could not live without oxygen, remove the oxygen tube, coughing and gasping for breath light a cigarette and smoke it between their rasping coughs. I have seen the horrible pain caused as tobacco caused cancer in its final stages as it ate through the bodies of people coming through the skin.

I have seen the doctors increase the doses of morpheme until it had little or no effect on their pain. I have watched the pain of smokers having ugly fits of coughing and yet in a few minutes later light another cigarette. I actually have seen people put a cigarette to their trichotomy because tobacco caused cancer had destroyed their throats and they could no longer breath through their mouth or nose. It is no fun to watch someone dying from cancer or heart disease when you know was totally preventable and was caused by their addiction to cigarettes. When I see a young or a middle age person smoking I see their future and it concerns me deeply to know what probably lies ahead for them. Tobacco is a slow but merciless killer that first debilitates its victim and them methodically destroys their lives all the while giving their prey a murderous pleasure.

I have also watched professing Christians living spiritually defeated lives because of smoking. They knew it was wrong and because they could not overcome it they were affected spiritually. I have seen them as they tried to justify their sin gradually develop a rebellious spirit. I have seen it destroy people's faith in God because they were controlled by their addiction and could not seem to overcome it. I have seen professing Christian farmers who made most of their income by raising tobacco lie to themselves and to other claiming there was nothing wrong with smoking. In all my years as a pastor I have never seen any spiritually strong or mature Christian who smoked.”

Source:
Is Smoking a Sin?

Please keep in mind that I do not agree with this Pastor's view of sin and salvation, but he makes a great point in that smoking is a sin, and how it destroys lives and how we must condemn it as believers. Let the reader understand.

Where's the part where Cooper Abrams says smoking will send you to Hell?
