I don't know if I'll ever read Victor Hugo's book, maybe someday, but I'd be interested in watching some screen adaption of the novel. However after checking I see there are over half a dozen big screen versions, as well as some made for TV versions. Has anyone read the book and seen more than one, and could recommend one as being a faithful adaptation?

Thanks.

:)

I read the book years ago but I only recall seeing the latest musical, movie version.

The website below has reviews of ten screen versions of Les Mis starting with the 1934 film and ending at the 2012 musical version. The reviewer prefers the 1934 version along with a six hour adaptation produced for French television in 2000:

I enjoyed the 1998 version. Les Misérables (1998) - IMDb

Be aware that the most recent version of Les Miserables (the one that's part musical) is very graphic at times. Definitely not suited for younger audiences.

The only one I've seen is the one w/ Hugh Jackman. Some of the reviews trash a couple of the performances in this version, but I liked it. I still get a couple of the songs stuck in my head.

I thought they were all musicals.

The most recent one? Is that the one w/ Hugh Jackman? I don't remember anything graphic in it????
