Why I believe smoking is a serious sin in God's eyes:

#1. It defiles your own temple (Which is the temple of God):

“What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20).

“Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.” (1 Corinthians 3:16-17).

Smoking only defiles our temples and it will to God destroying us.​

#2. Smoking is not loving your neighbor.

We all know second hand smoke kills, and yet one of the big principles of being a follower of Christ is to love others (i.e. to love your neighbor).

We know that by not loving others it only leads to our own condemnation.

“And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? He said unto him, What is written in the law? how readest thou? And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself. And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live.” (Luke 10:25-28).

“Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not. Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee? Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me. And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.” (Matthew 25:41-46).

“In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.” (1 John 3:10).

Imagine smoking around your brother knowing that your second hand smoke is killing him. Is this not hating one's brother because you are killing him?

“Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.” (1 John 3:15).

So in conclusion:

Smoking is a sin that not only defiles our temples whereby God will destroy us for it, but it also not loving towards our neighbor (Whereby it can condemn ourselves). So my encouragement to anyone out there who smokes to please stop and ask God for help if you need to stop.

Things happen in life, God isn't stupid. Some people need time, not remarks about how they deserve to go to hell. Like I said you make more enemies then converts.

I am not denying the possibility of salvation by the ignorance of some. I believe it may be possible for Indians in the colonial days who got saved by Christ most likely did not know that second hand smoke kills thus as a result, they may have been potentially saved because they sinned in ignorance (not knowing it was a sin). Also, the same truth can be applied to tribes people who may smoke and do not know about how smoking kills, too. In these cases, they simply do not know. I believe one is clearly condemned if they know that what they do harms others and themselves and they keep doing it anyways.

As for converts of the truth: I am not trying to win a popularity contest or grow numbers to boast in myself. Any growth is a result of the Lord and all praise and glory should be given to Him for such things. I am only interested in what the truth of God's Word says and in following it. Jesus says, “Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.” (Matthew 7:14). Jesus says, “Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able.” (Luke 13:24). My guess is you don't even know about striving to enter the straight gate because your belief does not allow you to see such a verse. But beware of the converts of those who believe they can sin and still be saved because they have a belief alone in Jesus. It will only lead to those who will justify sin even worse. For Jesus warned of the Pharisees, “Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.” (Matthew 23:15).

I also believe God can give some people time and space to put smoking out of their lives. But are they saved while they continue to kill others? I would say not. They need to repent of sin in order to be saved. One cannot continue to be an axe murderer and still be saved.

But yes. The fact that God keeps them alive is an example of His mercy and grace for them to repent of their sin of smoking if they are still holding on to such a sin that kills others (with them knowing it kills others).

You are making this way bigger than it needs to be.Whenever God gives you power to condemn and kill every smoker then everyone's going to know God is as offended as you are by smoking.

You are making this way bigger than it needs to be.Whenever God gives you power to condemn and kill every smoker then everyone's going to know God is as offended as you are by smoking.

It's not my personal opinion but it is following the logical conclusion based on believing certain verses in your own Bible. Two simple question:

#1. Can a person hate their brother and have eternal life?
#2. Are you loving your brother or hating him if you know your second hand smoke kills him?

You know there are better ways To Love your neighbor who smokes also, by talking with him or her about it in a manner that alleviates the cause or problem of why they smoke.

Yes, smoking is sinful because it destroys yourself and others. Very rarely do people make efforts to not smoke around others. Many times they have no choice but to do so because of their addiction. Smoking is also highly addictive and it hard to stop. This shows the evil nature of smoking. Just look at it's fruits. It's all bad.

Considering the numerous sins the Bible explicitly describes(of which no one is innocent), I find it interesting to hear your rationalization coming up with new sins not listed in the Scripture. If you are looking for some sin to call out, here are some explicitly mentioned:

Galatians 5:19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

1 Corinthians 6:9 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Perhaps you have forgotten that eating meat is also bad for your health and potentially causes cancer.

If you eat that hamburger in front of someone who thinks it is a sin to eat meat, are you sinning against Christ?

What if we call out sins like the works of the flesh listed in Galatians 5 instead of coming up with new specks to pull out of our brothers' eyes?

Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?(Matthew 7:1-3)

As such, this kind of moral nitpicking has nothing to do with sin; but everything to do with meaningless moralistic rhetoric. This is the fruit of the false teaching run amuck, this is the fake piety and false righteousness of Pietism.

You implied that nobody is innocent in regards to doing these kinds of sins (or at least some of them).

First, if you were to read Galatians 5:19-21 more closely, you would discover that those which do such sins will not inherit the kingdom of God (see verse 21). To “not inherit the Kingdom” is a “loss of salvation” because we read in Matthew 25:31-46 in the sheep and goats judgment that “inheriting the kingdom” by helping the poor is contrasted with being cast into everlasting punishment for those who did not help the poor. Some may argue that Matthew 25:31-46 is only referring to the judgment of nations but this same truth is taught in Luke 10:25-37.

Second, Galatians 5:24 says that they that are Christ's have crucified the affections and lusts.
Paul also says in 2 Corinthians 7:1 let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit perfecting holiness in the fear of God. So your claim is not true to what the apostle actually says.

Jesus expanded upon the sins of adultery with saying that if one looks upon a woman in lust, they have committed adultery in their heart and they are in danger of hellfire (See: Matthew 5:28-30). But I am not adding anything new to Scripture, but I am merely making logical conclusions based on what God's Word says.

12 All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.

While Modern Translations can have errors or problems, sometimes they can be helpful in clarifying what the KJB says.

“You say, “I am allowed to do anything”—but not everything is good for you. And even though “I am allowed to do anything,” I must not become a slave to anything.” (1 Corinthians 6:12) (NLT).

“Some of you say, "We can do anything we want to." But I tell you not everything is good for us. So I refuse to let anything have power over me. ” (1 Corinthians 6:12) (CEV).

1 Corinthians 6:12 cannot possibly mean you can sin and still be saved because Paul says prior the following words:

“Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.” (1 Corinthians 6:9-10).

So Paul was quoting a popular saying among the Corinthians at that time in 1 Corinthians 6:12. For if you were to read the context of the chapter and the book itself, Paul is not defending the idea at all of how you can sin and still be saved.

This is one of my all time favorite verses that many in your camp seem to ignore.
What is the light? It is God (1 John 1:5).
What is walking in the light mean? According to the indirect wording used in 1 John 2:9-11, it means to love your brother. This truth is confirmed in 1 John 3:10 in that we can know if a person is of God if they love their brother or do righteousness.
So one has to love their brother (Walk in the light) in order for the blood of Jesus Christ to continue to cleanse a believer of all sin.

If you eat that hamburger in front of someone who thinks it is a sin to eat meat, are you sinning against Christ?

The minor potential effects of eating meat is not the same as smoking or in breathing in second hand smoke by others.

That would be good to bring out these other sins in Galatians 5:19-21. All Scripture is profitable for instruction in righteosness, right? (See: 2 Timothy 3:16-17). But you are probably not aware that we are in the last days now whereby many have a form of godliness but they deny the power thereof and that they are lovers of pleasure more than they are lovers of God (2 Timothy 3:1-9).

This is dealing with hypocritical judgment in that a believer may condemn another for the very same thing that they do. But if you were to keep reading in this chapter, I am sure it will disturb you greatly if you were to truly read it plainly and believe it (without seeking to change what it says). See Matthew 7:21 and compare with 1 Thessalonians 4:3. See Matthew 7:26-27 and compare with Matthew 13:41-42 and John 12:48.

This again sounds like an evasion of the truth. Again that does not answer my simple questions that I asked you. If truth was on your side, then you should be able to answer these questions with no problems. Anyways, the ball is still in your court in answering these questions.

Why I believe smoking is a serious sin in God's eyes:

#1. It defiles your own temple (Which is the temple of God):

“What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20).

“Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.” (1 Corinthians 3:16-17).

Smoking only defiles our temples and it will to God destroying us.​

#2. Smoking is not loving your neighbor.

We all know second hand smoke kills, and yet one of the big principles of being a follower of Christ is to love others (i.e. to love your neighbor).

We know that by not loving others it only leads to our own condemnation.

“And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? He said unto him, What is written in the law? how readest thou? And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself. And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live.” (Luke 10:25-28).

“Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not. Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee? Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me. And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.” (Matthew 25:41-46).

“In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.” (1 John 3:10).

Imagine smoking around your brother knowing that your second hand smoke is killing him. Is this not hating one's brother because you are killing him?

“Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.” (1 John 3:15).

So in conclusion:

Smoking is a sin that not only defiles our temples whereby God will destroy us for it, but it also not loving towards our neighbor (Whereby it can condemn ourselves). So my encouragement to anyone out there who smokes to please stop and ask God for help if you need to stop.

Using your rationale would render all manner of otherwise mundane activities as evil. Driving cars, drinking coffee, eating too many carbs, drinking sugary drinks.

The very electricity that your computer is running has, depending on where you live, a good chance of being powered by coal-burning plants that are literally poisoning the air and causing global warming resulting in loss of life and destruction to the whole planet.

As such, this kind of moral nitpicking has nothing to do with sin; but everything to do with meaningless moralistic rhetoric. This is the fruit of the false teaching run amuck, this is the fake piety and false righteousness of Pietism.

As for sugar and carbs: Yes, they can kill an individual, too. Granted, it does not usually kill your neighbor, though (Unless you want to shorten life to prevent in spreading the gospel and in loving others for Christ). But second hand smoke actually kills other people badly and not just yourself. It is more destructive than sugar and carbs (even though they are very bad, too). That is why I am for KETO (+ having lots of high fiber in my diet like avocados, salads, etc.), and I stay away from sugar.

Just saying so does not make it true. You actually have to point out how your interpretation is the correct one.
