There have been countless books written by men and women of God. Whether or not
they were written under the anointing of the Holy Spirit is really the issue. You may
read a book one of these days that speaks directly into your situation, and know that
it was all God that a brother or sister handed it to you.

The fact remains, God is still speaking, and if you had a meaningful encounter with God by way of a book, or devotional, that is for you to decide where to place that in your
walk of faith. What that means is that a book or devotional can become an idol.
The first time I
read My Utmost For His Highest, I was blown away. God spoke to me early
and often in the reading of that devotional. I kept reading it for years until I decided it had become a habit, and let it go.
When the Spirit of the Lord is at work, then the truth spoken by the angel Gabriel to Mary
lives on:

"With God, no word is without power".
I remember back in 2000, author Bruce Wilkerson published a little book based on the simplest of scriptures:
1 Chronicles 4:10 And Jabez called on the God of Israel saying, Oh, that You would bless me
indeed, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain!” So God granted him what he requested.
The Prayer of Jabez transformed the prayer lives of millions, from a book that cost less
than a graphic novel from a comic book store.
The time we are living in, and the effects of Christian publishing is a form of scriptural prophetic fulfillment.
Ecclesiastes 12:
9
And moreover, because the Preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge;
yes, he pondered and sought out and set in order many proverbs.
10 The Preacher sought to find acceptable words; and what was written was upright—
words of truth.
11 The words of the wise are like goads, and the words of scholars are like well-driven
nails, given by one Shepherd.
12 And further, my son, be admonished by these. Of making many books there is
no end, and much study is wearisome to the flesh.
13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter:
Fear God and keep His commandments,
For this is man’s all.
14 For God will bring every work into judgment,
Including every secret thing,

I would like to take a second to point out how crocodile hunter, the discovery channel, TLC and the history channel all make learning fun.

There is a lot of fun science and learning content on the internet.

...

Old testament ecclesiastes states that he who increases knowledge increases suffering.

While new testament Jesus says the truth (knowledge?) will set you free.

There is also Hosea 4:6 "My people perish for lack of knowledge."

Contrast between the two perspectives could make for a good discussion/debate.

Yes, there is much in the world we have to enjoy. As to knowledge vs. truth....
"Knowledge puffs people up (makes them proud), but love builds people up. 1 Corinthians 8:1
The truth Christ speaks of is by experiencing the Holy Spirit.

Ephesians 4:15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ.
John 16:13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth;
for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will
tell you things to come.

John 8:
31
Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, If you abide in My word, you are
My disciples indeed.

32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

Knowledge can be both freedom and limitation.

When I use medical knowledge to help heal, this is freedom (from suffering).

When I don't really lend a listening ear to someone talking about medicine because I think I know better secondary to medical knowledge I have learned in the past, then that same knowledge becomes my limitation.

St John of the Cross wrote about this in The Spiritual Canticle.

St. John of the Cross: Spiritual Canticle of the Soul and the Bridegroom Christ - Christian Classics Ethereal Library

He describes the soul who comes to the point in their spiritual journey, where nothing other than God(the Beloved) can satisfy the longing for union the soul has.

Essentially as we grow spiritually, eventually no reading or nice homilies and wonderful preachers will satisfy the deep longing in the soul. As we pray, send me no more messengers as they can't feed my soul anymore. All that I desire is you my beloved Christ.

Agreed. Reading is only one of the ways via which one might seek... but if I am locking myself up in my home, not participating in society, and spending all of my time reading holy scriptures and praying, I doubt that this will be best for my spiritual growth as a human being.

We must seek not just in words and prayers, but also generally in everyday life and through everyday actions.

St John's Canticle isn't suggesting that we stay in our homes and just read the Scripture and books. Just the opposite. Christ will be seen in everyone and everything after we've encountered Him dwelling within.

In other words, Contemplation will come with our spiritual union with Christ.

Agreed. Did not meant to suggest that's what they meant... was just expressing thoughts.
