Has no one here used a unisex shower or bathroom? I did in college and if college students can do it without incident, I'm sure the rest of humanity will survive.

Are you female? Do you fear for your bodily safety in such places? Do you honestly think men in such places would not be looking at you?

Male, the women had no problems with it. No one bothered them. It was a college, you didn't have to go to a bathroom to find women. I can't say all the bathrooms had no problems, but our certainly didn't.

Gendered bathrooms are only 100 (or so) years old.

Yeah that's because they were single outhouses. Only one person at a time. Women and men didn't go at the same time. Kinda like the single unisex bathrooms we are now.

Why would you bring this up when you know this?

99% of the stores I go into still have a men's and women's restroom... I don't think that's the crux of the argument.

I think argument is over whether or not transgender people can use the facilities they more closely identify with, correct?

Many conservatives have made this their "hill to die on" so-to-speak.

I don't think they've thought through the alternative.

Here's the example I've provided before.

This is a transgender man (born female, but then transitioned) named Shawn Stinson.

Based on the law that they want, Shawn has to the use the facilities associated to the sex they were at birth (female)

The same people who are angry at idea Shawn going into the men's room to urinate, would be the exact same people who would promptly call the cops if they saw Shawn walk into the women's bathroom while their wife or daughter were in there...guaranteed.

...and I guess, based on the rules they claim they want, it looks like the recently crowned Miss Nevada (transgender woman) is going to be showering with their sons at the local rec center.

850498453dc72b4f4f06b776689c0359

...something tells me they'd have a problem with that too...just a hunch.

So, if we're keeping score.
They'd be mad if a trans woman used the women's facilities
They'd be mad if a trans woman used the men's facilities
They don't want gender neutral facilities

Not leaving a whole lot of options for people here are they...

Why don't transgenders just use the single use bathrooms? No one had a problem with that. What about trans who who still looks like the opposite sex?

I don't think any one would object to a trans person who looks like and had the parts of the sex they want to be. The objection is to trans people who still look like a man or a woman and hadn't undergone the change using the bathroom of the sex the want to be.

Not true - in Rome they had large public toilets that accommodated hundreds at a time

When you say unisex showers do you mean showers where men and women actually showered with each other in the same shower so they could see each other naked? Were they dressing together where they could see each other naked?

I once used a coed shower/bathroom in Montreal at Université de Montréal. I was visiting from my college with friends and we stayed there a week. This was probably 1990-ish.

The one I used at Université de Montréal, the showers were stalls with little dressing areas in front but you could walk by and see someone dressing or undressing (and I did!). And this was 3 decades ago.

The BBC has a TREMENDOUS series on the history of the toilet! I've had a heck of a time trying to find it on youtube again.

This idea that bathrooms have always been gendered is silly. Bathrooms, throughout history have rarely been gendered. Perhaps one should ask:

Why are places where humans leave waste products catagorized by the method by which their waste escapes them?

Those ancient Roman baths and public toilets were gendered. Jewish public baths up through 70AD were also gendered.

The discriminating factor is whether or not a facility accommodated multiple people simultaneously.

A) Not every place has them. Some places like malls and certain stores have them, but there's more places that don't

B) Who gets to decide what the "cut-off" is in terms of "looking close enough like the target gender"? What about the people, who despite going through years of hormone intervention and multiple surgeries, never quite get to that status of "easily passing as that gender"?

Some people are lucky enough (like the examples I posted) to be be able to pull it off and nobody would know. Others (like Caitlyn Jenner) can afford the best surgeons and all of the hormones money can buy, and still can't fully get to a point where "nobody can tell".

As I've touched on in other threads, this is one of those tricky subjects where there's not an easy answer for it... apart from just having gender-neutral facilities across the board for everything and scrapping the gendered facilities.

You realize women don't want gender-neutral facilities because women's restrooms fill a larger purpose than waste elimination.

That would explain the couches...why don't we get a couch?

(start at the 1-minute mark lol)

Plenty of people on here (over the years I have been reading this subject) have stated they do not care what the person looks like, they should "use the restroom of the birth sex". Peruse this thread and you will likely find one.

Then I think it would be a good idea to have them. A good compromise imo.

Yeah, then fathers can actually go out with their special needs daughters in public alone without being called a pervert. Wouldn't that be nice?
