Lifting the embargo will not change the lives of the people of Cuba, the government does not care about them - they control distribution - but it would indeed enrich the politicians.

As for China setting up military bases - yeah, how did that work for Russia?

And evidently BLM doesn't know this.

How do we know lifting the embargo won’t cause a change? It’s been in place 60 years. You’re guessing. I have decades of evidence that shows keeping the embargo won’t cause Cuba to change. What do you have?

While the Soviet Union ultimately lost, it was still a smart move and not one I would like repeated.

Common sense. If they will not end human rights abuses under pressure, why on earth would they do so when there is freedom to do as they please.

The joke writes itself here.

Sometimes the carrot works better than the stick.

Besides, there's plenty of Communist propaganda that they must be protected from "Western decadence" -- if that's what they're afraid of, let's give it to them... in abundance.

A half century of practical demonstration in the real world has failed. Common sense is something people use who have no actual way to back up what they said. You have offered up nothing but a guess.

Give the Cuban people a little freedom, not cause the United States to be seen as a villain to the people of Cuba and give us a little more persuadable position in pushing for reforms for the Cuban people. Right now, short of a military invasion, we have done all we can do and it hasn’t worked. New tactics are needed.

Best factual, informed, intelligent reply yet! So much better than an informed conversation.

Says the guy who argued over and over that vaccine education outreach efforts would violate HIPAA rules.

Except that the blm quote was nothing more than a call for the US to end their embargo.

eh… It wasn’t “nothing more” than that. While it may have been primarily an attack on US policy, the wording certainly gave tacit approval/blessing to the Cuban government. It can be true that both US policy and Cuban policy hurt the Cuban people.

As do you, unless you have some type of promise formal statement says NT they are willing to change.
Do you?

It is not the US curtailing their freedom. That is self evident in their words and actions which are solely focused on the Communist oppressors.

I see a foreign policy that has over a half of century failed to achieve its goal. I’m open to other suggestions on what to do to help the Cuban people, but it has long since been time for the US to do something different because pummeling them with this embargo for decades has failed to get them to change and has given the Cuban government ample material to spread anti-American propaganda to the Cuban people. I don’t have the right answer but I know your answer is wrong.

It is not the US curtailing their freedom. That is self evident in their words and actions which are solely focused on the Communist oppressors.

They can’t visit relatives here because there are no travel options from Cuba to the United States. It’s a tropical island very close to the United States, I was planning a vacation there until Trump shut it down. Spend money on goods and services from the Cuban people. The US government is stopping that. Not Cuba.

What has the US embargo of Cubs actually achieved in its 60 years of existence?

China’s Communist Party has a history of abuse, murder, and deprivation and the US doesn’t put the same sanctions on them. Why not?

Because we get things from China that we like. China is willing to abuse humans to an extent that we get to enjoy $1 tube socks at the local stores! My favorite is Hobby Lobby who insists their "Christianity" be taken seriously while they get hauled into court for lying (false advertising in NY) AND they get a huge amount of their goods from Communist China! Why? NOT because Communist China values the holy word of Christ but rather just the opposite.

In reality the thing America values is the worship of Mammon. We are nation whose money SHOULD say
"In Mammon We Trust".

Cuba was once our playground and so long as the Mafia kept things groovin' in Cuba we were happy to see Batista do whatever he wanted to do.

Now we are faced with a completely DIFFERENT dictator who ISN'T our choice. Sad for America and if America isn't happy ain't no one gonna be happy.

The only thing the continuation of this embargo will achieve is give China a place to set up military bases less than 100 miles from US mainland if the US ever enters a Cold War with China.

America will have a new reckoning when China decides to flex. I don't look forward to that but we have made our bed and in it we will soon be lain.

I see a foreign policy that has over a half of century failed to achieve its goal.

It's ORIGINAL goal, no doubt. To oust Castro was our original goal. Now it seems more like the goal is to simply keep the pain going.

I’m open to other suggestions on what to do to help the Cuban people,

America doesn't roll that way. If at first you don't succeed keep hammering away the same way, maybe one day you will!

They can’t visit relatives here because there are no travel options from Cuba to the United States. It’s a tropical island very close to the United States, I was planning a vacation there until Trump shut it down. Spend money on goods and services from the Cuban people. The US government is stopping that. Not Cuba.

At this point the best way to unseat the relatively meaningless state of Cuba in its current form would probably be to normalize relationships and let Cubans see what they are missing.

But that would remove the pleasure America gets from flexing its muscly muscles and inducing pain and horror for decades.

Soon everyone will remember: if you cross America's wishes YOU WILL PAY FOREVER.

In a sense we are kinda like our cartoon of God! We don't really love everyone, we DO however reserve the right to ETERNAL PUNISHMENT.

So what you're saying is that America is like God in that it doesn't love everyone.

...Seems like a very negative outlook.

Note I said our cartoon of God. Obviously God loves everyone. But America's version of the Christian God has a long list of "abominations" and people who need roughin' up from time to time. The only thing we DO understand is eternal vengeance.

THAT'S how America sees God.

Thankfully we actually worship Mammon, so it's all good.

Sounds kind of like a rant to me... Rants are negative... And negativity is is a dead end road.

You have difficulty with disagreeing with others? You should probably see about getting my post censored or some such. That would definitely preserve the "positivity" in your space.

Is there a problem you have with me? Why are you jumping on me? Can you please leave me alone? I'd greatly appreciate that. I could do with less of your type of posts. Thanks!

Oh, no I was talking about post #53. Not the person who typed it.

Are you the type of person who attacks but won't admit to yourself that you attacked? I wrote those words and you decreed them a rant. NOT because the words were negative but because you felt it was a "rant".

You said those words.

If you are unable to be honest with yourself how can you be expected to be honest with others?

Please leave me alone.

I just feel like it's unfair to say a bunch of negative things about how "Americans" think. Especially without offering examples or explanations that detail why this occurs.

...Because with better detail, we might be able to come up with solutions, which is *positive*... You know what I mean?

I'm essentially trying to help make a better argument is all. Something we can work with, and take it in different directions... Like "bifurcation".
