The Bible tells us that if you want a long life, then seek wisdom. Job 12:12 says that wisdom is possessed by the aged. Given that, it’s not hard to understand why God in Leviticus 19:32 says, “You shall stand up before the gray head and honor the face of an old man...” A person who is old didn’t become old by being a fool.
A fool can be a young lion, whom Psalms 34:10 says suffers from want and hunger. A young lion may seek more, regardless of how much he has. But in the grand scheme of things, whatever he possesses is meaningless unless he has a purpose for the things he acquired. In the Parable of the Rich Fool in Luke 12:13-21, a rich person laid up treasures for himself, and as he was on the verge of building a big storage area to house the treasures he has, God says, “Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will They be?’ So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.”
Had the rich man lived long enough to acquire some of the Lord’s wisdom, he would have realized that he would be better off planning whom to give his possessions to so as to make good use of them. He would have realized that God favors those who give to the less fortunate, as it shows in Matthew 25:31-46. None of us knows when our time will be up.
So, one who is interested in acquiring wisdom will do well to listen to an older person. Throughout that person’s life, he has made judgment calls, discerning which way to go. It’s sorta not unlike a computer that, with every computation chooses either “1” or “0.” The computer may follow a string of “1’s” or “0’s” Or it my go 1-0-1 or 1-0-0-1, or 0-1-1-0, etc. The route to a solution is infinite, and with every such integer the route is determined. One’s whole life is a decision tree, with a million forks in the road. Go down the wrong road, and you suffer the consequences. Go down the right road, and you’re on your way to living a long life.
Under God, wisdom is the instrument toward living a long life.
