Why does this surprise anyone? For years now his intentions are laid bare in public. When his son got into trouble with drugs he said the state will correct the son for him. He also said that Chinese people in general need to be herded like animals by a strong authoritarian because they are incapable of self determination.

The lovable and aloof Jackie you see on screen is but of a mere façade. In real life Jackie is not really well liked by his peers.

Hong Kong action movie superstar Jackie Chan said he wanted to join the Communist Party of China (CPC) at a recent forum in Beijing, a comment that experts said reflected Hong Kong elites' increasingly objective and rational understanding of the CPC amid the city's reflection on its position and search for its future development.

Many of those "House churches" are little more than cults.

China has two state-sponsored churches. At least one of which predates the republic, the Three Self Movement Church. It is a myth that Christianity in China itself is banned. What is being banned are cults that preach apocalypticism, superstition, and anti-Chinese values.

I suspect mainstream Christianity would be banned under all three then.

It is the opposite. The government sanctioned ones are the cult like. While the rest are closer to the mainstream teachings. All "official" churches in China are nothing more than a state sponsored version of the religion. It must follow the political dictates of the communist principles with Chinese characteristic.

What exactly do you mean by that?
If you do not obey the CCP and preach Jesus, not on their terms, they might put you in a re-education or forced labor prison. If you worship Xi and the CPP, they do not put you in prison. They like to be praised, not criticized.

I am unfamiliar with the news source, but if that's true, that's disturbing.

My impression of the Three Self Movement is that its theology is inline with mainline Protestantism in the US, like the PC-USA or Episcopalians.

This 2019 article indicates the CCP is jailing more Christians and closing churches, not opening churches or sponsoring Christian missionaries.
In China, they’re closing churches, jailing pastors – and even rewriting scripture

In 2020 CCP state allowed Three Self churches were being shut down.

Join or flee....

Alarmed by Beijing’s rapid erosion of their freedoms, Hong Kongers are voting with their feet. The exodus has picked up pace this month, with net outflows of residents regularly exceeding 1,000 a day, according to government figures compiled by activist investor David Webb, even as the pandemic continues to disrupt travel. Many of the emigres are taking up Britain’s offer of safe haven and a path to citizenship for some 5 million residents of its former colony, introduced in response to Beijing’s crackdown in the financial hub.

The British government expects roughly 300,000 to make the move over five years, in what would be one of the largest waves of migration into the country.

Sure, some house churches are cultish in some of their teaching, the lack of governance due to the need to try and stay off the government's radar doesn't help.

But "anti-Chinese values" is a broad catch-all that is often used to shut down perfectly legitimate churches.

As per usual with Chinese things, the official churches like the three self movement church sound perfectly reasonable in their official statements.

Indeed. You might get something like Christianity in a state-sponsored church, but whenever theology comes up against government policy, policy will win out.

Then there's the very real issue of surveillance of people in those state churches too.
