This expert says common theories about the handshake's history are 'garbage'. Here's what she argues

Interesting.

We just keep repeating this idea that the handshake originated because it was … to show you weren't using a weapon," she tells ABC RN's Late Night Live.

"The idea is your right hand is your sword hand. So if you're offering it, it means that you don't have a sword on you, and that shake up and down dislodges any weapon hidden up your sleeve.
....
She argues that the handshake is biological, rather than cultural.
"It's deep within our DNA," she says.
...
two chimps really going at each other in this fight, really trying to kill each other, and then going up to each other sheepishly afterwards to shake hands."
...
She points to a study showing a tendency for people to sniff their hand after a handshake. At Israel's Weizmann Institute of Science, volunteers who shook hands were found to be more likely to sniff their hand immediately afterwards, while those who did not shake hands were much less likely to do so.

The researchers argue this demonstrates a form of subliminal "chemosignalling" – communicating human emotions through smell.

She might be correct. I don't recall sniffing my hands after a handshake.
