At Israel's Weizmann Institute of Science, volunteers who shook hands were found to be more likely to sniff their hand immediately afterwards, while those who did not shake hands were much less likely to do so.
The researchers argue this demonstrates a form of subliminal "chemosignalling" – communicating human emotions through smell.
