Malachi 3:
1
Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way
before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple,
even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in:
behold, he shall come, saith the Lord of hosts.
2 But who may abide, on the day of his coming?
and who shall stand when he appears?
For he is like a refiner's fire, and like fullers' soap:
3 And he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver:
and he shall purify the sons of Levi,
and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer
unto the Lord an offering in righteousness.
4 Then shall the offering of Judah and Jerusalem be pleasant
unto the Lord, as in the days of old, and as in former years.

Only the first verse can be attributed to John the baptist, who came “in the spirit
and power of Elijah”. The rest is to come, as it is written in the Gospel:

Mark 1:1 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
2 As it is written in the Prophets: Behold, I send My messenger before Your face,
Who will prepare Your way before You.
3 The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord; make His
paths straight.

The voice of one crying in the wilderness is of course, Isaiah 40:3.

If Elijah were to come now for final fulfillment of Malachi 3, to what temple does
he “suddenly come”? The apostle Paul has made it clear that the temple of the Lord
is now the hearts of His elect.

Romans 11:
2
God has not cast away His people whom He foreknew. Or do you not know
what the Scripture says of Elijah, how he pleads with God against Israel, saying,
3 Lord, they have killed Your prophets and torn down Your altars, and I alone am left,
and they seek my life.
4 But what does the divine response say to him? I have reserved for Myself seven
thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal.
5 Even so then, at this present time there is a remnant according to the
election of grace.

There is more than double that number in Israel today who identify themselves
as Messianic Jews. We cannot know for sure how many are true elect, for only
the One who can see and know our hearts can identify “the seal of the Spirit”,
and His true elect. If there are 7,000 now, and I am not saying there has to be,
but just for discussion, is that not who the Messenger would appear unto when
He comes? Many say another temple must be built. The scriptures say that the
Lord is building His own temple in the spirit using the “spirits of just men made perfect”.
Will the messenger come to an orthodoxy, or a true remnant? We may soon know,
if we are anticipating his arrival.

John was very precise in claiming which words of prophecy
applied to his ministry.

John 1:
19
Now this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites
from Jerusalem to ask him, Who are you?
20 He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, I am not the Christ.
21 And they asked him, What then? Are you Elijah? He said, I am not.
Are you the Prophet? And he answered, No.
22 Then they said to him, Who are you, that we may give an answer to those
who sent us? What do you say about yourself?
23 He said: I, The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Make straight
the way of the Lord, as the prophet Isaiah said.

Malachi 4:4 “Remember the law of Moses my servant, which I commanded to him in Horeb for all Israel, even statutes and ordinances. 5 Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and terrible day of Yahweh comes. 6 He will turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the earth with a curse.”

Matthew 17:9 As they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus commanded them, saying, “Don’t tell anyone what you saw, until the Son of Man has risen from the dead.”

10 His disciples asked him, saying, “Then why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?”

11 Jesus answered them, “Elijah indeed comes first, and will restore all things; 12 but I tell you that Elijah has come already, and they didn’t recognize him, but did to him whatever they wanted to. Even so the Son of Man will also suffer by them.” 13 Then the disciples understood that he spoke to them of John the Baptizer.

When was the last time you read Revelation 14:1-5? Do you have any thoughts about that section, @Minister Monardo? I read chapters from Revelation 11:14 - to Revelation 14:1-14 before going to bed last night.
You do well to read and meditate on Revelation, for there is a blessing in it.
Rev 1:3 Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of this prophecy,
and keep those things which are written in it
; for the time is near.
On the other hand, I avoid commenting on or teaching from Revelation as much as possible,
lest I come into condemnation, for it is also written:

Revelation 22:
18
For I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds
to these things, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this book;
19 and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away
his part from the Book of Life, from the holy city, and the things which are written in this book.
I have a genuine concern that many are adding to or taking away from this book in trying to offer
their interpretation, to their own hurt. I will point out one thing from the chapter to which you are
inquiring as relevant to me, and perhaps to you as the Holy Spirit reveals to you.

Revelation 14:4 These are the ones who were not defiled with women, for they are virgins.
These are the ones who follow the Lamb wherever He goes. These were redeemed from among men, being firstfruits to God and to the Lamb.

I would ask, have the firstfruits been gathered? Has this feast passed? I consider firstfruits
to be very significant by the Law, by prophecy, and by apostolic teaching.

James 1:18 Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we might be
a kind of firstfruits of His creatures.

And to whom is James addressing?
"To the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad".
Grace and Peace to you, MG.

Thank you, brother dq, good to hear from you. We have been discussing Malachi 4 prophecy
the past couple of days here:

When Elijah Comes
I posted a follow up on the topic overnight.
Luke 1:17 does not fulfill Malachi 4
This thread is a part 3 to the discussion. I thoroughly search out Malachi 3 as it applies to
the Gospel narrative, so it is more
of a prequel to the other two. :)
All blessings to you today!

I saw the verse, “...came in the spirit and power of Elijah.” This reminded me of two other verses. Sorry you could not see the connection.

Of course I saw the connection. It had come up in one of the other threads. Sorry, if
I was unclear. Thanks again.

19 and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away

The text indicates that this is based on a certain condition that has to be met first, that being that one first hears the words of the prophecy of this book, as in fully understands the words, then if they add to any of these things, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this book.

Let's stop here and think about this for a moment.

Let's suppose that there were some in the first century, some in the 2nd century, some in the 3rd century, some in the 19th century, some in the 20th century, and some in the 21st century, that heard the words of the prophecy of this book, thus fully understood the words of the prophecy then added to these things. How then is it that God added to each of them the plagues that are written in this book when all of them didn't even live in the same era of time when they added to the book, and that most of them are long dead and gone by now in this scenario, and that the last 7 plagues, for example, these are still future?

Even if someone were to argue that the last 7 plagues are not still future but have already been fulfilled, but not only those plagues, every plague mentioned in the book has already been fulfilled, so what about a scenario where one hears the words of the prophecy of the book in the 21th century then adds to these things? How does God fulfill adding to them the plagues written in the book if none of the plagues are future but all of them are past and already fulfilled?

Let's stop here and think about this for a moment.
Good morning David,
The reason I quoted Revelation 22:18, 19 is by way of explanation to MG, that I do not attempt
interpreting or speculating on most of Revelation. MG had asked me to comment on something
from Revelation 14, and I had little comment, and offered this as the reason why. I am not sure
how to respond to your query. The church through the centuries have added to Revelation by
having at least three distinct schools of thought on interpreting the symbolic passages. I only
know this because I saw in a study Bible a table with three schools of interpretation, and how
each differed in opinion about things such as the plagues. To me, this is "adding to" the
scriptures, and I steer clear.

Remember last night I mentioned millennium in your thread on 3 Peter, and I was
careful to state that I was not trying to derail your thread towards a discussion of the different
positions on such a topic that comes heavily from Revelation. My point was only that if 1000 years
is like 1 day to the Lord, a millennial period to come could correspond to a "seventh day" for man
before the end of time. That was simply speculation, I described as a "thought experiment", from
2 Peter 3. If someone tried to push the topic into Revelation 1000 years, I would have left that to
you how to moderate your own thread, but I would not have engaged, but politely declined.
I apologize for such a long winded explanation, but after the interesting discussion last night
on 2 Peter 3, I owed you a thorough explanation before declining to comment on plagues of
Revelation.
As to this thread, the topic is directed towards the possibility of a "spiritual revival" in Israel
prior to the second coming, and would Elijah be directly involved in restoring worship "in
spirit and in truth", or some other leader, in "the spirit and power of Elijah", as was John.
Thanks for responding,
Grace and Peace
James
