So far in the book of James chapter 1 we have covered that its not good to be double-minded, but single minded in our walk of faith in Gods promises. We also learned from Matthew 5 and looking at what Jesus Christ talked about to the disciples of what being blessed is like from Verses 1-12. We learned that life is going to pass away eventually here on earth. We learned that God not tempt, nor is tempted by evil. We learned that Father - is light, and all perfect and good things come from above. We learned that the anger of man does not achieve the righteousness of God and we left off ending in verse 20.
19 This you know, my beloved brethren. But everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger;
Anger comes from our flesh (heart/mind - soul) The spirit is quench if you are a believer. There will be destruction of relationships and corrupts our own heart. James is encouraging the twelve tribes scattered abroad to be quick to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger.
20 for the anger of man does not achieve the righteousness of God.
Anger of man causes destruction. It is not of God; Jesus Christ is our righteousness and we have the spirit of Christ in us as believers, we quench the spirit reacting in situations that are of our own ways and not the ways of God walking and living by the holy spirit/spirit of Christ.
21 Therefore, putting aside all filthiness and all that remains of wickedness, in humility receive the word implanted, which is able to save your souls.
The implanting (seed) of the word received (into our heart) saves your soul.
In Matthew 16: Jesus speaks this: 26 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?
What will be a profit for you as a human being to gain the whole world and forfeit your mind/will/ and emotion towards the world?
What will a man give in exchange for His soul? What would you give to give away your own mind/will/ and emotion?
5590 psuche - Soul, life, self - feelings, desires, affections aversions - soul (syn. with heart).
The word psychology was formed by combining the Greek psychē (meaning “breath, principle of life, life, soul,”) with –logia (which comes from the Greek logos, meaning “speech, word, reason”). An early use appears in Nicholas Culpeper’s mid-17th century translation of Simeon Partliz’s A New Method of Physick, in which it is stated that “Psychologie is the knowledg of the Soul.” Today, psychology is concerned with the science or study of the mind and behavior.
2588 Kardia - Heart - Is part of our flesh nature ; the heart - mind - character - inner self - will - intent.
21 Therefore, putting aside all filthiness (Moral Filth from the heart) and all that remains of wickedness (All evil desires that might be with-in - Mark 7:20-23)
Putting aside our own desires - in the humility or gentleness of receiving the word implanted which is able to save your soul. - Salvation - turning our hearts towards God.
Jesus Christ says in Matthew 22:37 And He said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’
You can see that Jesus Christ the Lord explains that if you are a follower you shall love Yahweh your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. Doing so it is possible for the implanted word to save our soul. What would rather have a heart for the world or a heart for God? You have to make that decision for yourself.
22 But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves.
In your heart prove to be doers of the word; do not just receive the word and turn away from the implanted word; live by what is truth and do not fool yourselves.
23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror;
A mirror reflects ourselves - almost like looking at our own soul but in a body: In which all have used our bodies to do many filthy things or evil things towards others, the mirror reflects the imperfections (deep thought reflection of the self). Of a remembering of life completely (all decisions made). No one on this planet has ever done good. All have fallen short of the glory of God and it is why all need a saviour and why God sent His Son Jesus Christ to pay for the sins of all mankind that we can have a relationship with our Father in heaven, by and through faith in the Lord.
24 for once he has looked at himself and gone away, he has immediately forgotten what kind of person he was.
Leaving and walking away from the reality of how us humans are. No longer caring.
25 But one who looks intently at the perfect law, the law of liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an effectual doer, this man will be blessed in what he does.
Ps 19:7 The law of Yahweh is perfect, restoring the soul;
The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.
Ps 119:142 Your righteousness is an everlasting righteousness,
And Your law is truth.
Romans 7:
12 So then, the Law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.
13 Therefore did that which is good become a cause of death for me? May it never be! Rather it was sin, in order that it might be shown to be sin by effecting my death through that which is good, so that through the commandment sin would become utterly sinful.
14 For we know that the Law is spiritual, but I am of flesh, sold into bondage to sin.
Looking at the perfect law is the Law of Commandments given by Yahweh - All have broken the commandments - So it is holy and good. Paul says that the law is spiritual. That means to me because of the spirit of Christ in us an if we walk by faith in the spirit ; Christ in us performs the works of doing the law (not our selves) - and believers have freedom in the law of liberty - the liberty that Christ Jesus brings to us. Which means we remember our failings and understand that when we do mess up it is our flesh that caused us to have sinned or missed the mark of Loving God, and loving our neighbor as ourselves.
Blessed are those who seek to Love God with all their heart, all of their mind, and all of their soul. Not forgetting what God has done by sending His Son Jesus Christ to pay for all of the sins of mankind and not just our own in which their is comfort from God and peace being justified by faith in Christ Jesus which creates peace with God. (Romans 5:1-3) Even though we go through different trials of whatever the world may bring up to us in this life.
26 If anyone thinks himself to be religious, and yet does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this man’s religion is worthless.
If any persons thinks of himself to be someone whom worships God; yes does not bridle his tongue deceives his own heart - the mans worships is worthless.
1 Peter 3:10 “The one who desires life, to love and see good days,
Must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit.
27 Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.
Here we have a clear cut description of what Pure and undefiled religion looks like in the sight of Yahweh our Father, and God. Which is this: To visit orphans and widows in their distress, and keep oneself unstained by the world.
To love others, and first and foremost love God
1 john 2:16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world.
We live in this world but this is not our only destination ; their is a heavenly destination and all people have a choice in this life to seek after God or not.
Galatians 6:8 For the one who sows to his own flesh shall from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit shall from the Spirit reap eternal life.
A God given choice.
