I would like to share/remind you of a most wondrous prophecy of the Bible proving God’s astounding and most excellent faithfulness and mercy and love and forgiveness. The following is only one such account or prophecy and though there are many this one has always been dear to my heart.
I am speaking of the account of Abraham’s testing.
Abraham as a test was asked by God to sacrifice his only son Isaac whom he loved dearly. Abraham and Isaac were to go to the region of Moriah a 3 day journey (notice the 3 days) to carry out God’s command. Upon arrival, Abraham dismissed his servants and tells them they will return. Isaac then asks where the lamb for the sacrifice is and Abraham says God Himself will provide the lamb. Abraham however readies Isaac for sacrifice and is about to slay him when the voice of the Angel of the LORD (whom is Jesus in the OT) cries out for him to not lay a hand on Isaac. God says, since you have done this and not withheld even your only son whom you love from me I know that you fear (read: respect and honor) God. (Notice the Angel of the LORD equated to God in the text; also notice that it is then Jesus who puts a stop to Abraham’s slaying of Isaac.) Abraham looked up and saw a ram caught in the thicket and it was substituted for the sacrifice of Isaac.
Text in verse14 states that Abraham then called that place The LORD Will Provide and from then on the saying was, “On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided” and that place, later becomes Jerusalem where Jesus was crucified for our sins!
You can find this full account in Genesis 22:1-19
In connection to this account you may also wonder about Abraham’s feelings being perhaps callous in attempting the sacrifice of his only son so see Hebrews 11:17-19:
17 By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered Isaac. This man, who received the promises, was ready to offer his only son, 18 about whom it was said, “Through Isaac your offspring will be traced.” 19 He reasoned that God also had the ability to raise him from the dead, and in a figurative sense, Abraham did receive him back from the dead.
So faithful and long suffering is our God that His Christ would be sacrificed so very many centuries later.
If God is so long suffering and patient with us we must not give way to any doubts concerning the Lord’s return on the Day of Judgement.
