I just imagine 2A enthusiasts after hearing stories like this standing there with their Thin Blue Line flags, mouth agape, one eye twitching as they try and grasp the irony of it all. "...er...good guy.. um.. with... gun.. uh...em... we... we support the police.... 2nd amendment.... "

Indeed, it does poke a hole in the hole 'good guy with a gun' argument.

In this link, scroll down halfway down the page and you'll see about 500 pages of links to accounts where a good guy managed to defend himself/herself with a gun.

You underestimate their ability of rationalisation.

Most comment sections are full of people calling the good guy with a gun "not very smart" (insert harsher words here) because he held the gun in his hand. Obviously they wouldn't have made this mistake.

The necessity of securing un-moist garments would be the prime priority for most of us including, yours truly.

Yeah, but if it's not the police, better shoot him. Then somebody else can shoot you, and somebody else can shoot him, and when the police show up, they can finish off whoever's left.

That's how you play rock, paper, scissors in America. Bad guy kills cop, good guy kills bad guy, cop kills good guy.

They need to settle this in the gunderdome, two good guys with a gun enter, one good guy with a gun leaves, he will be named best guy with a gun and whatever he says, goes.

I wouldn't be surprised if 500 pages could be filled with stories about toddlers accidently shooting, maiming and killing themselves or others, road rage turned deadly, intrafamilial shootings, gun suicides, and guys shooting themselves in the balls.
Where are all those stories on the NRA website, Aldebaran?

But to your point, I'm sure there are plenty of cases where guns saved the day. So it just goes to show that guns really are a ray of hope in a country torn apart by gun violence.

Just on a hunch I went on /r/news and typed in "shoots self" in the search bar and these are literally the first results that showed up. I bet if I actually cared I could compile 5000 pages like this. Luckily I don't.

What else would you expect the cops to do? They show up, bodies everywhere, one guy standing there with a gun...

Fair enough.

I guess we can forget that whole "arming teachers to stop school shootings" thing and throw another NRA talking point on the bonfire.

Yeah. After the school shooting in FLA a few years back, they were talking about arming teachers. My first thought was how would you like to be a "good guy with a gun" when the cops pull up to that scene.

I wouldn't expect the cops to do anything different, which is why I don't buy the "good guy with a gun" narrative.

It's not a narrative since it works.
Aside from that the police are also good guys.

The " narrative" here is, any excuse to push your
agrnda.

Better to be a sheep than a sheep dog.-?-

Friendly fire happens in combat.

But when the police show up, dropping gun and putting hands
up seems wise.

Exactly.

Or another good guy with a gun could well have killed the first good guy with a gun.

When good guy with a gun shows its flaws, just point to the good guy and call him stupid... et, not wise.

Good thing that felony murder exists, or there would be no legal consequences for engaging in a felony.
The dead good guy’s loved ones can take great comfort in that.

That’s nice. But the point is that having a firearm carries both great responsibility and great risk.

I'm sure it will bring them much-needed closure that the ones responsible for his death will feel the full force of the law.

Don't have it in your hand when they come. Set it down and put your hands in plain view when the police arrive so you're not perceived as a threat.

Tough situation for all involved.

On one hand, I don't fault the guy for intervening...he was stopping a guy who was going on a rampage...on the other hand the police arriving there (at that time) just saw a guy with a rifle after it was reported that a guy with a rifle was shooting at people.

Even if we take guns out of the equation...

Let's say there was a bar fight happening and a guy was throwing punches at innocent people and the police were called. If, in between the time of the call and the police actually arriving, I decide I've seen enough of it and decide to clock the guy, and the police walk in as I'm doing it and the description was "6' tall white male attacking people in a bar", i can't necessarily fault them for walking in and thinking that I was the guy they got the call about.
