Submission is simply choosing to follow someone’s direction. As on the dance floor, it takes two to tango ― One person generally leads, the other follows. But there needs to be balance, trust, and mutual respect to make it work. Every Christian (single or married) at some point is called to submission (Eph. 5:21). In the context of marriage, the Bible says that wives are specifically called to submit to their husbands (Ephesians 5:22-24).

“Submission is not weakness – it is strength. It is not weakness for the boat to submit itself to the laws of sailing. The submission of the boat to the laws of sailing is it very strength. It is the rule of sailing that enables the boat to utilize her full strength, to harness the wind, and thus it takes on the strength of the wind. It is not a weakness of the Son of God that made Him obey the will of the Father – it was power, the power of His own will to will the will of the Father.” – Dr. Michael Youssef.

If you steer your little sailboat
straight against the wind,
it will blow you dead in the water
and the waves will flip you
up and down and all around,
while the wind is just flapping your sails.
And this is why your
. .. r-i-g-g-i-n-g
. . . . ..is getting all rattled.
But if we obey the flow of
the sweet and gentle breeze,
this will ease us to safe harbor,
plus the waves of this life's troubles
will help to push us there :)

Every Christian (single or married) at some point is called to submission (Eph. 5:21).
Yes >

"submitting to one another in the fear of God." (Ephesians 5:21)

So, I see God wants submission which is "to one another" and therefore He wants mutual submission. And this mutual submission is "in the fear of God". I consider this means we are first attentive to our Father and how He has us submitting, how He is guiding our relating so our relating is in sharing with Him . . . > in His peace ruling our relating >

"And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful." (Colossians 3:15)

So, all is with God. And submission is good for us, if our submitting is with Him the way He means this.

Also, we have >

"nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock." (1 Peter 5:3)

This is to leaders. Leaders must not lord themselves over God's people. But they are our "examples" . . . of how to relate, if they do not lord themselves over us. Therefore, if they must not try to use and control people, we all need to follow this good example . . . not trying to lord ourselves over anyone.

But God uses good example to win people to obey Him and to have all the good He desires to share with us as His family.

For me, this means no arguing which can be a way of trying to control and use another person. Do not try to get the attention mainly to myself. But be prayerful, sensing and submitting to how God guides us in His peace, all the time. And if I fail, trust God to get me back with Him and loving sensitively and kindly.

"Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you." (Ephesians 4:31-32)

Anger can be something used to try to control other people. Unforgiveness can be a way of trying to control, and demanding that others answer to us.

Instead, be submissive in God's peace, trusting how God is able to do His good with us.
