Crowds often, if they are angry and full of indignation, will vent their frustration out on a living sacrifice. Usually a nobody or an outsider who challenges their way of life. The Pharisees in the case of Jesus managed to whip the crowd into asking for Barrabas' freedom rather than the Lord Jesus'.

Crucifixion was also intended to be a punishment to prevent people from rising up and challenging Rome. It was meant to be cruel and terrible. It was never a polite topic of conversation and the Romans were strict in their discipline of potential rebels. There was even a policy used in extreme circumstances in the army called decimation. Where one in every ten men would be chosen to be beaten to death with his brother soldiers, even if he did nothing wrong.

The mistake is in thinking that humanity has moved beyond that. We're just as capable as they were of being that cruel given the circumstances.

Hello goodhuman,

Here is one reason: 17 So when the crowd had assembled, Pilate asked them, “Which one do you want me to release to you: Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?” 18 For he knew it was out of envy that they had handed Jesus over to him. 19 Besides, while he was sitting on tthe judgment seat, his wife sent word to him, “Have nothing to do with uthat righteous man, for I have suffered much because of him today vin a dream.”

20 But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus executed.

21 “Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” asked the governor.

“Barabbas,” they answered.

22 “What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called the Messiah?” Pilate asked.

They all answered, “Crucify him!”

23 “Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate.

But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!”

24 When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. “I am innocent of this man’s blood,” he said. “It is your responsibility!”

25 All the people answered, “His blood is on us and on our children!”

26 Then he released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified.

According to the Gospel of Matthew 27:17-24. Pontius Pilate saw that it was out of envy from the elders and chief priest is why they delivered him up to be crucified on the cross. He Pontius Pilate was also warned by His wife having suffered a dream about having nothing to do with the righteous man. So they followed through with what happens at the feast of the governor was accustom to release for the crowd any one prisoner they wanted. The people decided to let Barabbas go, and Pontius Pilate went with the decision they had chosen and went on to tell them that his hands was innocent of this man's blood and had Christ to be crucified.

It was more than Human nature that inspired the cruelty - It was demonic...
Possible interference. But humans have been that way since Cain and Abel right up til today. Last summer was a perfect example of how easy it is to rile the masses..

Same reason 99% of the world is locking down, wearing masks and taking vaccines they do what satan and his children say and ignore God and biblical prophesies, same thing happened at the crucifixion the devils children controlled the crowd by calling for his blood.

It was a large part of the punishment. They made the process degrading, humiliating and as slow and painful as they could.

It wasn't just Jesus who suffered like this. Crucifixion was a common form of punishment for non Roman criminals.
Public nudity was grown on in most societies so there was the humiliation of being named in public, it was degrading in that movement was prohibited by the arms and legs being restrained by being nailed to the cross and this was compounded by being totally public.

A question for you.
When did the electrical of public executions stop?

Same reason why so many people today take issue with God's Commandments that He personally wrote for us. People prefer to do their own will over God's will for us.

Absolutely nothing has changed today. Man is the same.

There's also the dynamic that Jesus' presence would often arouse demonic activity. The darkness knows when the Light approaches and does all it can to prevent it, because the two cannot coexist.

But we have that same Light in us, and the world will treat us the same way.

"All those who live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution."

I believe that crucifixion was so agonising that the word "excruciating', or the origin of that word, was coined especially to describe the pain involved. It does show man's inhumanity to man and we easily slip into such cruelty now as wars and dictatorships show all too clearly.

Well, one needs to be careful about such statements. Based on actual data, human beings are becoming much less violent over time. This may surprise some, but the evidence is quite clear. Now what this really means is less clear. One could, for example, conclude that the human impulse to violence is lessening over time. On the other hand, one could speculate that while fundamental human nature has not really changed, as you suggest, we have at least learned that we need "systems" in place - social norms, laws, etc. - to minimize the impact of that unchanging human nature.

I find that surprising. The last century was, I've been told, the most violent ever, with scores of millions slaughtered in wars, exterminations, etc.

What you say it true, but it's because of our ability now to kill en masse. It probably is also true, however, that individual acts of cruelty against other individuals has become somewhat less acceptable, even among tyrannical regimes. However, most moderns do not know how savage the ancients --and Medieval civilization--really were and what kinds of viciousness was inflicted upon those people who were victimized.

True. There are more people now too. Too many factors, doesn't pay for me to divide it out too much, and I don't want to belabor it. My main point was and iis that human nature has not changed, and I don't think saying we're generally more peaceful now carries much water when conflict arises.
