This is what we have heard:
Let them thank the LORD for His steadfast love, for His wondrous works to the children of man! -Psalms 107:8
For He satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul He FILLS WITH good things. -Psalms 107:9

Likewise, we heard :
FILLED WITH the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God. -Philippians 1:11

Are our soul filled with good things ? Is it the same with what we have heard; that we are to be filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God ?

Is the good thing that the Lord fills with is the fruit of righteousness?

Do we not hear this :
But as for you, O man of God, flee these things. Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness. -1 Timothy 6:11

are we to pursue righteousness that we may be filled with the fruit of righteousness?

Let us meditate the things that we have heard, and pray that we may gain wisdom and understanding from what we have heard apostle of the Lord have said.

As we have heard :
Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. -Hebrews 2:1

Let us pay careful attention.

So dear ones, let us share what have learned, or may learn.

May the grace and peace of God be multiplied in our lives as we grow in the knowledge of God and our Lord Jesus Christ.

The problem isn't getting filled, we get filled and can get more. The problem is in the flesh and living in the promises of the filling. That starts with believing those promises are real to begin with. The more we walk in them the more obvious they become. And I might add, the more Christ like. But that flesh !! How it can derail us.

Amen, crucifying the flesh is key. The less we squirm around it, the better

Dear one,
Didn’t we cry out in our troubles ? Didn’t we seek His deliverance out of these distresses?

Didn’t our souls long to be satisfied ? Weren’t our souls HUNGRY to be filled with the good things ?

Yes, there were many set their MIND on the things of the flesh. But shouldn’t we lead them to righteousness? As we have heard:

And those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the sky above; and those who turn many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever. -Daniel 12:3

Yes, there were many hungry souls (minds/emotions/will) ; don’t they deserve to be FILLED WITH the goodness of the Lord ? Shouldn’t they be glad for the Lord’s wonderful works to the children of men?

Yes, let us together with them, our souls BE FILLED WITH good things. Let us praise the Lord’s goodness and His wonderful works to the children of men.

Let them thank the LORD for His steadfast love, for His wondrous works to the children of man! -Psalms 107:8
For He satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul He FILLS WITH good things. -Psalms 107:9 ESV

Can we perceive that good things that the Lord fills with are His wondrous works ?

This is what we have heard:
Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does His works. -John 14:10

Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves. -John 14:11

So we can believe on account of the works themselves that our Lord have spoken of.
In other words, the works that our Lord have said of is the words that our Lord Jesus said to us He do not speak on His own authority, but the Father who dwells in Him who does the works. In short, we can believe on account of the words that are from our Heavenly Father in Christ who does works.

So when we heard:
For He satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul He FILLS WITH good things.

Therefore, we can speak and believe that our Heavenly Father in Christ satisfies our longing souls and our hungry souls He fills with good things.

I think the point is that we need to empty ourselves of flesh, sin, things which entangle, in order that we would have room for the Holy Spirit, His will, desire, right thinking in our lives. There is a constant war between flesh and spirit, so if you crucify the flesh, the spirit does not need to war and is unhindered to thrive and flourish in us.

1 Peter 4:
1
Therefore, since Christ suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves also with
the same mind, for he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin,
2 that he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh for the lusts of men,
but for the Will of God.

Walking by faith requires trust in the Lord's sovereignty over our lives.
Over the years, I have heard this scripture quoted:

Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to those
who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.
Unfortunately, this only worked for them up until the "all things" made them uncomfortable.
Situations that made my flesh suffer were "growth spurts" of the Spirit.
Here is one more very popular verse to quote out of context:

Ephesians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
Sounds like something motivational, right? But with a little more context:
Ephesians 4:12 I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound.
Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry,
both to abound and to suffer need.

When do you think the spirit prospered? When did we cry out for more of
His Spirit? Is this not when the in filling comes, when the flesh suffered?

Dear one,
We cannot empty ourselves of the flesh. If we can empty ourselves of the flesh ? Did God have to send His Son to die on the cross ?

But this is what we have heard:

We know that our old self was crucified with Him (Christ) in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. -Romans 6:6

So dear one, we need to identify ourselves with the things of the Spirit, that is, the words that Christ has spoken through His holy apostles.

We have to fill our souls (minds/emotions/wills) with the words of Christ. We need to speak and believe in our hearts, that is, our spirits proclaim in faith, that our old self was crucified with Him (Christ) in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.

Why now I said about speaking through our spirits? Our spirits are our hearts where we commune with God ; for God is Spirit. In our hearts, is where our conscience is being conformed to the norms and values of God that speaks. In our hearts, we intuitively know that God exists and that we can draw near Him through Christ.

As we have heard:
For through Him (Christ) we both have access in one Spirit to the Father. -Ephesians 2:18

Dear one,
Remember what has spoken:

For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit,
of joints and of marrow,
and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. -Hebrews 4:12

Since joints and of marrow, are tightly knitted, so our souls and our spirits.
The thoughts are of our minds and the intentions of the heart are of our conscience.

Dear one, we have heard:
For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. -Romans 8:29

Dear one, how are we to be conformed to the image of His Son ?

Yes, from our hearts, we speak and believe what Christ has spoken Himself, also through His holy apostles and prophets in the Holy Scripture. When in that manner, our minds remembered what He has spoken to us. When we were baptized, we put on Christ. We appeal to God for new hearts or new consciences through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. With these new hearts, we should walk in the way of the Spirit. And apostle Paul told us:
For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. -Romans 8:5
For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. -Romans 8:6

So dear one, we are told to offer our minds, that is, to set our minds to the things of the Spirit.

Our Lord Himself have spoken:
It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. -John 6:63

So when we offer our minds to the words that the Lord have spoken, we set our minds on the things of the Spirit. Yes, we set our minds to the Spirit of His words. Having our minds ruled or lead by the Spirit of God, we will have life and peace that He promised us.

So dear one, we don’t empty our minds, but this is what we have heard:

We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ, -2 Corinthians 10:5

So when the enemy weakened our minds with the flesh, we take every thought captive to obey Christ.

Dear one,
every arguments and lofty opinions that are not aligned with God’s words, raised against the knowledge of God — and we are told to take that thoughts captive to obey Christ. How? By submitting our thoughts to God, and resisting every thoughts from the Adversary in the mighty name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Dear one,
as the wisdom that we heard :
Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. -Proverbs 3:5
In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths. -Proverbs 3:6

So dear one,
Let us trust the Holy Spirit with all our hearts that He helps us in our weaknesses. Yes, when we are weakened by the flesh. Trust in the Holy Spirit whom Christ has sent to help us.

And let us not lean in our understandings or our minds.

Let us acknowledge Holy Spirit in our ways. For we heard:
When I told of my ways, you answered me; teach me your statutes! -Psalms 119:26
Make me understand the way of your precepts, and I will meditate on your wondrous works. -Psalms 119:27

So let us acknowledge what Holy Spirit teaches us. This is what we have heard:

Good and upright is the LORD; therefore He (Holy Spirit) instructs sinners in the way. -Psalms 25:8
He leads the humble in what is right, and teaches the humble His way. -Psalms 25:9

Likewise, we heard :
Let me ask you only this: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing with faith? -Galatians 3:2
Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh? -Galatians 3:3
Did you suffer so many things in vain'if indeed it was in vain? -Galatians 3:4
Does he who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you do so by works of the law, or by hearing with faith' -Galatians 3:5

So dear one, we are filled with the Spirit by hearing with faith. Having begun in the Spirit, let us be perfected through the Spirit. For God supplies the Spirit and work miracles among us by hearing with faith. We thank God for His goodness and wonderful works to us through His Son.

I would not say the way you said : “There is a constant war between flesh and spirit, so if you crucify the flesh, the spirit does not need to war and is unhindered to thrive and flourish in us.”

For we heard:
Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul. -1 Peter 2:11

Dear one, I correct you in love, not to offend you.

For we heard:
that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ,

So dear one, sincerely let us approve things that are excellent, that is, things that were spoken by the Lord Jesus Christ who spoke not of His own will but the will of the Father who sent Him.

Let us be filled with the fruits of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ our Lord to the praise and glory of God.
Amen

Yes, we are to empty ourselves of the flesh as much as possible. It's exactly why Jesus died, to defeat sin. Jesus did not die for our flesh though, but for our souls. Not that the flesh would be comfortable, with all its sinful desires, but that the true inner man within would have eternal life. Yes God will take care of our bodies, but it is just a house for the man within it. And if we crucify the flesh, its sinful desires have no hold over us. Jesus came to give us abundant life. If we are too busy indulging the flesh, we will have no access to that life.

How is it to say that you crucify the flesh? Is this something that you do, or does the Holy Spirit
accomplish this as we walk by faith, in the Spirit?

Once again, is this something we are expected to do, as our own accomplishment, or is this
His work in us, as we walk by faith? This is what the post was addressing. Trust. His sovereignty,
go where the Spirit leads and accept the consequences, if it means that we suffer in the flesh.
We cannot decide for ourselves how to suffer, can we?

Galatians 5:16-26
16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.

19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,

20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,

21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,

23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

26 Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.

Take note of verse 24, although the whole portion of scripture is important for context. We crucify the flesh. It is not an easy thing to do, but through prayer, by God's grace and in His power, we can do it. I think it's one of those those that God uses to show us how much we want something we claim to desire so much. How much do we really want the spiritual things we claim to want? How much do we really desire to be led of His Spirit? If we really do, then we will press in to Him and do what it takes. Not that our efforts can really do anything, it's His grace that accomplishes the task. But we must do our part to press into that grace. That's what I believe is being reflected in these verses. If we live in the spirit, then let's walk it out in our lives. Let's press in to the fullness of it.

24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.
1 Corinthians 1:
3
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies
and God of all comfort,
4 who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those
who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.
5 For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also abounds through Christ.
6 Now if we are afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation, which is effective for
enduring the same sufferings which we also suffer. Or if we are comforted, it is for your
consolation and salvation.
7 And our hope for you is steadfast, because we know that as you are partakers of the
sufferings, so also you will partake of the consolation.

The context of Paul's explanation here, should help you see that Galatians 5:24 makes
clear that it is in Christ, that we suffer the afflictions that crucify the flesh. You cannot
"empty yourself to make room for the Holy Spirit", you have to walk by faith, walk abiding
in the Holy Spirit while enduring "the sufferings of Christ", you cannot crucify yourself any
more than you can save yourself. The work is the Lord's. Do you not know that historically there
are those who have attempted to do so? Self-flagellation, abstentions and acts of penance that seem
pious but do not avail, as they are not the work of the Spirit. The sufferings of Christ are humiliating.

Philippians 3:21 Who will transform our humbled bodies and transfigure us into the identical
likeness of his glorified body. And using his matchless power, He continually subdues
everything to himself.

Colossians 2:

If with Christ you died to the elemental spirits of the world, why, as if you were still alive
in the world, do you submit to regulations—
21 “Do not handle, Do not taste, Do not touch”
22 (referring to things that all perish as they are used)—according to human precepts
and teachings?

23 These have indeed an appearance of wisdom in promoting self-made religion
and asceticism and severity to the body, but they are of no value in stopping
the indulgence of the flesh.

1 Timothy 4:
1
Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith
by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons,
2 through the insincerity of liars whose consciences are seared,
3 who forbid marriage and require abstinence from foods that God created to be received
with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth.
4 For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received
with thanksgiving,
5 for it is made holy by the word of God and prayer.

I'm not sure I understand. Are you in agreement with my last post?

If you minister by the Spirit, you will always face opposition. Overcoming these trials of faith,
afflictions, and persecutions is what crucifies the flesh. Sure, we pray, we rely of Grace, and
we press into the kingdom only by the Will of God.

Anointed Ministry Will ALWAYS Endure Persecutions, Trials and Tribulations
1 Peter 2:
19
For this is commendable, if because of conscience toward God one endures grief,
suffering wrongfully.
20
For what credit is it if, when you are beaten for your faults, you take it patiently?
But when you do good and suffer, if you take it patiently, this is commendable
before God.
21
For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example,
that you should follow His steps:
1 Peter 3:
13
And who is he who will harm you if you become followers of what is good?
14 But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you are blessed.
And do not be afraid of their threats, nor be troubled.
15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense
to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear;
16 having a good conscience, that when they defame you as evildoers, those who revile
your good conduct in Christ may be ashamed.
17 For it is better, if it is the Will of God, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil.

As you can see, this is a major theme running though Peter's first epistle, including 1 Peter 4:1, 2
which was already posted. This is what
@SANTOSO and I have been trying to show you, that this
is the Lord's work. This is how we die to sin.

Yes, you did start to acknowledge this in your last post. However, in this earlier statement:
I think the point is that we need to empty ourselves of flesh, sin, things which entangle, in order that we would have room for the Holy Spirit, His will, desire, right thinking in our lives. There is a constant war between flesh and spirit, so if you crucify the flesh, the spirit does not need to war and is unhindered to thrive and flourish in us.
This lacked merit or scriptural basis in Truth, as you have so worded.
You cannot "empty yourself of flesh", and "make room for the Holy Spirit";
You do not "crucify the flesh so that the spirit does not need to war".
The work is by the Holy Spirit, as the situation demands, you can be filled with the Spirit,
which is the topic of the thread, even as Christ taught.

Mark 10:
19 But when they deliver you up, do not worry about how or what you should speak.
For it will be given to you in that hour what you should speak
;
20 for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you.

Acts 4:
7 And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, By what power or by what name
have you done this?
8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, Rulers of the people and elders of Israel....
So you can see, Peter ministered by the Spirit, by faith, without having to have emptied
himself of his
flesh. He still had his issues to work through, and his epistle was written much later.

I did not mean that we must make an effort (which are filthy rags before the Lord, anyway), but that we must make a choice. We can choose to accept Christ's Lordship and eternal life, or we can choose to refuse it. We can choose to accept the grace to deny ourselves or we can refuse it. We must do the working out of our salvation in fear and trembling. God gives grace, but we must choose to walk in it. We must make the choice that we want to crucify the flesh. It's a harder choice to make than we realise.

By the way, self punishment would achieve nothing anyway. It would not bring us any closer to crucifying the flesh. In fact, we'd be going into the opposite direction of where we'd think we're going. I don't get the logic behind that one.

I think you have misunderstood what I have been saying, and mistaken it for something else. Either way, I have no quarrel with you. I think we can both see the core facts, even if we have been approaching them from two different view points. At least, I'd like to think so. :)

Just understand that crucifying the flesh, and being filled with the Spirit are two different topics,
as I tried to illustrate at the end of my last post.

Dear one,
I am here neither to provoke you or be conceited but to share with you what the Lord makes me understand through the love of Christ.

Dear one, I cannot say that I emptied myself of the flesh independent of the Lord’s sacrifice. For with my own strength, to no avail succeed in ridding of the flesh.

Dear one, the way the Lord taught me through suffering what was wrong, that I have to repent and rely on His strength.

As I have heard:
"You have led in Your steadfast love the people whom You have redeemed;
You have guided them by Your strength to Your holy abode. -Exodus 15:13

the Holy Spirit guides us by His strength that we may be united with our Lord Jesus Christ in His holy abode in Heaven to the glory and praise of the Father.

Dear one, when we heard:
We know that our old self was crucified with Him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. -Romans 6:6

So when we accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, and affirmed our faith before others, and we trust that our Lord have said that He meditates better covenant for us.

Therefore, we set our mind on the things that our Lord have spoken that we identify ourselves, that is, our old self were crucified with Christ.

As we have heard :
that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death,- Philippians 3:10 NKJV

who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself.-Philippians 3:21 NKJV

For those whom He foreknew He also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that He might be the firstborn among many brothers. -Romans 8:29

Dear one,
Therefore, we were being conformed to the Lord’s death through baptism. Our Lord will transform our lowly bodies that it may be conformed to His glorious body, that the God the Father foreknew and predestined us to be conformed to the image of His Son.

As is the man of heaven, Christ Jesus so also are those who are of heaven.- 1 Corinthians 15:48 ESV

As is Christ, the Lamb of God so also we are His lambs.

As also apostle have told us:
It was before your eyes that Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified. -Galatians 3:1

So dear one, before the eyes of our hearts, Jesus Christ died for us because He loves us and in our minds, clearly our Lord portrayed as crucified because He gave Himself for us, to redeem us from lawless deeds and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works.

Dear one, stand fast in the liberty which Christ has made us free, that is, to use liberty as opportunity through love of Christ serve one another. In this manner, we ran well. We resist the persuasion that does not come from God who called us to His grace that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
