Attorney General Mike Hunter announced his resignation on Wednesday, less than a week after filing for divorce from his wife, Cheryl.

The Oklahoman submitted questions to Hunter on Tuesday night about an extramarital affair that the newspaper confirmed through people familiar with the situation. The sources said the affair was with a state employee, who did not work in the attorney general's office.

I'm so torn on this kind of thing. I don't expect politicians to be morally flawless. I think the current culture is merciless, and 2nd chances for moral errors should be an option, at least in some cases. But if he can't do right by his own family, I'm going to have questions about his ability to do right by his constituents. Is that fair? I don't know.

Where have you been? Politicians being involved in sex scandals have been news since Alexander Hamilton.

Resolved: Republican politicians give lip service to marital fidelity as a virtue, but are more frequently (than Democratic politicians) found to have honored it in the breach.

I knew he had to be a republican when he elected to step down, unlike others who simply ignore their responsibility.

There have been plenty of cases of Democratic politicians who have resigned due to sex scandals, though I iwll admit they seem to be outnumbered by Republicans.

Well I, for one would be interested in seeing if there are even any [credible] stats to justify the assertion that Republicans outnumber Democrats when it comes to infidelity. In fact, I think it's a HUGE stretch to assert either party wins out in that arena. I suspect the assertion is just opinion, and nothing more - and biased opinion at that.

Not sure. I think there may be a shadow side to the traditional rigidly conservative mindset that longs for the forbidden.

Or it might be the frat-party take what you can get bro mindset that seems to correlate to contemporary "conservatism".

Personally I am not too worried about marital infidelities. These things happen to human beings everywhere and I don't want to add to people's sorrows. The law no longer apportions blame in my country, accepting irretrievable breakdown as the justification for divorce. A good many infidelities end with reconciliation too.

If we want to settle the issue we could have a start date and count - say - Congress-persons and senators (perhaps include Presidential appointments to cabinet positions) caught in flagrante - Republicans versus Democrats. This would be a definitive result.

Anybody with a few days to spare?

IMO, given his position as the state's attorney general, I can't see how he could effectively perform his job after having an affair with a state employee.

Note I said politicians. I would not tar GOP voters with being like the people who convince them to vote for them. As an experiment, we can look at this, starting in 2000. I'm removing things that don't seem relevant. Jeff Gannon was/is a journalist. Strom Thurmond wasn't married when he impregnated a servant (and that happened long before 2000). If you don't think I'm being generous, I'm leaving Larry 'Wide Stance' Craig off the list. If you still don't, make your own judgments.

  • Gary Condit, Representative (Democrat-California) — His affair
  • Ed Schrock, Representative (Republican-Virginia) — Announced he would terminate his 2004 attempt for a third term in Congress after allegedly being caught on tape soliciting sex with men, ['Mr. Schrock, who is married, is a conservative who voted for legislation to ban same-sex marriages.']
  • Steven C. LaTourette, Representative (Republican-Ohio) He himself had a long-term affair
  • Don Sherwood, Representative (Republican-Pennsylvania) — failed to win re-election following revelations of a five-year extramarital affair
  • David Vitter, Senator (Republican-Louisiana) Vitter's name was then discovered in the address book of Deborah Jeane Palfrey(the "D.C. Madam"). (2007)[116]
  • Randall L. Tobias (Republican), He resigned on April 27, 2007, after confirming that he had been a customer of Deborah Jeane Palfrey (the "D.C. Madam").[118]
  • Tim Mahoney, Representative (Democrat-Florida) In October 2008, he admitted he placed his mistress on his staff
  • Vito Fossella, Representative (Republican-New York) the married Congressman and father of three admitted to an affair with Laura Fay that produced a daughter. (2008)[133]
  • John Edwards, Senator (Democrat-North Carolina) — Admitted to an extramarital affair
  • John Ensign, Senator (Republican-Nevada) — Resigned his position as chairman of the Senate Republican Policy Committee on June 16, 2009, after admitting he had an affair
  • Chip Pickering, Representative (Republican-Mississippi) — On July 16, 2009, it was announced that his wife had filed an alienation of affection lawsuit against a woman with whom Chip allegedly had an affair.[138]
  • Mark Sanford, Governor (Republican-South Carolina) — In June 2009, after having disappeared from the state for nearly a week, Sanford publicly revealed that he had engaged in an extramarital affair.
  • Jack Tarpley Camp Jr., (R) Judge Pleaded guilty to ... illegally giving a stripper his government-issued laptop (ok, I'm not counting this guy, but that's hilarious)
  • Mark Souder, Representative (Republican-Indiana) — Souder resigned to avoid an ethics investigation into his admitted extramarital affair with a female staffer. (2010)[148][149][150]
  • Scott DesJarlais, Representative (Republican-Tennessee) — Admitted under oath to at least six affairs, Additionally, while running on a declared "pro-life" platform, DesJarlais coerced his ex-wife into having two abortions, and tried to persuade a mistress, who was his patient, into an abortion as well.[157][158][159]
  • Donald Trump (Republican), the 45th President of the United States — adult film star Stormy Daniels
  • Tim Murphy, Representative (Republican-Pennsylvania) — Had an extramarital affair
  • Katie Hill, U.S. Representative (Democrat-California) — In October 2019, news reports indicated that she was being investigated by the House Ethics Commission about allegations of sexual relationships with a subordinate.
The tally
Democrats: 4
Republicans: 13

That assertion wasn't made. What was said was that Republican politicians were caught in infidelity more often then Democratic politicians, which seems to be true.

In the 1990s TV show, Dharma and Greg, Greg is running for Congress and gets caught having sex with Dharma, his wife, in their car. The press of course is all over it. Bill Maher has a bit cameo where his monologue is about Greg. "What party is this guy in? He was caught having sex with his wife which means he can't be a Democrat. But he was caught having sex, which means he can't be a Republican."

Why is adultery a resignation matter in America (these days)?

(We have a Royal Family with a pretty dodgy marital record and a Prime Minister who is currently living openly with a woman (not his wife and with a child of his) while married to another woman. I dislike him and his government, but not especially because of his sexual misbehaviour.)

Next you'll be telling me you can dance and buy alcohol on Sundays in the UK.

It's doesn't always lead to a resignation. Take DesJarlais (please). Multiple affairs and abortions, providing drugs to patients, having sex with patients...

Three weeks after he won the [2012] election, DesJarlais said on a conservative talk radio show on WWTN that "God has forgiven me" and asked "fellow Christians" and constituents "to consider doing the same."

Apparently they have, because he has regularly won his elections every two years since.
