We're here for you Dot! Like it or not TAW is a family ;):ebil:

it's unfortunately not crazy uncommon in the military.
True. I avoided relationships for at least the first half of my time in the military purely because of how difficult this life is.

I got engaged before I deployed, and I had guys tell me that I should cheat because "she's probably cheating...."

I agree with all of this, and it's a major contributing factor as to why I'm not married after 17 years in the military.

@Dorothea I'll just say otherwise that I agree with others that you certainly have a family here, and I'm quite sorry to hear that this has happened to you, and your sons.

As you said, it's not uncommon in the military and the military life. I saw the seedy side years ago the first year of our marriage, believe it or not, on how the young Air Force guys were living when I visited my soon-to-be ex-husband when he was stationed in S. Korea. Saw what happened to some military families throughout the time my "ex-husband" was in the Air Force. It's a tough life, even though I grew up a military brat, but of course, I didn't feel anything was strange because that was my life. But Dad was an Air Force Colonel in JAG - a judge and defense lawyer for 30 years. His circle of military buddies was a bit different than my soon-to-be ex-husband's. Doesn't mean JAG was immune, though. Unfortunately, the majority of my dad's cases were domestic, dealing with AF men killing their wives. Ugh

Ya gotta love how nobody has the slightest thought of seeing the best in human nature. That condom mindset with high school parents and chaperones—-“Here, take this. You know you’re going to do it. Who’s kidding whom?”

That’s what I love about Orthodoxy. We know just because we CAN sin, doesn’t mean we must or will. We see the best in Gods grace for our potential, not an inevitable collapse in everything!

I've heard that one too. Usually those guys are the ones that end up with STDs from a port call then they have to call their spouse saying they got an STD.

I think the best advice I was given was "don't get married until your relationship has survived one deployment" from a retired Navy regular at my restaurant.

being a chaplain I am probably in a similar situation to your dad now (thank God!), being a dual professional.

My prayers, Lord save thy servant!

Life is hard. We run into all kinds of obstacles and pitfalls, yet the Lord is faithful and will persist with us at all times. May God bless you and keep you.
Thank you.

Things would have been much different if I'd known that advice then... But I will never regret having my sons, the biggest blessings in my life.
