EVERYONE in this country "might be armed". It's kind of our "thing".
As we have established in another thread:
If we have the right to bear arms, then "being armed" is not a crime.

There are, however, some people who believe that a police officer's decision to shoot someone (regardless of whether or not that person was actually armed) transcends the second amendment.

Because the only thing keeping the country from descending into anarchistic Satanic Hellmouth is that thin blue line?

Why not have the police trained for both?

Instead of a few months of training, why not a 2-3-year program that includes:

Core areas of mental health - de-escalation, what to look for, etc
If our mental health services were better this could be done by mental health system so cops have far less of this to deal with in the first place.
Core areas of psychology - Mental health disorders, addiction, etc
Core areas of social work - Understanding the system
Core areas of medicine - Life-saving measures, medical ailments, and medications and how it can present
Core areas of law - Knowing and understanding basic laws, people's rights, etc
As I said those already trained in these things could do much more of this work before it escalates to needing a cop.

Cops will be needed regardless of if it escalates; mental health professionals are not going to be expected to approach strangers with mental conditions without the backing of a cop; mental health professionals are not going to put their lives in danger that way

Yes, it could be needed. Nothings perfect and things are gonna happen. But the mental health system is sorely lacking which should not be the police to deal with in the first place. To many are left homeless and lack of supervision and meds to help them. They are just left to the streets. It is cruel. It shouldn't be as common as it is at all.
