I've managed to live without a gun in the household I've lived in for nearly 60 years. Never once had I ever even thought...."if only I had a gun".
This situation demonstrates that the answer isn't as the NRA advocates repeat over and over again that we need "one good person with a gun" as a remedy.

You didn't need a gun probably because you live in the suburbs with a competent police force and low crime.

Or an unarmed teacher as in this case. Please pay attention.
But guns make it so much easier. What are you trying to say about all the teachers in all the other school shootings? Are you saying they were cowards who left their students to die because if they didn't have to courage to stand up to an active shooter while unarmed. How many lives could have been saved had more teachers demonstrated the courage and bravery that this teacher had?

Absolutely true. Makes it so easy to kill people that a 100lb college girl can defend herself against a 200lb rapist.

...or Mrs. Groblonski can shoot the 12 year old student in her math class.

BTW, what are the chances that the 200lb rapist also has a gun?

Assuming the rapist has no gun himself?

Who knows? It’s the idea of equalization of power that a firearm potentially brings to a weaker opponent. It’s not an absolute science.

Sometimes it’s worse to have the gun (hesitation to use, and it gets taken from one). Sometimes it’s just what the coroner ordered!

There is a good chance the rapist has a gun. More reason for the 100lb college student to have a gun too.

It would just mean the rapists would knock the girl unconscious first, and then take the gun.

In schools it would mean the 250-pound linebacker punches the 100-pound teacher in the face, knocking her out, then he takes her gun, and starts shooting with the gun provided to him by the school.

Or...the rapist will go to a gun free zone and not worry about women with guns in the first place.

Most rapists don't just go somewhere and grab a woman and rape her.

And your point is what exactly? Are you suggesting that young college girls shouldn't be armed to defend themselves from rape because they are likely to be raped anyway?

So let me get this straight, it is better for a women to be unarmed in the event she is raped because it is better to be raped than to potentially die by their own gun?

Problem is, by the time the rapist has confirmed that he is, in fact, a rapist, he's already closed the gap between himself and his victim... as close as humanly possible, in fact.

Cute, nevertheless you DO admit you agree with the adage, that it's people who do the killing, not the guns they wield.

Why then, if you admit that it's the people who do the killing, do you think it should be the tools they use to commit their crimes that we address rather than those who wield them for the purpose of killing?

I mean - by your logic, the preventive measure for say, someone beating someone else to death, would be to hack off everyone's fists. And you MIGHT have a point - cuz if we did that, there would be no beatings, no "deaths by fist" anymore. But then, what's to prevent someone from using their foot to kick someone to death now? Hack off all feet and that surely wouldn't ever happen again...

Shades of Monty Python and the Black Knight!

FWIW, there are a LOT of things that "make it a heck of a lot easier" for someone to kill:
Knives, Hatchets & axes, Cars & Trucks, Stones/Rocks, Airplanes, Bows and arrows, Slingshots, Candlesticks, Ropes, Wrenches (I like Clue), Bookends, Baseball bats. Power Tools, 100' cliffs...
(I'm sure I've missed a couple here and there)

Common to all, including firearms, are the individuals who wield them for nefarious purposes.
But FAR MORE common to all are the vast multitude of individuals who use (or own) them for positive purposes.

Because it is easier to address the tools then the idea we are going to somehow change human nature.

This is not about human nature. This is about American gun culture.

No other country in the world has the problem of mass shootings America faces today.

The quoted poster was claiming we should address the people rather then the tools. This, to me, speaks to the idea of changing human nature.

As far as American gun culture I would disagree slightly. I think it is less an issue of American gun culture and more an issue of American individualism. We see the same issue with mask wearing. The idea that my rights should not be in any way infringed even if it means others die seems to be common place these days.

I was responding to another. I’m 100% pro gun ownership myself. Still, it can turn out badly for an armed citizen, we must acknowledge this. I accept it and consider the risks worth it.
