Many times, I make the statement that God makes his will perfectly clear when we read what is written, in the context it is written… and to whom it is written to (Jew Gentile or Body of Christ). and for the most part, that is true. …. But over the years, through the process of translation and transmission there have been words and phrases added that were not in the originals, mostly in effort to enhance scripture and make it more understandable.
The King James Version as well as the NIV and a few other versions have been fairly diligent to keep many of the added word in italics, which is helpful…These words, while they may be helpful in understanding are not God breathed, and sometimes not well supplied………One such place is in 1 Corinthians.
Just one word added by translators in four different areas has significantly changed the foundation of this magnificent subject.
In chapters 12, 13, &14 of I Corinthians the word GIFTS has been added four times …..12:1, as well as 13:2, 14:1 & 14:12. These should be deleted or crossed out in your Bible, as they are not in the original text and not well supplied in these verses.
By adding the word Gift, it contributes to the school of thought that it is not our choice ….. but God’s choice who He selects to speak in tongues. I mean yes…. ultimately it is Gods choice, but the qualifying applicant is only restricted to one category, and that group of people is…. those born again, who have accepted Jesus Christ as their lord and savior.
12:1) Now concerning spiritual (gifts) brethren I would not have you ignorant.
The word “spiritual” in verse 1 is the Greek word (pneumatikos) meaning “that which belongs to, is determined by, influenced by, or proceeds from the spirit” (spiritual matters).
By inserting the word GIFTS here, it has subtly established a mental assumption in our minds for this topic ….and that assumption has been incredibly deceptive to many for years… and in turn it has allowed our minds to gloss over a word that throws the door wide open on this subject for all BAB’s (born again believers) in Christ……
I want to submit a few key verses with a literal translation according to usage. This is just a rendering of the text to give a better understanding...starting in 12:1.
12:1 A literal translation could be: Now concerning matters belonging to, determined by, influenced by, or proceeding from, the spirit; brethren I would not have you to be uninformed.
12:3 A literal of verse 3, could be: “Because you were led away by dumb idols in the past. I want to declare unto you that no one who is speaking in tongues is denouncing or calling Jesus accursed. And no one is really capable of declaring that Jesus is lord in their life except by way of speaking in tongues, which is the spirit in manifestation.
12:4 A literal understanding of this would be: “Through the choice or option of God, there are gifts given to man.”
Verse 4 does talk about the “diversity of gifts” …..of which there are seven given to the “Church of the Body of Christ” →(“5 gift ministries” listed in Ephesians Eph 4:11**) →(“holy spirit” “the gift” given at new birth…Acts 2:38) and →(“gifts of healing” because every healing is a gift, but it is still a manifestation thereof …1 Cor 12:9).
**(the 5 gift ministries listed in Ephesians 4:11 These are gifts of service on a horizontal level given to those who are fully committed to serving Gods people.)
Verse 6 states that, God is the one who energizes (worketh) each operation.
In verse 7 of 1 Corinthians 12 it changes from gifts to manifestation.
12:7 “But the manifestation of the spirit is given to every man to profit withal”
The word “but” is a conjunction that sets in contrast that which precedes it … verses 4-6 was dealing with gifts, but now it’s changed from gifts to manifestation.
What’s the difference between gift and manifestation. A gift is individually given, and you do not have it unless someone gives it to you. A manifestation is an evidence, a showing forth of something you already have.
For example: If someone gives you a cell phone…. that is a gift. You make calls, text messaging, take pictures; that is the manifestation or operation of the phone.
If someone gave you a phone with all the features, but you didn’t know how to use it. You would still have the phone (the gift) with all the features, but if you didn’t know how to use it …you could not manifest or operate the phone.
God does not use words haphazardly … We do not have a careless, random, capricious God…. am I right?.... And if God has magnified his Word above all his name (Psalms 138:2) I know without a doubt that the words in the Word of God are perfect ….And words mean things!
If God had wanted to say “But the Gifts of the spirit is given….” in verse 7 He would have used that word, but He did not.
The word manifestation in the Greek is phanerôsis meaning “to be visible,” “bring to light,” “or open to sight” “to show forth in the sense world”…. What is it that we are to bring to light? Verse 7 says the spirit. Verse 7 further goes on to say that it is given to every man (all inclusive) every person (who is born again of God) to profit withal.
If we call these a gift…. we put ourselves in the position of waiting for God to give us one or more of the so-called “gifts” listed in verses 8-10. It stimulates believers to hope, desire, pray and beg for something, and then to question their righteousness, their goodness, and their worthiness, as to why they do not receive it.
Calling it a gift would also make God a respecter of persons as to whom He gives these “gifts” to…. and we know, that God is no respecter of persons….. as the Bible states in Acts 10:34, Ephesians 6:9, Colossians 3:25. …..
God is a respecter of conditions, the condition being “believing” …… believing what is available.
For God to give you two {quote un quote} “gifts” and only give me one …would make him a respecter of persons, that is why the word gifts does not fit into these verses as much as people want to squeeze it in.
By squeezing the word gifts in this verse it takes the accountability off of the believer (where it should be) and puts it on God …..as in → “well God has not seen fit to give me the gift of tongues, prophecy, word of knowledge,” etc.
But God has seen you fit….God did his part when He put His seed (holy spirit, the gift) in you. It is up to you, not God, to make the next move and your next move is to accept what God says is available…. and operate it.
With the amazing benefits of speaking in tongues (of which there are at least 11 maybe 12 this should be something that we all do everyday in our private prayer life….But that’s not all…. there are 8 other manifestation available to us. But I truly believe it starts with speaking in tongues due to the benefits related to this manifestation.
I’m trying to keep this short, but wanted to add this…
I Cor. 12:11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.
Some say the words “severely as he will” are referring to “as God wills”. If that were the case then God just contradicted Himself from verse 7 where He stated “is given to every man”... Furthermore the word severely is the Greek word idia from idios meaning “ones own”. Of the 114 times the word idios is used in the Bible, this is the only place it is translated severely. Usually translated “one’s own” “his own” “your own”.
By using the correct rendering of this word idios, verse 11 would read “dividing (distributing) to every man his own, as he (the man) will”
