It’s so odd how the human brain works. In some cases, we can be so creative and perceptive. And at other times, we’re completely irrational. Especially in how we perceive risk. Statistically, the Covid vaccines are overwhelmingly safe. As per the article, there have been about 2,500 vaccine related fatalities out of 158,000,000 vaccinated persons. That’s 0.0017%. Same as being struck by lightening. The risk of dying in a car crash is about 1 in 100. But driving a car is a familiar situation. And there’s a sense that we have some measure of control. Getting a brand new vaccine is a novel event. And once we get it, we have no control over the results. So we fear it even though all available evidence indicates that the risk of a bad outcome is minuscule. As I said, it’s just how our brains work. In many people, decision-making in an unfamiliar setting is strongly affected by the emotional brain rather than the analytical brain. A neuroscientist might say our amygdala overrides our pre-frontal cortex.
