• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Hi,

I've just been struggling with my faith. I have Schizophrenia and I hear the devil's voice in my head. I was just wondering, is it possible to hear the devil's voice and also have the holy spirit? I worry that I'm not saved because I hear that voice. I keep thinking that if I had the holy spirit then there would be no room for the devil. Is this true?

Thanks,

SnowTiger

It’s just your mind imitating the devils voice to get it’s way with you. My flesh wants control of me too. But the Bible says be ruled by the spirit. I know it sounds hurtful but disregard it as soon as you can. Have you been filling yourself with Gods word?

No there is no way the two can do exist in the same person.

That said, don't forget you have an ill mind which is giving you false messages.
You need to talk to your therapist about intrusive thoughts and how to deal with them.

Satan spoke to Jesus so in that sense Jesus heard the devil's voice too. (Matt. 4)
It's not hearing the voice that's the problem, it's listening to what it says and acting on it like Adam and Eve did rather than correcting the voice with what is written as Jesus did.

If you are a believer then you have the Holy Spirit and cannot be possessed by an evil spirit. The Holy Spirit indwells you bodily so there is no room for another.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20
Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.

The fact you are recognising the devil's voice as the devil is good news for many do not recognise the lies he spreads. It is important you learn the Word of God so you can continue to know who is truly speaking to you and you must also understand you are suffering from an illness where your brain deceives you into thinking there are messages being spoken when there are none.

Do not be troubled in your heart. Learn to accept your limitations and take your medication as prescribed. We all have times of struggling in our faith but if you keep your mind on the things of God you will prevail.

John 14:27
Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

Have you ever had another believer pray over you for healing? My mom suffers from Schizophrenia and my husband and I prayed for healing over her recently. We also prayed for any demons to leave her if they were in her and for any demonic spirits tormenting her to flee in the mighty name of Jesus. She's been saved for about 2 years now, but after salvation her hallucinations and delusions became more religious whereas they never were before that. She would claim to be Jesus, said she's seeing god in her room and he'd be saying perverted things to her. This all sounded very demonic to me. When we finished praying for her, she said she felt something lift off of her. Now, time will tell if she's been healed or not, as my mom goes through manic episodes and doesn't always deal with hallucinations. She can be fine for a long period of time before she goes through another episode. But I have faith in Christ regardless if she still suffers from her illness or not.

We need to be careful with our definitions.

It IS possible to have the Holy Spirit and hear the devils voice.

Jesus did.

But no demon indwelled Him.

Hearing a demonic voice does not mean you are not saved.

However a born again believer with the indwelling Holy Spirit can't be possessed by a demonic entity.

By possessed I mean permanently indwelled and solely controlled by a demonic entity.

The issue is that demonic influences can plant thoughts into the mind without indwelling the individual.

Peter experienced this when He rebuked Jesus.

Mark 8:31 And He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise from the dead. 32 And He was stating the matter plainly. And Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him. 33 But turning around and seeing His disciples, He rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind Me, Satan; for you are not setting your mind on God’s purposes, but on man’s.”

What you need to focus on is being in healthy fellowship, reading the Word, getting prayer from a trusted church leader who has a track record of praying successfully for folks with your challenges.

I keep worrying that I'm not saved because I hear this nasty voice and I think that the Holy Spirit would cast out this nasty voice if I'm saved.

You should get to a church leader ASP and get prayer and support.

No that is not true. You can have the Holy Spirit and still be oppressed by the devil. We are on earth. This is the devil's playground and sadly, humans are not sacred unless they are the Christ and even then the devil took Jesus up on a mountain and tempted Him. Think about that journey. They couldn't have just walked in silence. Satan was probably in his ear the whole time. Satan is a liar. Nothing he tells you is true. Sins confessed and repented for or forgiven are unknown to the devil and he cannot use them against you. After death we will stand before the Lord like in a courtroom and satan will be the Prosecutor, telling God of all we did wrong and why we belong to him. The Bible says we need to stand blameless before God. True we are sinners, but even the worst criminals in history have repented and been forgiven, were sincere in heart and sorry, and loved God and were saved from the pit. There are no guarantees for salvation, and the Lord has basically told us it is a case by case scenario entirely at His discretion. Some may find it unfair, but we know God is just. The closer you get to God, the harder the devil will tempt and lie. The part of the brain the devil sneaks in through can be closed with the right medication. Science has found that door, but don't let people tell you it's all in your head because that IS where it takes place but I don't think it's all YOU. I have read many of your posts. You have something going on, but meds can certainly assist in getting him to put a cork in it and quiet down, letting you live more in peace. You have enough going on without him blabbing at you 24/7. If it's not working, tell your doctor you need to try another plan. Have them alter it until he is nothing but a faint whisper if that. Let me know how it goes and you can private message me anytime and I will tell you what I really think could be going on and I will share my experience with you about something similar.

It's impossible to have something completely good and Holy living inside of you while something completely evil is living inside of you as well.

Christians cannot be indwelt with a demon of any kind,, no not even Satan himself don't let any pastor or person tell you this. It's possible to be INFLUENCED by Satan or a demon but possession is completely impossible.

If you feel or think that you are possessed it's your mental illness talking, not you. I know all too well about schizophrenia and what you're going through. I've had it since as far back as I can remember.

So, it's all in your mind. Last thing that comprehends with a schizophrenic person 8 know but, it's the truth.

Please don't try to get answers on this subject here as this forum is not free from deception and conflicting voices.

Find a loving fellowship and get prayer from flesh and blood leaders rather than Mr. Anonymous from cyberspace.

As someone who is diagnosed Schizophrenic and hears voices every day, and as someone who works as peer support in mental health, the answer is yes it is possible to have The Holy Spirit AND sometimes hear the enemy's voice.

Right off the bat you can look at Jesus, He is God and could hear the devil when He was being tempted, and we all know He had The Holy Spirit.

Do not let this be discouraging, ignore the devil and he will flee. Trust that The Holy Spirit is there to encourage you, and Jesus's angels are there to protect you. This is true and I'm sure you've seen this to be true, or heard it at least.

Just to encourage you I hear The Holy Spirit and Jesus when I ask to, sometimes I hear negative things (not from Jesus) but I ask for myself to only hear Jesus and The Holy Spirit and there are moments of calm. Though throughout each day Jesus is with me and I know He is with you too along with The Holy Spirit of course

While I see where you're coming from I am diagnosed and can hear The Holy Spirit as I'm sure you have when reminded of scripture at times. It is good to seek fellowship even online, aren't you someone online giving him your very own advice? Yes he should be discerning but so should we all, not everything we hear mentally or from other people is necessarily good, but likewise not everything is bad either. Discernment is something we all must ask for and use, such is the plight of being human and living on Earth.

Seek fellowship yes, but ministry is better face to face...

I have ministered on Zoom but prefer folks find support from healthy fellowship first.

No it's not possible to have both. It's an auditory hallucination in your brain. It's not the devil. If you received the Holy Spirit you don't have a devil.

So if Peter was having auditory hallucinations why did Jesus identify it as Satanic?

That's not a demon, it's the sin of Romans 7.

Definitely seek help in your surroundings, the best remedy for built up sin is to confess it continually, but it shouldn't be dealt with alone.
