Is there anything that we know for sure that God will give us if we ask or seek knock for it?
Matthew 7:7 says:
Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.
What does this mean? If we all asked for great wealth would even God be able to give this to all of us? I believe He could certainly deposit a million pounds/dollars into each of our bank accounts if He wanted to so that we'd all become millionaires but would we be rich? My knowledge of economics is sketchy but I think if this happened the price of a load of bread would suddenly jump to about a £1,000 and we'd be no better off in real terms.
Similarly, if we all prayed to meet the right person and get married, is this possible? There are slightly more women than men in the world so how can it be? (Conveniently leaving the subject of same-sex marriage aside for now!)
So I was wondering if more "mental" things were possible. If we all prayed for inner peace for example, could that be granted? At first I thought 'yes' but when I thought of people with severe anxiety, OCD and PTSD and things like that, I'm not so sure. And how about those in chronic physical pain? Btw I'm not arguing that peace isn't possible for people suffering these afflictions, I'm just asking whether it is.
To try to keep this relatively brief, here are a few things I thought it was possible that God can give us all without exception:
The certainty that we are loved unconditionally.
The knowledge that we are forgiven of any wrong we may have done if we sincerely repent.
The sense that we can trust God to always be working towards good in our lives and to make good use of anything good that we do.
The feeling that we are never apart from Him, that He wants a real realtionship with us, one with ongoing communication as with any human relationship.
Does anyone have any comments or observation, or have more examples of things we can pray for with complete assurance that God is able and willing to give us? And if God does give us something, do we have to do anything ourselves in order to receive it?
