1) ONLY the US and Yemen allow folks to have a gun without a permit.

2) The US in the only country that does not guaranatees health care as a right of citizenship.

That's what we are so proud of as Americans. We have the most gun deaths and crimes. We have the most expensive health care with very poor outcomes on almost any measure. In so many countries, killings by gun of 4 or more in a crime is almost unheard of. Be proud, this happens in the US almost every day.

The federal government is not going to act. Far too many are accepting of US exceptionalism with regard to guns and health care. It is up to the states to take at least some action.

That’s only the case with a number of restrictions, such as among wealthy, first world nations, as there are multiple countries with much higher violent crime rates.

What other country guarantees the right to bear arms to its citezenry?

The federal government is not going to act. -- Maybe.

I don't feel I know that one yet. For one thing, what if instead of just 8 or 10 dead, tomorrow it's 28 or 31?

Too soon to say. Even a drip-drip-drip or 4 dead, 4 dead, 6 dead, 5 dead, 4 dead can get to someone at some point.

and yet these same services are unaffordable or financially crippling for a major segment of the American public.

What happened to "America First"? ;)

We all thought that after Sandy Hook, surely at least background checks would be passed.

Change can indeed happen at the federal level. It is a matter of electing the folks that will voted for reasonable regulations. Bloomberg has been leading the effort.

This may help in some states. But many celebrate everyone carrying guns without permits. Even if the federal governments does its job, those states will treat guns like cars. Little will change as far as the general culture.

Or rather, countries that allowed possession of guns eventually reformed gun ownership laws, and still those countries persisted.
Well, if you want to get technical about it...yeah, we in the states hear all the time about how their governments are all seconds away from declaring martial law and then the tyranny can begin in earnest!

Restricting gun ownership turned out to be a major mistake. We are now seriously under-killing each other compared to the US.

Some of us can find many things to be proud of and then there are those do not appreciate how fortunate they are to live in this country, maybe they should talk to the people who are risking their lives to get into this country.

Yes! We should talk to the people who are trying to get into this country, and immediately return to trying to keep those people out of the country!

After all, a truly great country would only use desperate migrants as a prop to win an argument, other than actually, say, following Christ's dictum to care for the poor.

I'm certain that he meant those seeking legal entry, and those who have successfully immigrated legally.

We do care for the poor, even the poor in other countries. But we can't care for all the world's poor.

It's much worse than that. In 2018 there were,

44 gun murders per million.
73 gun suicides per million.
