You’re equivocating increasing the number of seats to the bench for the purpose of attaining some degeee of ideological tilt, with attaining the ideological tilt within the established number of seats as those seats were vacated by retirement and filled.
No, I'm against increasing the number of SC justices.
The two aren’t the same, and because they aren’t the same, Republicans absolutely can “have it both ways.”
Well, it looks like they can because they did. Yes, the seat was vacated 'naturally' and was eventually filled but wasn't filled in the 'usual' timely manner, or Garland would have been seated on the court.
They said they couldn't allow Garland to be seated because it was an election year and then push through Coney-Barrette right before an election? How about we just agree that they are liars?

Openings occurred naturally in both the Garland and the Coney-Barrett nominations but either Garland wasn't filled naturally or Coney-Barrett wasn't filled naturally. Republicans can't have it both ways.
Why not why are the Republicans obligated to provide a vote that does not benefit them or those they represent and on the other hand they are obligated to do everything within the rules to benefit those that they represent. This is not an either or, in both cases they did what they should have done to best represent those who elected them.

And here we are arguing Left vs Right on a forum in the corner of the internet just like "they" want. Distracted while the agenda moves forward and freedom dies.
I am open to suggestions for a solution. Go ahead and list a plan of action.

Stop arguing with strangers on the internet, for one. It only causes separation as you are more concerned about winning arguments than winning your fellow man. Secondly, focus on the things in your life you can control. Most of us can't do anything about the Supreme Court. But, whatever it is your passionate about getting educated, getting involved, and influencing those around you who will listen is where I would start. Tell them to do the same. Get self-sufficient as best you can so you can survive if and when things fall apart. And, most importantly, pray to the Lord and seek His guidance on this. After all, this is Christian Forums. Jesus Christ is the most important part of our lives, I would hope. God bless.

Reviewing these two suggestion yields what appears to be a conflict.

It does not take much reading of this site to see that there is very little possibility of find anyone on either side who is willing to consider changing.

By those around you, I meant our personal lives not adversaries on CF.

Actually I'm not totally against the idea because as it is now the Supreme Court is a 6-3 conservative majority. Maybe there should be more balance of power. Biden isn't completely on board with the expansion and he created a bipartisan commission last week to study reforms to the Supreme Court.

It was pointed out in an older thread that the GOP appointed three judges to a lifetime seat in the Supreme Court within a four year span with a former president who lost the popular vote twice and he lost reelection. It's hypocritical for the anti-liberal Republicans to complain about court-packing now.

I don't necessarily disagree, but the Democrats control the executive and both houses of the legislature, so for the time being, I think conservatives should be allowed to retain control of the Supreme Court for the balance of power.

Nothing at all wrong with what was done, it was all legal..

Expanding the court is legal too. It's within the powers of Congress.

BTW, I think it's a bad idea, just not an illegal one.

Can we also agree given the chance the democrats would have done the same thing?

And for what it's worth, this power should reside in Congress. The composition of the court is an inherently political process from the number of judges to their nomination and appointment. There is simply no avoiding this reality.

It is a "loophole" that could be abused though where partisan politics runs away with each party responding to the other in a tit-for-tat fashion any time they're able to expand (or shrink) the court. One party may expand the court and the next could either expand it further or shrink it (Adams and the Federalists shrank it to prevent Jefferson from getting an appointment). So I think its a bad idea for those reasons, as I think the court ought to be as independent of politics as is sensible, but it's never fully independent of the political process (nor do any of us really want it to be) so its perfectly within the legal and political process for Congress to change the courts numbers.

In truth it should not matter the ratio of conservative to liberal, what matters is making decisions that are consistent with the Constitution

I like the spirit of what you're saying, but:
As long as I've been alive, the country has been moving slowly and steadily to the left. If anything, this movement has picked up speed. The reason this has happened is because those on the right have not spoken out, or fought the march adequately or efficiently. So I'm not sure shutting our mouths and being shut out of the conversation is going to accomplish anything, except more movement to the left.

I didn't say shut your mouth and to be shut out of the conversation. I said to influence those in your personal lives who are willing to listen and to control those things you can control. The majority of what goes on in this forum is akin to casting pearls before swine. It may have some effect but is little more than a spitting contest. But, of course, continue to do what you feel led to do. I was just offering my opinion on how to best direct our time and energy. Grace and Peace.

Have so many posters forgotten about the 'legislative graveyard' of the Republicans from the last number of years? The Democrats were doing their job of introducing bills over to the Senate only to have them die because the Republican controlled Senate was making their job being only confirming any Federal Judge candidate (qualified or not) to the bench as long as they thought that he/she would do their bidding.

Now that's 'court packing!

No that is filling vacancies, court packing is creating vacancies in an effort to control court decisions, those are two very different things.
