Hello all,
I am just curious...which version of the Bible do you all use? My church which is a Christian Reformed congregation either uses the NRSV or the ESV. I prefer the ESV myself. I feel its way easier to read and understand....

Hello Jesse

The New King James Version, is one that is liked, also the New living translation, hoping one day to have a Thompson Chain New King James Version one day Lord willing.

New living translation is something that is liked because it more paraphrased version of the bible, and it much easier to read to others, it is about a 6th grade reading level.

Regular King James is more of a 12th grade reading level in my opinion,

Would like to one day maybe own a Youngs Literal Translation because it is a word for word by the greek manuscripts type of a wording of the bible itself.

What does NRSV mean, and ESV mean?

Also you have an awesome looking cat in your photo, has he been around for awhile?

Hello pescador,

What is NET mean, and what does NIV mean?

Thank you, both.

I too like the NRSV which is also used in the Catholic Church. I really like the ESV as you said for easy reading and easier to understand the simple language.

A little FYI:
  • The NRSV stands out among the many translations available today as the Bible translation that is the most widely "authorized" by the churches. It received the endorsement of thirty-three Protestant churches. It received the imprimatur of the American and Canadian Conferences of Catholic bishops. And it received the blessing of a leader of the Greek Orthodox Church.
The Common Bible includes all books that belong to the Protestant, Roman Catholic, and Orthodox canons.

Very good Bible. I have an NRSV St James Edition which is huge for all the footnotes and concordance. The best Bible to use offline IMO.

Hello pescador,

What is NET mean, and what does NIV mean?

The NET is the New English Translation, but it's also a play on words. It was the first translation to be published entirely online on the internet, for free. The printed version has more than 60,000 reference notes that accompany the text. It's great for nerds. It is very readable. Have a look at netbible.com

The NIV is the New International Version. It is the best-selling Bible of all time. I still have the original NIV New Testament published in 1978. It is extremely readable, a great balance between word-for-word and meaning-for-meaning. Have a look at thenivbible.com

Hello @JesseBassett, the NASB (New American Standard Bible) is my go-to translation for study, though I regularly use the KJV, NKJV, ESV, NIVUK, NLT and NET as well. What a blessing it is to have so many translations available to us these days, yes :)

I use the NIV-UK when I read through the Bible (because it is a nice balance between a paraphrase and a true translation).

The ESV is very popular these days as it is a nice middle ground between the NASB and the NIV (it's a partial paraphrase, so it's easier to read than the NASB, but more accurate/more of a true translation than the NIV is).

--David
p.s. - there are five different translations in the American Standard Version family, the ASV, the 77', the 95', the 2020, and the LSB (Legacy Standard Bible) which will be completed this Fall (you can get the NT/Psalms/Proverbs for free right now in electronic form here: www.lsbible.org). I principally use the NASB 95, just FYI.

Hello @AubreyM, here's a site where you can see the NKJV, the KJV, the NLT, the ESV, the NET and many others together on a single web page: Mark 1:1 This is the beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

NIV = New International Version
NRSV - New Revised Standard Version
NET = New English Translation

--David

I am unreformed but am nonetheless liking the ESV more and more. I got my first copy from a hospital chaplain about a year ago. It's fresh. It's clear. It does preserve a lot of memorable readings. It seems accurate. It now even comes in a Catholic edition similar to the older RSV Catholic edition. Small changes in a few verses and all the books a Catholic would expect. It has a chance of being a common version for all of us. That was the hope with the RSV but it never quite happened.

For just reading I generally use the NIV. I have a copy of both the NIV and the ESV, and am looking at getting a reformed ESV study Bible to add to my collection.

I use KJV because that's what I've memorized verses from. Also, all the concordances (prior to wide spread Internet Bible resources) were all KJV.

When I study. I use an Interlinear Bible, a concordance, and to some degree lexicons.

I don't read commentaries for "theology sake" but I do read them for "history sake". I find people's understanding from history useful; but like any of us, historical theologians didn't always get it right either.

I enjoy reading this Bible which I bought a couple of years ago because it follows the lectionary used in my church. I also like the clear typeface which is a joy to read!
