Many years ago I studied Wado-Kai karate which roughly translated means soft karate. In my experience there is an enormously greater percentage of young guys who do martial arts then you'd find in the US or Australia. I asked a couple of young office guys I worked with if they did any 'Bruce Lee' kinda stuff. They demured. I pushed it a little. C'mon, show me what you got. And they did. And I'm like whoa...what the..? Don't mess with these guys.
There was nothing soft when sparring with the @Estrid type of opponent, the five foot nothing skinny female who had a point to prove against a male opponent.
Apart from the reluctance of pulling back on punches and kicks they employed a much higher percentage of foot sweeps meaning a greater chance of ending up on your backside.
I actually felt safer when sparring against bigger male opponents.
