So I'm giving the bible a second reading in book order currently and I have reached 2 Samuel. I was shocked to read of some of the things David did such as below and have a question at the end.

2 Samuel 11:2-4
2 One evening David got up from his bed and walked around on the roof of the palace. From the roof he saw a woman bathing. The woman was very beautiful, 3 and David sent someone to find out about her. The man said, “She is Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite.” 4 Then David sent messengers to get her. She came to him, and he slept with her...

(David then plots to have Uriah killed)

14 In the morning David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it with Uriah. 15 In it he wrote, “Put Uriah out in front where the fighting is fiercest. Then withdraw from him so he will be struck down and die.”

2 Samuel 11:16-17
16 So while Joab had the city under siege, he put Uriah at a place where he knew the strongest defenders were. 17 When the men of the city came out and fought against Joab, some of the men in David’s army fell; moreover, Uriah the Hittite died.

(David's song of praise later in the book of 2 Samuel)

2 Samuel 22
22 David sang to the Lord the words of this song when the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. 2 He said:...

21 “The Lord has dealt with me according to my righteousness;
according to the cleanness of my hands he has rewarded me.
22 For I have kept the ways of the Lord;
I am not guilty of turning from my God.
23 All his laws are before me;
I have not turned away from his decrees.
24 I have been blameless before him
and have kept myself from sin.
25 The Lord has rewarded me according to my righteousness,
according to my cleanness[f] in his sight.

So in this situation David was guilty of both adultery and murder. But later in 2 Samuel in his song he sings about being righteous, clean and pure, not turning from God's laws, and being blameless? How can this be the case given what he has done?

Here is what one commentary suggests. I suppose the adultery and murder were already considered dealt with. The three scriptures given concerning David must trump the negative actions. It is a good lesson to us in moving forward and not coming under condemnation for the past.

"The righteousness and cleanness of hands, i.e., the innocence, which David attributed to himself, were not perfect righteousness or holiness before God, but the righteousness of his endeavours and deeds as contrasted with the unrighteousness and wickedness of his adversaries and pursuers, and consisted in the fact that he endeavoured earnestly and sincerely to walk in the ways of God and to keep the divine commandments. ‏רָשַׁע מִן‎, to be wicked from, is a pregnant expression, signifying to depart wickedly from God. ‏לְנֶגְדִּי‎, i.e., as a standard before my eye. In the psalm we find ‏תָמִים עִמֹּו‎, innocent in intercourse with the Lord, instead of ‏תָמִים לֹו‎ (see Deut 18:13); and for the fact itself, David's own testimony in 1 Samuel 26:23-24, the testimony of God concerning him in 1 Kings 14:8, and the testimony of history in 1 Kings 15:5. ‏מֵעֲוֹנִי‎, from mine iniquity, i.e., from the iniquity which I might have committed."

The matter of Uriah is shown as one matter.

1Kings 15:5 Because David did that which was right in the eyes of the LORD,
and turned not aside from
any thing that he commanded him all the days of his life,
save only in the matter of Uriah the Hittite.

He does acknowledge his sin after the fact

2Sam 12:13 And David said unto Nathan, I have sinned against the LORD. And Nathan said unto David, The LORD also hath put away thy sin; thou shalt not die.

I know that we are told to be "diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless" and my sins are far more then David's

I know it says, If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

But even still I get what you are saying, I havent read it or in between and up to that particular song and all it encompasses (or does not) yet I definately need a refresher. If I can find anything further I'll drop back in and post again, hopefully by then maybe someone else can better answer your post better.

This may help to answer some of your questions about David. How could David be considered a man after God’s own heart? | GotQuestions.org

Thanks all. It's a difficult one to reconcile but your replies have helped.

I will undoubtedly find more about David as I progress with my reading.

In those days killing and war was so prevalent and what do we know of God's ways?

And, many stand out people in the bible that God chose did terrible things.

I guess David is just such another person?

God bless...

David had sinned like everyone else in this world

1 Ch 28:3 But God said unto me, Thou shalt not build an house for my name, because thou hast been a man of war, and hast shed blood.

He isnt named as one of the top three persons on their own righteousness list

Ezek 14:20 Though Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in it, as I live, saith the Lord GOD, they shall deliver neither son nor daughter; they shall but deliver their own souls by their righteousness.

Pretty dire, here seems more like an eye for an eye,

Exodus 17:14 And the LORD said unto Moses, Write this for a memorial in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua: for I will utterly put out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.

Which appears to be payback time the same

Duet 25:18 How he met thee by the way, and smote the hindmost of thee, even all that were feeble behind thee, when thou wast faint and weary; and he feared not God.

In that one I love that he took this one up on behalf of the feeble and faint and weary whereas in Mat 5:38 that eye for an eye is changed by Christ.
