I prefer named sources, who have been verified. Not "anonymous sources told us..." That's how they spread any kind of negative gossip about anyone. But being the NYT, their gossip is specifically directed against political opponents of its narrative, and any gossip about its supporters is just ignored. That's the major problem.

I require consistency. Report actual stories - not gossip - about EVERYONE in a category, not just political adversaries while remaining silent about supporters.
Anonymous sources are verified. The journalists know who the sources are and have reason to believe that they are credible, even if the readership never learns the name of the source.

yeah. It's sarcasm. I thought that was clear. That was the point. It's absurd to expect perfection, even when they are very, very good. I don't understand why this seems to confuse you.

Or were YOU being sarcastic?

Thanks trunks, pretty much what I would have written.

I would expect that you could find such a list of controversies about every media outlet or news source, which is why I asked Clint which ones he trusted.

Here's one: The New York Times has been widely panned for the “embarrassing” revelation of the identity of its much-hyped anonymous Trump administration insider behind a bombshell 2018 opinion piece. The newspaper caused a major splash when it published the op-ed, headlined “I Am Part of the Resistance Inside the Trump Administration”, which it characterised as having been written by a “senior official” working to undermine President Donald Trump.

On Wednesday, “Anonymous” outed himself as someone called Miles Taylor, a relatively low-level, unknown staffer from the Department of Homeland Security, who now works as a commentator for CNN.

Hilariously, the Times also ran this, back in 2017:"Don't believe anonymously sourced reports, Justice Official says"

Wait. A moment ago (as reading these posts go), I was reading your high praise of the NYTimes as an outstanding source of information, Pulitzer Prize blah blah blah, and all that. In a flash, that's become "They aren’t perfect? The horror!" apologies.

:mmh:

I was merely noting the fact that the NYT’s reputation appears to be very different to what Clint’s post insinuated.

I cannot say if Rep. Matt Gaetz is guilty or not. However, if he is guilty it would not surprise me at all.

If he is not guilty I am sure his supporters will claim a vast liberal conspiracy to bring him down has failed.

If he is guilty I fully expect many of his supporters to try and justify the illegal actions by citing the Bible as some of Roy Moore's supporters tried to do.

He was relatively unknown, but the chief of staff at a cabinet department is a senior official. I think a lot of people were expecting a Cabinet Secretary or senior member of the White House staff, but that doesn't mean that Taylor isn't high level.

For organisations like the New York Times acting as you described would have serious negative repercussions.

They may well take a hit to what little credibility they have left.

Yes, no worthwhile news stories have ever used anonymous sources.

Before Trump, the generally accepted practice regarding anonymous sources was they were to be used sparingly, to corroborate verifiable evidence, and quoted on the record. That's all out the window now. Stories based entirely on anonymous sources are unverifiable, though, and hence unfalsifiable. For all the public knows or can know, they were fabricated out of whole cloth.

Anonymous sources are verified. The journalists know who the sources are and have reason to believe that they are credible, even if the readership never learns the name of the source.

Unless the journalists don't have reason to believe they are credible, but cite them anyway, or are just making them up...

And no legitimate news story uses them either without conducting due diligence and obtaining other substantiating evidence. They are frequently used however by lazy reporters and news sources attempting to satisfy those readers who are simply looking to confirm their preconceived biased opinions regardless of truth.

Lol, we are discussing a specific article, did the reporters not do “due diligence”, have they “made things up”?

I don’t know if you noticed but Gaetz is on record discussing the investigation, he’s even quoted in the article, it doesn’t appear that you’ve bothered reading it. So what are these sources, or the NYT, supposed to be making up exactly?

Two of the journalists responsible for the article have won Pulitzer Prizes in recent years, your vague insinuations of lazy or dishonest journalism ring particularly hollow.

It does seem odd to me that you should focus on badmouthing the NYT rather than commenting on the alleged sex offender who is the subject of the thread. The extreme partisanship in the US is something to behold.

I read it, it appears to me to be a hit piece, which would be true to form for NYT.

Without evidence, which I am asking for but am 99.9% certain you will not even try to provide, anything you say is simply made up. Nb. your vague assumptions about things you haven't bothered to read are not evidence.

Why not stay on-topic folks about underage sex-trafficking and Matt Gaetz. Stop trying to derail the thread because you dislike the New York Times.

Matt Gaetz showed nude photos of women he said he'd slept with to lawmakers
Gaetz showed nude photos of women he said he'd slept with
Rep. Matt Gaetz, the Florida Republican being investigated by the Justice Department over sex trafficking allegations, made a name for himself when he arrived on Capitol Hill as a conservative firebrand on TV and staunch defender of then-President Donald Trump. Behind the scenes, Gaetz gained a reputation in Congress over his relationships with women and bragging about his sexual escapades to his colleagues.

Hint: Chief of staff is not a "relatively low-level" position in a Department as large as DHS. It is in fact, a leadership position.

Receipts....it seems he has a different concept of a girlfriend than most of us: “I have a suspicion that someone is trying to recategorize my generosity to ex-girlfriends as something more untoward,”

Investigators believe that Mr. Greenberg connected with women online through websites meant to facilitate dates in exchange for gifts, fine dining, travel and cash allowances. Mr. Greenberg would then introduce the women to Mr. Gaetz, who also had sex with them in Florida hotels, sometimes while taking ecstasy, an illegal mood-altering drug, according to people familiar with the encounters.

The Times also reviewed receipts from Apple Pay and another mobile payments app that show Mr. Gaetz and Mr. Greenberg transferring funds to one such woman, and Mr. Greenberg to another. The women told friends that the money was in exchange for sex.

Gaetz addressed the NYT's allegations against him. As for a DOJ investigation into him, if one is even happening, which I have reason to doubt, he would know as much about it as you or I. What is they NYT making up? For all we know, the sources themselves.

Two of the journalists responsible for the article have won Pulitzer Prizes in recent years, your vague insinuations of lazy or dishonest journalism ring particularly hollow.

They're not insinuations, and they're certainly not vague. Dogs bark, cows moo and the NYT lies. It's their native language.

It does seem odd to me that you should focus on badmouthing the NYT rather than commenting on the alleged sex offender who is the subject of the thread. The extreme partisanship in the US is something to behold.

Why odd? The subject of this thread is a report put by the NYT. It's not about Gaetz at all. The report could have just as easily been about anybody, because as I already pointed out, anybody can claim to have anonymous sources saying anything. Until Gaetz is actually charged with anything, to even comment on the allegations against him would, as far as I'm concerned, be to give them credence they don't deserve. As for your charges of partisanship, since when is the NYT a political party?

MDMA? That gets into the hair, right?
Testing positive for this substance might lend credence to Mr Greenberg’s testimony?
